Foil stamping is an advanced printing technique that involves adding metallic foil accents to your artwork. Setting up your design file correctly is essential for producing high quality results. Here are the 5 steps to follow to ensure that your design is ready for foil stamping:
1. Use industry standard applications for design, to create Vector Based Artwork.
2. Foil Elements should be a separate layer, identified as a spot color labeled “FOIL”.
3. Include a composite PDF.
4. Foil always overprints ink.
5. Supply us with a high-resolution PDF with crop marks and 1/8" bleed.
Do's and Don'ts of Foil Stamping:
DON'TS
-Don’t use programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Publisher.
-Don't use JPEG, GIF, BMP, or Raster Images.
-Don't simulate the reflective effect of the foil in your file.
DO'S
-Do use Vector based artwork
-Do use artwork that is at least 300 dpi.
-Do include a separate layer or PDF to indicate foil area.
-Do include a composite PDF.
-Do convert all types and fonts to outlines.

A lot of tutorials says that we have to create separate pdf files for a spot, foil, emboss effects. You've said that we need to create a separate layer in our pdf? Which one is correct? Maybe it depends on the print shop?

If there is text on the foil layer, do you need to make a separate layer for the text or can you keep it on the foil layer?

If you leave simple text in same layers as foil, they will cut shape with your text, and simple text will come out as foiled. So it's better to keep everything tidy and separate.

The foil layer should be foil only! No other elements of print should appear on the foil layer.
