I'm a brand new never-seen-a-Cricut-machine-before-in-my-life person. I bought double-sided faux leather to make earrings which is waaay thicker than the paper thin setting on the Cricut Maker. The blade that comes with the Maker won't cut through it. Can you tell me if there is an automatic setting I could use instead? Or is there some way to do it manually? Love your videos. Thanks for putting all this information out there for the rest of us!

@@linguisticlingo Hi, thanks for your comment! Welcome to the wonderful world of Cricut! Really thick double sided faux leather will have to be cut with the knife blade using the Maker. You could also try the deep point blade if you have an Explore Air 2. The deep point blade comes in a black housing and is an extra purchase - it works with both the Explore Air 2 and the Maker. The knife blade is also an extra purchase, but it only works with the Maker. You can see both blades on my Favorite Products page on my blog here: amyromeu.com/my-favorite-products/

Is there a way to run the foil again if we want it a little darker or no?
@AmyRomeu3 жыл бұрын
@@jrbboop Hi, unfortunately, no. The foil is "transferred" to the material after it runs through the Cricut on the first pass. The foil is no longer on the foil sheet. You would need to apply a new sheet of foil to apply a second layer, but it would be difficult to get the second foiling to line up again with the original design. Have you tried using a bolder tip? That may help.

Hi, Pam! Thank you so much for your kind comment! I'm glad you are finding value in my videos - that's my goal. :) To answer your question, yes, you can use any pattern or design to foil onto leather. However the foiling tool doesn't fill in areas, it draws in a series of lines. So a floral line drawing or a sunburst of lines like the designs I show in this video are perfect, but something like a circle shape would only foil as a circle outline, not a filled in circle shape. I hope that makes sense! :)

Hi Amy. I read somewhere that the foil faded after Ironing-on backing. I wonder if after foiling you could press the design with waxed paper to seal the design so it won't disappear after ironing on a backing. I would love your thoughts on this.

@AmyRomeu2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Jan! Thanks for your question. You may be able to, but the optimal results of foiling come from uniform and direct pressure from the foil tip onto the material. Since cork isn't a smooth or uniform surface, the foil won't press evenly onto the cork. It could still make for a cool look, though! Let me know if you try it. I'd love to hear about your results.

Hi Amy, thank you so much for this video. I have tried it on faux leather, however it rubs off, do I need to seal it somehow?

Hi, thanks for your comment! I've heard of the foil rubbing off occasionally, especially if the faux leather has a glossy coating on it, or is textured. You could try sealing the foil with a polyacrylic sealer (a spray, not one you brush on). Another idea is from my friend Natalie at NeliDesign. She uses a waterproof spray for shoes to protect the foil on faux leather. She has a KZbin video and a written tutorial here: nelidesign.com/faux-leather-and-foil-how-to-make-luggage-tags/ Let me know if you try either of these techniques, and what works for you!

Hi, Lola! Thanks for your comment. I have not seen any significant rub off, but I think it depends on how much you handle the foiled item because oils from your skin will transfer onto the foiled surface repeatedly over time. Cricut says faux leather takes the foiling transfer better than genuine leather because of the natural oils in genuine leather, so I would think a lot of handling will have an impact over time. If you wanted to try sealing the foil, I would suggest using a light spray of a matte polyurethane spray (not a brushed on sealer).

Where do you get your faux leather

Hi, Shirley! Thanks for your comment. In my video description you’ll find links to the faux leather I used. I hope that helps!

Hi Amy. I'm using faux smooth leather and the foil is not transfering at ALL. I've used more pressure and still nothing ... any suggestions?
@AmyRomeu2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Kristy! Hmmmm. I haven't had that problem before. Is there a coating or other sort of glossy surface on the faux leather? Is the faux leather thinner than normal?

Hi, Denice! Is your faux leather very smooth? Does it have a glossy or very shiny surface on it?

@@AmyRomeu it's the pebble faux leather.

@@denicevines5008 Ok. I did mine with smooth faux leather. I don’t think the pebbled works as well. Do you have any smooth you can try?

@@AmyRomeu yes.. I did on suede. I tried it again on the pebble but used fine tip and it actually worked!

@@denicevines5008 Great! I haven’t tried suede yet - I thought it would be too textured to work. I’ll have to try it.

Hi, Deloris! Are you able to enter the library? The foiled earrings design is #151 in my library. Click on the blue title line under the #151 and the zipped folder containing the SVG will instantly download to your device.

Hi, Meagan! Yes, it's amazing how small of a hole I can cut with my Cricut. But I also like to show people who get frustrated when the holes don't cut all the way through that there are other ways. Thanks so much for your comment!

Bought this but it’s useless to me because I can’t get it to work on *actual* leather. Not cricut leather or fake leather but real samples I have. Kinda frustrating.
@AmyRomeu3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comment! I'm sorry you are frustrated. Unfortunately, Cricut recommends foiling only for faux leather, not for genuine leather. They said when the launched the foiling tip that the foil doesn't work well with the natural oils in genuine leather. :( I share that in the video, and also share my personal experience that smooth faux leather works much better than textured or pebbled faux leather. I would love it it they came up with a foiling solution for genuine leather!
@madnessintomagic3 жыл бұрын
@@AmyRomeu Yep, it’s frustrating. I don’t want to use or purchase pre-packaged supplies. I re-use and re-purpose. It’s not surprising they’d set it up to only work with their product though. I even tried putting actual metal leaf under the foil and using the pressure to emboss that into my leather, but it didn’t work. Then I smeared some foil glue on the leather, did the same, and made a mess. hahahah. Good thing is that it all washed off. lol. I’m going to just keep experimenting until I get it to work on the leather I want to use. Hope I don’t break the cricut.
