Nice Comment !!💯☺🙏🏿👍🏿 May God give all of us relating to this one way or another, the strength to carry on and NEVER STOP BELIEVING THAT WHEN HE SAYS HE WILL NEVER LEAVE NOR FORSAKE US, THAT IS WHO HE IS- THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH. Isaiah 40:31 Those of us who put our hope, our trust in the Lord. We have our strength RENEWED, because we ride, soar on high on HIS Wings as Eagles. We run never get tired, walk dont faint, go through challenges and never get depressed because Jesus Christ has already, some 2000years ago, nailed our burdens anxieties infirmities diseases worries troubles to the cross🙏🏿 We just have to keep believing and always be in a thankful mode. We came naked, and shall leave naked the way our Grandparents and their parents left naked. Even our body will be eating by rodents arts and worms. The battle field is in the mind. Lets drop this attitude of justification by works, as if God owes us anything but to worship him be happy with ourselves family and society at large. Even all these couples marry marry things, I hear over there, there is nothing like that. So why not just make do with what life destiny places on your hand, rather that be unhappy for the rest of ones life, for something anything King Solomon calls it ALL EVERY EVERY = VAIN I am thinking that, humans will never stop worrying, especially we Africans. We have a special kind of worrying. We even worry over other people's WORRY🚶🏾‍♂️🚶🏾‍♂️🚶🏾‍♂️🚶🏾‍♂️🚶🏾‍♂️🚶🏾‍♂️🚶🏾‍♂️

Hey Summer I just want to say from mental health perspective as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in America. The story of "no child/husband" too is not wrong. Having children, married, having pets are protective factors that will screen for in mental health. Most of the time people with depression and suicidal thought will not go ahead to end their life because of those protective factors in their lives. The other side of the same coin is that not married, no child, no pet, social isolation are high risk factors that make people with severe depression to go ahead and killed themselves by suicide. I read comments here of her friends, colleagues, Church members aware of her mental health symptoms and did nothing about it. All those behaviors they saw deleting contacts, strange attitudes, ending relationships are her crying out to people for help. Someone should have reached out to her "hey, what's going on" and probably safe her life. My recommendation is that people should be one another's keeper and anybody could have mental illness, as causes are multifactoral, rich, poor, young, old, etc I wrote 2 articles in Guardian and Vanguard Newspapers in 2015 about Suicide and mental health. I think I will create time and create more awareness about mental health in our society. Thanks

That story is wrong because that is not her story. She wasn’t depressed because she had no husband and children… in her own case she had no husband and children because she was depressed. It will be wrong NOT to tell a person’s true story. Here’s how it was written on Punchnews. 👇 The source said, “She had been suffering from depression for years and her death has nothing to do with loneliness or lack of a husband or sex. Within the last seven years, I know she was in a relationship twice. “She ended those relationships on her own because of depression. She said she did not want to bring someone else into her life when she could not take care of herself. She was going through extreme depression, but people that did not know what she was going through have been posting rubbish online. @@summeraku I hear you, Punch reported as journalists - a story, but I am interested in mental health and helping others catch the symptoms that could claim people's lives. I am a mental health Clinician and I save lives. People have children by adoption, people have pets, dogs, cats, horses, name it, that brings them joy and occupy their life and give them value for living. Let's save lives, let's create the awareness that social isolation is high risk and could predispose people to depression and taking their own lives as in this case. GOD said it is not good for man to be alone., not only in marriage, people could be in marriage and be lonely. But we need social interaction for healthy mental health. We're not amplifying the story of journalism to be the criteria for mental health crisis. We want to save lives by getting the criteria and facts right. The lady lacked protective factors that could have prevented her death. I dive into this story because I am saving lives here and I want to save many lives of my Nigerian sisters and brothers. I did that for many years in Federal psychiatric institutions in Nigeria before I came to the US. I am still doing it anytime I visit home, I volunteer across African countries free to save life. Life is good and no one should be denied of life saving information not just journalism or family story that did not care about the deceased when they had the golden opportunity to support her and seek treatment and recovery. EVERYBODY working with her and even her church members knew she has severe depression issues. At times she will block everybody or delete all her contacts and other weird stuff BUT we never saw this coming. The mistake her family did was to allow her live alone, if she has attempted harming herself in the past, she should have a live in companion that will ensure she takes her drugs. NOW MORE that ever, I will never believe any gist on social media until reputable people accredit it, see how they rubbished this lady that was mentally sick. Which dirty husband, isn't it the same husband that are killing women and driving their wives crazy?

I also don't think she committed suicide due to husband issues solely what about a male comedian who committed suicide. A good husband makes a difference oh, when my dad and mum met, my mum didn't want to go to school again because she was in love. Anyway, her parents didn't allow it. She became a matron in control of 2 hospitals. God knows more than we all. Lord help us, some medications actually cause suicide thoughts.

Just so you know that your intro and body of your narrative has a nice flow and I was enjoying it till your closing and you decided to go personal, carry your own experiences and views from your own relationships with the opposite sex, and box all together with what is actually a woman's world. A few years ago, a Female from the North stabbed her husband to death, because she suspected he was in an affair. How many women came out to condemn this?? Even this Osinachi case, I bet you there are more men who condemned it. The alcoholic beaverages company net billions because Nigeria men no de fit shout. Check out the statistics, its more MARRIED MEN than Bachelors or young Adult men who consume alcoholic beaverages, because we no like wahalla. When we come back sober, even if Madam says Idiot, we say thank you and jejeli just find the corner of our bed. Our Niaja women get special anointing for skin pircing, body itching insults. Unless you wish to lie to yourselves. You guys are specially gifted in the area of tongue lashing, and yes sometimes your Husbands are not spared.. Husbands Fathers are verbally and physically molested slapped beating up talked down on, in the presence of their children every day and you know what? These men can't come out to say this, because of the stigma , they will become laughing stock to both family friends and the society at large. How does one go about saying, "Olboy my wife slap me today" even to friend. Or is it your parents or Inlaws you will tell this to? Men suffer tooooooooo in marraiges but can't say it, because of our society and how they will be perceived as WEAK MEN. So, next stop is the bars, its alcoholic beaverages and the breweries keeps netting billions quarterly, because Man no fit shout or Man no de CRY. ****Your closing statement about Men is too TOXIC. Using words like DIRTY and STINKY to describe men. Atleast if not for anything, give some respect to your FATHER. Or are you a product from one of the laboratory experiments? If you are still Single, I will advice that you watch what comes out of your mouth Girl (Life and death is in our tongue) , such that you don't go home with a stinky dirty Male. Such that you don't attract negative and dark energy. ***There are GOOD and BAD people everywhere and the marraige institution is not an EXCEPTION.

Summer Aku, you are absolutely right. Today, i was at the market and the woman I wanted to buy something from said... "A woman's life has no value if she doesn't have children". I had to educate her by letting her see how wrong that statement is. But, she said it because that is what the religious, and cultural, upbringing she had told her. And they started, telling me the religious books also said it. But, after talking to them they saw things differently. If what the family of the woman said, is the cause of her death is true. It's because, she didn't have someone to tell her she is more than enough by herself. It's time, people start understanding that they are enough! You have a job to feed yourself, and have a roof over your head. Be, contented with that and any other thing you desire will come eventually if that's what you want.

In black Africa particularly those with least developed systems that support and encourage healthy living, cultural influence is a strong feature in the day to day life of people. This include character and characteristics, manners and mannerisms, custom and costumes. It's an inescapable way of life of a people. It is in this that husband, wife and children play a very important role as a replacement for the institution of social welfare, health care insurance, financial support system, post retirement care delivery services, etc, that is totally lacking in our society. Therefore, it is a matter for great concerns placed by tradition when a man or woman is not married, and or does not have children. The worry is - what becomes of a guaranteed happy life when civilization pressure has made people so individualistic, with little or no quality time for those not your own blood? What of life in old age? It is within the context of above cultural understanding that the woman you met at the market as a petty trader with no assurance of a guaranteed life at old age placed zero value to a woman with no children, and she was right. However, am more worried by your comment which did not put forward how wrong she was, nor the kind of education you gave her with better options for a secured support in her pre and post retirement life which according to her, by tradition, is the value of children.

@@tivlumunaminde7911 The market woman was wrong. Single women have lived a life of purpose and added value to their communities. A popular example is Mother Theresa of Calcutta. @@obiobi9378 sometimes it's difficult separating perceptions from reality. In this case, am concerned about reality of an african woman within which value for children, is located, and not a debate about the value of women with children and single women as your op-ed implies. The honest truth is that in Nigerian society and environment marriage and having children seems to be the most important accomplishment. Even as a successful woman some people will like you to know that still not married. Mental health and mental wellbeing is very important a lot of people think they can just pray it away without looking at the underlying root cause and solution.

This woman's story is so sad. Seeing that this could happen to anybody. Many Nigerians think they are normal but they aren't . Many of our daily interactions and how some people brutalize their children or other people's children with the cover of training. Anyway may her soul rest in perfect peace. Thank you so much Summer for ur explanation, I totally agree with you. Lots of people are really going through situations that they can’t even explain to anyone., especially people with high reputations and most of the time they bottle up a lot inside that can lead to deterioration of their mental health which can lead to serious depression and complications in the health or even suicide. Please I alway advise especially women to look for one person to confide in, that you can talk to with when you are feeling down and overwhelmed with issues because saying stuff that bothers them inside as this can go a long way to help and bring so healing. Women are made up of a lot of emotions, I also know that most people can not be trusted to to keep secrets but ask to God to direct you and trust me there are still good people out there and you could also see professional councillors if you can afford the cost because everything you tell them is confidential and professional. May God comfort her family in Jesus name. God bless you greatly Summer, please keep the good work.

There is this kid on social media who’s talked about crimes, he’s from Nigeria 🇳🇬. He met her family who said she suffered from mental illness. When her father was alive he will move in with her and make sure she takes treatment. Her father passed and her sister and brother either of them will move in and do the same. Both of her siblings are married now and no one could help her when she’s in such state. Even her neighbors attested to it even the gateman. Whenever her illness starts she will walk around up and down that’s how they’ll call her family. Sad 😢 no one could assist her. Now she’s dead they’ll come to collect her money and properties. This is a lesson Let’s learn to find assistant or personal nurse 👩‍⚕️ May her soul rip

=Thank you Summer Aka for such a wonderful elaboration on the subject of MENTAL HEALTH! When I stubborn across such video, I have no choice than to share my opinion. I love the fact that you said mental health or mental sickness can be managed. Meaning if, someone who is suffering from mental-related-problem finds his or herself in the right environment, hang around with the righr friends...symtom like chronic depression, suicidal taught which are often associated with metal illness will eventually disappear.i did share with you audience, the case of my mum so, the first is to separate the person from a ridicule enviroment(those who like to spy & laugh at you) second, is to seek the help of a therapist.lastly, but the most essential aspect is that people are going through this, needs lot of fun, care(show him or her love) & be patient with them.i remembered singing & dancing our local music for my mum right at the hospital during one of my visitation.the senior nurse walked-in & she was very please ! Such move triggers INSTANT RECOVERY! Unfortunately, we Do not know how to manage anything in the zoo country! My advice to young ladies & young men is to learn how to manage depression before going into marriage. Believe, it's tougher & harder to manage once you are in. Marriage is not all about S3X🙂!men should get that into their skull. Thanks - Chucks from Rome

As a man thinks in his heart so is he. I which you to prosper in all things even as your soul prosper. *Insanity and oppression begin with a thought which develops into an abnormal state of mind. When an individual becomes oppressed and then depressed in the mental realm, it often opens the door for demonic activity. Demons desire to take over the minds and the bodies of human beings. If Satan can begin by oppressing you with negative thoughts, then he can move further against you* When I believe 21 years ago something terrible happened to me. A thought came into my mind that I will go to hell (I used to be a lonely and not joyful person before I believe). I didn't know the impact of the decision to follow Christ so when that thought came as a timid person I was just in my corner battling that thought. One day during a prayer siège I was literally harassed in my mind as If someone was just beating hardly at a door wanting to enter. It was horrible. But I was afraid to talk to someone. One day the wife of the couple of the house church I used to go ( they knew I was depressed and they were praying for me) told me : your attitude is because of what is in your mind. Then I got the idea in my mind to memorize bible verses. When I did that it help me in my meditation and my focus was on God and that thought just disappeared I don't know when. *To renew your mind is the greatest challenge and it last a whole lifetime*

Hi Nneka. I don't think the Yoruba culture is so liberal that having children out of wedlock is no big deal at all to the point "some of them have children all over the place". No. But it is true that the Yoruba culture will not severely castigate or shun a woman from society because she has a child out of wedlock. It's not a great situation, but if it happens, mother and child will not lack the support of family and friends, not even one bit. Also, let's not ascribe Lagos' lifestyles to all of Yorubaland. In the smaller towns and villages, if a girl has a child out of wedlock once, she would not become a pariah. Second or third time, she will be known as a fast girl. Reputations matter.

Summer thanks for the superb education on the need for more attention to mental health issues. I am wondering why the possibility that someone arranged her death is being ignored. She is rich and living alone. Why do people not see the possibility that this could have been a homicide? A fingerprint examination of the bottles that were found may have revealed something else. This does not mean that she was not mentally ill, it only says: if she was so sick and unable to cope with living, how come she had a good job and was able have a career minding a company's accounts? And, why don't we see her official side in all these stories? Surely, if her condition was so bad, then she would have had episodes in the office, right? Why is the official side so neatly deleted in all these stories? Could she have had episodes of this in the office and then, some threatened to fire her for her health condition? Why are we completely ignoring these pertinent questions? I ask because it is the first anniversary of her death. Why did her family refuse to have her postmortem? Did they abandon her in the hour of her need and therefore feeling left alone in her struggles, decided to end it up? Too many questions seeking answers

psychiatric issues are real. Most people in the society is affected one way or the other. regardless of wealth. it can be trigger by many factors. it is advisable to have NGO or other organisations to educate our people in Africa. generally. I've seen a case of a person been dumped by a partner then ends up in a mental institution. Not every mad people we see on the street in Africa is mad. Western countries do have ways of managing it hence we need to do the same in Africa in general. God bless us all

It looks like punch reported the situation upside down, it sounds like the lady is lonely, loneliness is one of the big factors that can put people at risk for suicidal ideation, depression etc, and who knows why she chose to walk away from a relationship?

It's not loneliness ma. She was born that way and has always been on medication. I use to work with this girl and what Summer said is true. Ask anyone that worked in Airtel or works in GLO that knows her.. EVERYBODY knew her depression matter was very strong but we never knew she will go this far. Ask her church member down to Pastor, they knew too. She used to attend some RCCG parish in Lekki and even started going to Elevation church .. go ask her Pastors they knew.
