Admired what you're doing. Been city-commuting by Japan-surplus folding bikes 16 & 20 here in the Philippines for 7 years. You inspire to go way beyond my comfort zone, touring seems enticing. Thanks man, great content!

Love the videos👍think you should keep them going it looks like a whole new way of touring that’s just now getting a foothold. I toured on a pannier set up for years but became disabled on the job. This multi modal way of touring gives me hope to enjoy riding freedom again. Thx

I have an Asian knockoff 16in wheel folding bike. It is a single speed folding bike and it is very strong and solid. It folds up very small for storage and transport. This bike has been basically maintenance free. The wheels on this bike are the original wheels and they haven't even dry rotted yet. I've have owned this bike for about 8 years now.

Thanks for the video Andy. Mine's a 20" (451 22") wheel. It's Tern name is light-speed (TernVergeX11 2021). It is made to go fast and climb hills. The cargo rack I put on it means it can carry heavy loads and I have a telescopic suspension seatpost which supports taller riders. I plan to do some touring when we can travel.

I enjoyed your pros & cons and I respect You've gone a long way in your travels, even if I dont agree with your cons. If you want a longer seatpost, get an oversize MTB one and put it over your existing one and put a small bolt to hold it from turning. also you could put MTB crank set on and that would give you faster and lower gears, even if you dont put a front derailleur on , but it saves the chain falling off.. A sprung saddle brings joy to the small wheel syndrome and bar ends take a bit of twitch out.. Lastly if one wants to carry lots of junk .. a small single wheel trailer .. You can tell I am with you on folders for touring, as I spent many trips on full size bikes and hit the pit falls you address.. sounds like you have the same set up as me when rolling along, and if you need any cheap ideas to improve just mail me. Hey you just got a new subscriber...and best intentions for your travels..

Great video. No nonsense. Could do with a little snippet of your theme tune or something like that, but having no music is a million times better than that horrible corporate stuff other channels use, and some lovely New Zealand beach sounds are enough for this short film.

My reason was that it was easy to be picked up by car to and from work. Now, after a stroke I can rebuild my confidence riding down paths once I have rebuilt the folding bike. There may be times when I am stranded so once again I can be picked up, but only if necessary.

Keep your bike as it is, or at least. If you consider upgrade, first rear sprocket to Shimano mega range (i think 7-speed), and replace rear derailleur (Tourney series) and a compatible shifter.

I love my folding bike, because I can carry it easily into the basement (where I store it) and I don't get stuck in the staircase like I do with a full size bike... the stair case at my place is very narrow

You can solve most of your cons with a highend folding bikes, such as the tern verge x20 or the tyrell fsx. Don't get the brompton for touring. That bike is overrated in my opinion. 16 inches wheel is just suck. I have been touring in vietnam in a tern verge x20, best bike ever and worth every penny. Tip for people who tour in Vietnam, you can get all your bike parts using shopee or lazada, its like amazon. :)

Hi. I just bought the Tern Verge X11 2021 for touring. I changed the tyres, seat and seatpost. I added a Tern cargo rack and new pedals. A bit pricey but I'm really happy with it. I want to do rides in Europe using bus and train.

That chainring is too small. For this bike, you would need a chainring with at least 48 teeth. My Dahon Qix D8 has a 52-tooth chainring. I find in the higher gears, it is capable of speeds comparable to many full-sized traditional bikes.
@hobocyclist
@hobocyclist 2 жыл бұрын
Yes 100 percent agree, in fact ive got a video here showing how to replace the crank for larger chain ring to increase speed, easy and cheap modification! kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3-aYmdmirJnebM

Sorry but the cons in this video are entirely related to the utter shitness of the bike. I tour on a folding bike. It has front and rear derailleurs, 22-inch wheels, a long seatpost and stem extender for a normal comfortable riding position (I'm 189 cm tall), a Tern rear rack which can carry full panniers and a lot of gear without getting in the way of your feet and a super smooth 20 speed drive chain with all the gears you need for touring. Time to upgrade lad.

Exactly. This is an old Japanese surplus folding bike. Which is nice and would last a long time if maintained since it's made of steel. But for its price, you can add just a little more and buy a cheap modern folding bike with alloy and modern shimano parts. Like the Trinx Da2007d which is now updated as their Dolphin model. Tern and Dahon are very nice but also way above the price point of this bike. So Trinx, Atomic, and other good but low priced folding bikes with almost the same priced and could be even cheaper when bought used is so much more worth it than restoring and upgrading an old Japanese surplus bike. Trinx for example is a cheap chinese bike brand but are great value for money. In the Philippines, it's well-regarded and ridden. So yes, the cons are mostly not because of folding bikes in general but because the specific bike on this video is just very old and bought without researching at least what's the best bike this price range could get someone. The time, money, and headache you'll get trying to make this old and almost bad surplus bike into a good touring bike can be saved with just a little more effort. Either buy a cheap but good modern folding bike or at least choose a good surplus folding bike. There's a lot of good ones out there, even Dahon patented surplus bikes that could be bought in the same price range. However, the reason why this bike sucks is because it's one of the generic surplus bike that is bought online. Do yourself a favor, Hobocyclist. Sell this bike, find a good surplus bike dealer and find a good one. What astonishes me is that, he toured Japan, but didn't even realize thousands of good cheap bikes that can be bought there. I mean seriously, so many surplus bikes even dahon patented ones are being sold cheaply in the Philippines, and guess what where all these cheap but good bikes came from, Japan. So everyone please. Do yourself a favor and research beforehand before buying a folding bike off e-bay, etc. just because it's cheap. I'm not suggesting you to buy an expensive bike, I'm only saying you could get so much better bike and value if you've at least done some research. Otherwise you'll get headache and all these cons without even realizing you could've gotten a bike in the same price without most if not all the headache and cons. Brand new Trinx 7/8 speed shimano parts full alloy folding bike 20" wheels is just over 100USD, could be bought way cheaper as low as 60USD or even lower. Trinx fa209 like I had before was full on Shimano Sora parts, 2x9 speed that was less than 200usd brand new. Could be bought even way cheaper used. Dahon patented and even just very good japanese surplus folding bikes could be bought around any price. 60USD to 100USD and more and even cheaper than 60USD, even mini velos like Bianchi, Bruno, and full sized vintage bikes. etc. There are a lot of cheap but good surplus folding bikes too. And I'm not talking about surplus bikes that almost looks like trash with all problems and rust, etc. I mean actually good surplus bike that would just need a bit of cleaning and maintenance and it's gonna be a great bike. Good bikes including its parts.
