In this episode, we explore the wonderful world of pitched-down cassette tapes with the Sidecar Cassette Mod from FoldyMakes. We dive into some sound sculpting possibilities with the use of delay pedals like the Boss Digital Delay, Hologram Microcosm, Death By Audio Echo Dream 2, and the Chase Bliss Habit. And also used some in-series compression and EQ to craft the incoming signal and shape it for optimal frequencies.
What is the Sidecar Mod?
"The Sidecar is a variable motor speed mod for standard cassette recorders. The knob adjusts the motor speed, allowing you to slow down and lower the pitch of audio being played back by the cassette. The switch toggles the mod on & off, allowing the audio to be played back at normal speed if desired without needing to tune the knob perfectly." -FoldyMakes
And in the end, we will talk through the reasons why one might want to drop $200 on what is basically a modified cassette tape player. Is it actually worth the price?

Thanks for the video, it's really good to see. You asked the question "is it worth it?" then answered the question "should we support people who make things". I agree we should support community and it makes me really happy when people get involved but I definitely don't think a simple cassette mod is worth $200. Just like I have a nice cassette collection myself and am happy to pay $7-$10 for one but not $20.

I understand. It's part of the reason for the video. I totally get that not everyone wants to spend that much or can't spend that much. I guess my point was that it's about more than just the money or the simplicity of it. I appreciate people trying to make a living off of something even when our world has become accustomed to getting equipment at incredibly cheap prices. With that said, just because something is cheap doesn't mean that someone isn't paying a price for it. We see it in electronics. We see it in fashion. We see it in food. Someone always pays the price even if we dont at the cash register. So at the end of the day I'm really excited to support people directly who are making things and selling them and supporting a family off of that and I don't have to give my money to some huge corporation. Just my take on it and I know not everyone feels the same. Thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback. Cheers!

check out MothHunterMods - his have two pitch control and two noise mods plus CV for cheaper than this. I'm all about supporting the community but this price seems unusually steep for the features offered.

I'll check it out. I think it's not a binary thing. All of them can offer similar stuff at different prices. I think the cost is relative to the situation. I don't disagree that it's a high price point, and I also think it's important to pay someone for their time and energy. I want people to be able to support themselves, so for me, that's where the value for cost comes in. Not just "can I get it for cheaper". At the end of the day, I totally understand why some folks aren't into it for the cost. 200 is a lot of money. Cheers!

Any product is worth what a costumer is willing to pay for it. For me I think it would be more enriching to find one of the many tutorials for tape mods and make it yourself (which is the route I'm probably going to take)

Of course. I'm just advocating for a more "buy from the little guy" and "support independent makers" approach. But if you can make your own then absolutely do that. Cheers!
