I know! The second hand market for these books has gone insane. I do think they will be reprinted one day though...

Thanks for presenting these. I have a few I bought off eBay and was unaware what books were in the complete set since there is no listing of the series

Oh, I have been really looking forward to this video! What a beautiful series. :) I've just recently started on collecting these books, my first was the russian myths one - very beautiful indeed, then the Aeneid (it has so many old illustrations, 72 in total, it's a delight) and I am still waiting on the Indian myths. From your video I will also definitely be on the lookout for the King Arthur edition and the Legends of Ancient Rome ( I never managed to get a look inside that one so far, thank you!). I have to say I am too very sorely disappointed to see how Folio chose to publish The Legends of the Ring, as that was a volume I was considering, but now will probably not look for any time soon. Anyways, I very much appreciated this video, your collection is always inspiring!

Laura's Illustrated Treasures thank you! It is a really stunning series. And Russian Myths is one of the best - Niroot’s illustrations are always so beautiful! (And I have no idea why they failed so dismally on ordering the illustrations for the Legends of the Ring, such a disappointing design choice.) Interestingly, I posted a photo of this set on instagram with a link to the Icelandic Sagas one that is still in the FS shop, and FS replied on it that there “might still be a few to come”, so they might be reprinting? (Or maybe more in the series??? That would be amazing! But I imagine more likely reprinting...) If you’re collecting the series it might be worth giving them a call to find out what their plans are 😀 (Just so long as they are reproducing the images in colour - boo to the b&w ones, they look so drab and muddy next to the originals!)
@laurasillustratedtreasures77896 жыл бұрын
Oh, I'd be so happy if there were truly going to be reprints, to say nothing of how amazing it would be if they added more, there can never be too many fine editions of legends and myths! :D And yes, definitely, the b&w ones don't hold a candle to the originals, likewise the spine design and everything is just so much nicer in the single volumes rather than the 3 parters, but naturally they seem to be harder to track down second hand, haha.

Thank you for this video. I only had one volume when i first saw it now i have 14 volumes with only 2 more to purchase! As this video is 6 years old has Folio added any more to this series that you are aware of?
@BeautifulBooks4 ай бұрын
@@kaxwu No, they’ve moved away from this series. There were a couple of other volumes with similar bindings though, like The Peloponnesian War (the original edition, not the recent limited one). Sounds like you’ve got a lovely collection ❤️

I have the smaller 3 volume set of British Myths and Legends. Had no idea it was originally published as part of this series. Is there any difference in the illustations?
@BeautifulBooks4 ай бұрын
The single volume edition has duo tone illustrations, while the 3-volume set has the same ones in b&w. (The smaller volumes are much easier to read than the original large ones though!)

Hello :) 'Tis I, again :) I accidentally bought the smaller two volumes version of Greek Myths, before I finally found the one I was actually after, the large single volume quarter bound in leather. Would you say the more economical production value is all the difference between the smaller two volume edition and the larger single volume edition? Someone said somewhere that the smaller two volumes do not include Graves' annotation, but I could see that those are included in the smaller two vol edition.... Thanks for your time in advance! You have such an amazing collection and your videos are always jammed packed with info! Thanks again!
@BeautifulBooks5 жыл бұрын
Hi! Apart from production values, the main difference is in the illustrations. The illustrations in the one-volume edition are duotone (red and black) while the two-volume edition has only monochrome (black) illustrations. If you check out timestamp 1:34 in the video above, you can see a quick comparison between the two - the colour versions are much more striking. (I have both because I did the same thing - first got the two volume edition, then discovered the difference after I began collecting the rest in the series and had to go find the single volume second hand!)
@NobodyHere5 жыл бұрын
Beautiful Books Ah I am relieved! Because this means I can let the smaller one go, but having said that the smaller one is handier to read! I might do a quick comparison video of my own and I will direct people here to this video if I do :)

For reference, do you still know how much they were retailing for on average when you acquired them?
@BeautifulBooks8 ай бұрын
Mid price was around $50 direct from Folio, but it was still a membership club back then, and you typically got free books when you joined - it is kind of complicated to work out exactly what you paid because you have to take that into account too. And they were printed over many years so later volumes went up in price too…
@odond368 ай бұрын
@@BeautifulBooks Ok, that's interesting. Appreciate you taking the time to respond :) Some are still fairly priced at the moment but I was shocked seeing people pay £140-200 for the Irish, Russia and Rome books. I got off easy it seems (£60, £70, £100). Have you seen any signs that they might reprint some of them? I'm not very impressed with their current direction. (Marvel, Bond, ect) Thanks for the great videos 👍

@@odond36 I haven’t seen anything about these being reprinted, but Folio seem to be experimenting with lots of different genres and binding designs lately!

Thank you for the excellent presentation. I have since been trying to acquire all the volumes in this series (barring The Odyssey and Iliad which I have in the Greek Classics set from Easton Press). I'm still holding out to find a crisp copy of The Icelandic Sagas II. Hoping to come across more wonderful publications on your channel.

Thanks for the kind words! (And apologies for delay in replying - I think your channel name kept redirecting your comments to my 'likely spam' box 😬- but it should be approved now!) Luckily the books in this series do come up (often sadly unread), but they did not produce as many of the second Sagas volume as the first, which makes it frustrating to find. Hopefully you do find some more publications you like on my channel (it's pretty eclectic 😂, but I hope that's a way for people to find new books they might otherwise not have picked up...)
@siddhantshrivastav5 жыл бұрын
@@BeautifulBooks If I may ask, do you not like Easton Press as a publisher of fine books? I know they aren't as good as Folio Society but I've found some beautifully produced Easton Press sets and was wondering why none of them seem to feature in your collection.
@BeautifulBooks5 жыл бұрын
@@siddhantshrivastav Yes, I do have plenty of Easton Press, I just haven't got around to featuring any of them yet (they're in the (very long) queue of videos I have planned). I collected them for a while when I was living in North America, but shipping to Australia where I am now made them prohibitively expensive and I had to stop. I think many of their DLEs are fantastic (albeit expensive), but most of the other books are based on much older Limited Edition Club / Heritage Press publications - which are not only cheaper, but the illustration reproduction is far superior in the originals. Lots of bargain HPs on the market (I've picked up a number for around $5!) although their bindings aren't fancy so they don't have the shelf presence of either EP or FS. Ah, choosing that perfect edition that fits your own sense of style is part of what makes building a personal library so much fun though, right?
@GRIMxGREEN5 жыл бұрын
I'm still trying to hunt down last three (Icelandic Sagas ** + The Iliad & The Odyssey). I cannot understand why they decided to change the look of the Irish volume, since it would match the series perfectly otherwise, and the illustrations are stunning. This made me feel like they are moving away from the series theme and look, but I hope to be wrong as I'd love to see more.
@BeautifulBooks5 жыл бұрын
Icelandic Sagas ** is often quite difficult to track down! Iliad and Odyssey come up a bit more frequently though. Unfortunately I haven’t heard of any plans to continue the series beyond these volumes - all the recent new mythology collections have been one-off volumes (although Japanese Tales is really lovely, have you seen that one?), and the smaller multi-volume reprints lack the colour washes of the originals.
@GRIMxGREEN5 жыл бұрын
@@BeautifulBooks Icelandic Sagas** can be seen here and there, but mostly as a set of two and not too cheap at that. Illiad & Odyssey are easier to find, unless one is looking for the quarter leatherbound volumes - these are more pricey and rare (and obviously, this would be the ones I'd wish to obtain). Illustrations in Japanese Tales look amazing, but I feel that the clothbound cover doesn't justify £75.00 price tag.
@BeautifulBooks5 жыл бұрын
GRIMxGREEN I hear you - Japanese Tales is definitely expensive. The cloth used for the binding is quite lovely though - it’s a very bright blue but not uniform thread colour - the combination gives it an almost silky look. Also worth noting it had a much smaller print run than their standard - only 2000 copies (which is almost a limited edition), and means it will likely be harder to track down second hand in future unless they reprint it. It’s also enormous - bigger even than the volumes in the leather bound myths series! Maybe I’ll try to include it in a future video?
