Alexei Markov was born in Vyborg. Began to study classical vocals professionally at the age of twenty-four. Took singing lessons from Alexander Dedik, and in 2001 he entered the Mariinsky Academy of Young Opera Singers where he studied under Georgy Zastavny.
Since 2005 he has been a soloist at the Mariinsky Theatre. At the theatre he performs lead roles from the baritone repertoire. In 2009 he was a recipient of the Golden Mask theatre prize for the role of Ivan Karamazov in Alexander Smelkov’s opera The Brothers Karamazov. That same year he was awarded St Petersburg’s Golden Sofit theatre prize for the role of Robert in Iolanta.
In 2007 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, performing the role of Andrei Bolkonsky in War and Peace (production by Andrei Konchalovsky). In 2011 he made his first appearance in Salzburg, followed by the Bayerische Staatsoper in 2013, the Bolshoi Theatre in 2017 and Covent Garden in 2018.
Recent engagements include appearances at the Wiener Staatsoper (title role in Eugene Onegin), La Scala (Shaklovity in Khovanshchina), the Metropolitan Opera (Tomsky in The Queen of Spades), the Semperoper in Dresden and the Aix-en-Provence Festival (Scarpia in Tosca) and the Grand Théâtre de Genève (Amonasro in Aida).
Took part in Mariinsky Theatre performances on tour to the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Carnegie Hall, the Barbican Hall, the Kennedy Center, Suntory Hall and the Philharmonie de Paris and at festivals in Edinburgh, Rotterdam and Baden-Baden as well as other venues.
