Johnny and the group did tune up a half step a lot early on. There’s a great vid online of them playing Big River where he’s playing E shapes and some members of the house band are fingering F chord progressions. It was a trick I believe Bill Monroe gets credit for though I’ve no idea if he invented it. Bill was VERY competitive and opinionated about his music. He always wanted the Bluegrass Boys to “pop” and stand out from all other Acts. Tuning up a half step made strong tension higher and gave more cut and volume. Thanks for all your lessons.

Nick, I just found this lesson when searching for one on Folsom. This is excellent teaching that anyone can follow and pick up. You have a talent for teahcing as well as playing guitar. This is coming from teacher of 43 years experience in the classroom. Your methods are stright forward and they make it easy for an inexperienced player to learn. Thank you so much for this lesson, and I will look for others of yours. Ane I will join as a paying member!

Dude, fanTAStic explanation. You nailed all the important aspects to be aware of instead of just directing through strings and frets. This is basically exactly how I explain it to my students. Nice work.

Hi NIck, I just found this page. It's great! I'm 65, pretty much a beginner, with surgery s on all fingers and both wrists.....They don't work so good anymore. Lol! I've heard someone play a version of the solo part lower than your version...somewhere within the first 5 or 6 frets. It seems like it would be so much easier for me and still sound ok. I'm wondering if you could do a tutorial or send me some tabs etc, if you know that version or could find it. I love old Johnny Cash tunes! Thanks Nick Joe

Debbie Horton the only female guitarist to play with Johnny Cash taught me how to do the boom chicka boom rhythm when she was here in NC she was very nice she also taught me Folsom prison blues I'm mostly self taught on guitar but I still like to learn new things and my buddy in Nashville makes me my own custom 8 Guage flats with a wound third I'm 20 turning 21 soon Luther is my guitar hero and the guitar in my profile picture is homemade built by me and my grandpa the shape was inspired by Earl Scruggs banjo me and Earl both being from Shelby NC

A thumbs up! Thanks coach! I shot a man just so I could watch him die....what a great line and how he got away with it so many years ago still amazes me. Its all in the delivery I guess. What a life force!

Luther was the all time "Amateur" guitar player who's playing is legendary today...no one ever got more mileage out of three note rhythm and single string solos.... all because his first amp was wired full volume and he had to tone it down with his palm so John could be heard.....

Great lesson. I think the 4th tab, the E an Em, is not shown quite right.
@SecretGuitarTeacher11 ай бұрын
Thanks for flagging that up. You are right - that’s an error in the graphics. Hopefully most viewers know how those chords are fingered and won’t be thrown by it !
@fahnert Жыл бұрын
Thank you for this lesson. Nice job. Some of the tab needs correcting. The E chord is shown looking like an Am. It should be shifted up one string each. Also, the B7 needs to show the strum after each single B note. 🙂
@brianodonnell19 ай бұрын
Agree, at 7.37 the tab needs to be fixed to be E rather than Am

although he was a great guitar player I was so disappointed seeing the "Highwaymen" with Reggie Young, he just added more guitar and could never play the cadence as good as Bob Wootton or Luther Perkins.
@AthelstanEngland4 ай бұрын
Yep classic case of "less in more" in Luther's playing, perfectly replicated by Mr Wootton.
