My wife and I bought 6.5 acres almost a year ago. Now our neighbor wants to sell us 4 or 5 more. House plans and all permits are almost finalized. I’ve been watching your ideas for almost as long. I didn’t know a damn thing about permaculture before this. Now I have all sorts of ideas swimming around in my head, starting with compost. And swales.

I am starting on the planning stages of my permaculture idea. It started on what we call the hill, but it's just an area held back by a retaining wall, but the idea's have spilled into the yard as well. While taking pictures of the area I wanted to start with (to create a better wind break for the house, but useful as well), I noticed the "hill" was more curvy then I thought was & William's A frame popped into my head. Curious of y'alls opinion: my city does not allow for rainwater catchment. Through my apartment, I do not have a water bill. Is there anything I can do when I collect this tap water to further improve its quality and store it for future use? TIA!
@grdelawter42662 жыл бұрын
Really? You live in an apartment, your water is free. Ok. You want to improve the taste/quality of the water? There are plenty of companies that do that, call them! Next, you want to collect and store water? You live in an apartment! How much do you want to store? Enough for 2-3 weeks? More? You need about a gallon to drink or cook and some more to wash dishes. You need most to flush the toilet! You’ll need some to lightly bathe. Probably about 4-5 gallons more per day. That equals a minimum of 7 gallons per day MINIMUM! You want to store about 2-3 weeks of water? Water weighs about 8 and 1/2 pounds per gallon X 7 gallons per day. = about 60 pounds per day X 17 days = OVER 1/2 TON! More weight than my truck can carry! The water storage will crush the floor down into the apartment below! You can not store more than about 10-30 gallons of water in 5 gallon containers in different rooms. It can last until you must leave. Water must be stored on the ground or concrete.
@jademoore74152 жыл бұрын
@@grdelawter4266 It is my intent to store it elsewhere. My city is always shutting off water for repairs and I would just like to have a back up and was curious if I could do something with what I have, first. Thanks for the info+

A swale is a non-compact earthwork for slowing and soaking water into the ground on contoure. In short swales are tree growing systems.
@grdelawter42662 жыл бұрын
In short, your not correct. A swale is a depression to collect and distribute rainwater instead of rain running away in one large flush then directing it where you want it to go. Trees are not required as part of a swale to make it work. The trees in this demonstration are planted to take advantage of the moisture present and held in the soil that makes the swales. I’ve built swales for 30 years to direct rainwater away to the ponds in new subdivisions for homes. Ours were designed to never hold water, but to move it to the ponds.

Love this system but have a question. If the aversge rain fall is 15 inches a year, i would still need a drip system in place?? I only have a little over 8 acres. I have already learned a bunch from you and appreciate the 3 of you. Thank you for all your information.
@nostalgia_junkie2 жыл бұрын
i dont know anything about anything, but i would think if you maximize rain infiltration via organic matter you wouldn't have to worry about drip irigation. i guess if its an absolute necessity you could run drip irrigation off rain or well water, but that's cash you may not have. me being cheap, i'd definitely try my hand at a pond in your situation. ideally any decently sized pond would capture enough rain water that if it didnt directly feed a crop, it would feed your aquapher, meaning more well water. though i guess that too could be expensive depending on the size of the pond and how many... maybe don't listen to me lol
