How can we eat well, make sure the land is well cared for, and ensure farmers get paid enough to grow good , sustainably grown food, and not use our resources importing crops we can grow at home?
Maddy Harland speaks with Kath Dalmeny who runs Sustain, a food and farming alliance. Kath explains how Sustain gathers together people with the knowledge and solutions who can prepare, cook, and grow good food, which is the building block of life. From there, we can scale up our influence and change policy that is fundamental to the health of our planet and a high percentage of the solution to the climate crisis. It doesn't get more important than that!

My take on not having cooking skills is, if you can read you can cook. And I also believe with you in buying as much as you can where produce comes from farms where there is a good steward of responsible farming practises in all senses of the concept.

I wanna recommend the Zac Effron show called, Down to Earth...he does a great job researching more conscious products and businesses. There's a red seaweed you can feed tiny amounts to cattle that reduces their gasses by up to 75% 😊

I think the key to being able to do all of that is to manage waste streams. We need to start feeding pigs veg, milk and meat waste. This would solve many problems at once. Also chickens need to be integrated into composting waste systems. Integrated arable farming, where animals become the fertilisers and pest controllers. This drives costs down and nutrient density up.

Industrial livestock farming removed these options as it caused health hazards. The only way we could return to these practices is by returning to small scale relocalised systems which of course is what is needed. These cannot supply cheap food in vast quantities so meat would be a luxury and a vegetable based diet would be necessary. It is the future but requires a huge cultural shift globally.

@@PermacultureMagazine they are only health hazards if they are aloud to be. We can have healthy meat produced for everyone if land is managed correctly. A plant based diet is no good for the human body.
