I’ve finally made the plunge to going stoveless. I still enjoy my alcohol stoves, but there is no denying the simplicity of this approach. This is also a decent list of foods for those not trying to go carb crazy while out on the trail.

I love my 1972 Coleman 2 burner stove. I carry it with me on my trips. Can't live without it. Sarcasm although once I did run into some backpackers in Yosemite with canned fruit and beans and yes you got it a two burner stove.

Coffee is the 1 reason I can’t go stoveless. Meals I can overcome, but I have to have hot coffee.

I completely understand that. Coffee is life! Luckily I just need coffee to be. Didn’t think I’d be ok without that first hot cup, but turns out my addiction is just intense.

Yeah, man. It is 202o and I can’t believe the amount of ppl who still carry all that dead weight. Come on, man. Those ppl lug all that dead weight for what? Pure dumb. Just try some couscous raisoIn , so nuts and such and soak it. Get back on the trail. Come on, ppl. Wake up! Drop the dead weights.

Hi... Thanks for the video! I've been debating with myself wet vs. dry food which coincides somewhat with stove vs. stoveless. To my mind, dehydrated foods are of course lighter, but I'll still need to take the water to rehydrate them later! (+ stove unless cold soaking) Wet food is heavier initially, but way more convenient, and no stove to carry around! Any thoughts?

So after doing several trips carrying wet foods and doing this latest trip using a traditional stove setup with dehydrated meals, I think I’m going to go with the latter for awhile. I like both options, but I actually saved weight, even with the stove. Obviously cold soaking would’ve been even lighter, but I didn’t want to wait on the cold soak (of course I could’ve started this process ahead of time, but...). One thing to note, I am very content to eat without variety on the trail which makes food choices extremely easy, especially dehydrated meals.

Tennessee Trekker: Ok, thanks for your insights! I spent 9 yrs in the military, but that was a whole different beast. You take the kit and food you're given, and go! With no stops until you get there! Now though, I get to choose! More like "Horses for courses" as we say in England. You choose the horse according to the type of race track. If the task ahead has fewer water sources, then wet food may be more appropriate. With more water available, then dehydrated food could make more sense. Though it's been over 20 yrs since my last hike/march, I still remember the moral boost a hot soup can give on a cold, wet night! And I do soooo enjoy my coffee in the morning! ;-)

Mad respect for you military folk rucking those insanely heavy loads! I agree about having a warm meal on a cold night. Big part of the reason I went with a stove along the Sheltowee Trace. Temps dipped below 0 Celsius. However, I’m still ok with doing cold coffee in the morning which helps speed things up so I can hit the trail.

I spent a week stoveless recently, and was pleasantly surprised. I ended up with a solution very much like this, except I did add some dried fruit for snacks during the day while hiking. More carbs than I would eat normally (I’m doing keto also), but they’re low-glycemic and what I did consume I burned immediately. For lunches I did hard salami and cheese sticks with packets of mayo or other sauces. Food weight came in at around 1.5 lb per day, and I saved a half pound of fuel weight. And I enjoyed the food. In the wet vs dry food comparison, you have to factor that fats are 9 kcal / gram and carbs are around 5. Fats don’t dehydrate well, so if you’re doing a high fat diet you have to figure on carrying some wet foods anyway, perhaps in the form of olive oil to add to your dehydrated meals, so the actual weight savings of dry food should be mitigated. I had plenty of calories at 1.5 lb per day, and I didn’t have to carry a stove or fuel.

I'm way too skinny to only be eating that. I envy all the people that are trying to lose weight on trail...

Hahaha! Well I still hike with people who carry everything they can, and that’s fine, it’s just not for me.
