This video, "Food Machine," is the first in a Public Broadcasting System series sponsored by Dow, "America Revealed," hosted by Yul Kwon. The series is available for viewing in its entirety, starting at www.pbs.org/ame.... "Food Machine" is a superb introduction to all the astonishing connections encountered in traditional basic economics. It introduces these issues by focusing on the delivery of a simple pizza.
This video is effectively a contemporary update of a classic introductory essay by Leonard E. Read, "I, Pencil," available at www.econlib.org.... A video interpretation of Leonard Read's "I, Pencil" is available on KZbin at • I, Pencil: The Movie .
I have uploaded this version to KZbin to make available a high definition version of this wonderful video, uninterrupted by advertisements and breaks which cut into the carefully crafted flow of connections. Careful attention to details along the way will reward the viewer with almost all of the intriguing issues encountered in basic economics.
This video is being used as one of the introductory elements in the website I am building at allisoneconomic.... It is a free site aimed at teaching anyone interested in obtaining a basic economics education. What I see as basic exceeds what introductory economics courses and textbooks currently see as basic. Unlike contemporary economics, it requires little mathematics beyond simple algebra and simple graphs. You are, of course, welcome to sample the site and, using the Contact page, give me your own thoughts along the way. Do not be disappointed if you are encountering the site in the last months of 2013. Construction has barely begun. The site will be under construction until well into 2014, so please be patient and return often to see updates.

In case anyone has the same worksheet as me: 1. 3,000 grocery chains in the U.S. 2. 3 crops in California Central Valley: onions, grapes, pistachios 3. 1/3 of all tomotoes are grown in California 4. 50% of all fruits and nuts in the US are grown in Central Valley 5. California has sun, temperatures, and soil but lacks water 6. The natural state of central California is dry (not sure) 7. Tunnels and canals were built to bring the water to the crops 8. The farms in Kansas are circular because of the center-pivot irrigation systems that are used 9. The average yield for wheat has increased 3 times in the last 60 years 10. 2 major changes that have allowed for better crops are fertilizer and irrigation systems 11. 80% of the farmland in the central US is corn 12. Most grocery stores have 45,000 products on the shelves 13. The most important part of selling food in restaurants is cravability 14. Restaurants used to be primarily for celebration food 15. An example of a cheap food that has been made into a major money maker is fried onions 16. On average, Americans eat 600 calories more each day than our ancestors 17. Water is as much as 50% of expenses for farmers in California 18. Agricultural pilots fly 8 feet off the ground at 150 mph to apply pesticides 19. Bugs develop resistances to the genetically modified crops 20. A combine or wheat harvester can cost $500,000 21. idk 22. The main way many plants are pollinated is by bees 23. The food machine involves 4 million workers 24. About 2% of our population works in agriculture 25. The organic farm in the guy's backyard is in Detroit 26. He started his garden because he thought something had to be done about the problems with our food machine and he could contribute by starting a garden 27. answers 1. pushing resources to the limit 2. water is in dams which we use 3. foods are genetically modified to taste and look better 4. mass production of water supplies and nutrients 5. center pivot irrigation to water their crops 6. whether corn syrup or the crop, corn is in everything 7. Large lots with cows 1300 lbs to kill them later 8. Artificial insemination is used to get the cows they want/ they bread cows specifically to be killed 9. perfecting shape and taste of food 10. they make strange foods you didn't know you really wanted ill you had it, they modify the food to make it more addicting 11. Water prices go up, they monitor how much water the plant needs 12. it helps kill weeds and other things that'll hurt the crops. This generally makes the crops less healthy though and can raise health concerns. 13. Genetically Modified Organism, can make the foods they want, especially more addicting ones 14. there are more options for technology 15. Bees pollinate from plant to plant, they can also do this with food, helping disperse the seeds across the globe. 16. less than 2% 17. growing it on a small scale for local communities 18. selling non-GMO and organic produce more 19. it impacts the American diets and there are more organic foods sold places 20. open answer Jesus loves you!

So much of what is WRONG with our food supply system is detailed in this show and GLAMORIZED and AGGRANDIZED as being needed and useful. GMO BT corn for instance. Do you REALLY want to ingest insecticide into your body? I mean, really. Even with the BT corn, they STILL have to spray even more chemicals due to resistance. Is that something that sounds HEALTHY? Do you REALLY want to have MORE pesticides and herbicides put on your food, just because the plants are resistant to them? Monoculture is the BIG culprit in this equation. Pests love it. Chemical companies love it. Monocultures will destroy either the food supply or us.

America Revealed - the Food Machine How many grocery chains are in the US and where do they get most of their crops from? There are 3,000 grocery chains in the US and they get most of their crops from California. What does California lack, but what does it have in abundance that makes growing there possible? California lacks water but they have great temperate climate for growing crops. How does California compensate for what it lacks for growing crops? They created tunnels and canals to control the water to the fields many miles away . Why are the shapes of many crops planted in Kansas circular? center pivot of irrigation systems that are used. How and why have crop yields increased in recent years? 3 times because of fertilizer and irrigation systems What is most farmland, in the central US, devoted to growing? What is made of corn in grocery stores? 80% of the farmland in the central US is corn. Most processed items in grocery stores. How has the frequency of going out to eat changed in recent years? Impact? People are adding more celebration foods to their daily diet. How has American caloric intake changed in recent years? What impact has this had? American calorie intake increased by 600 in recent years due to high quantities of food consumed daily. What role do agricultural pilots play in growing food? Agricultural pilots fly 8 feet off the ground at 150 mph to apply pesticides. Even though a lot of corn has been genetically modified to be resistant to the corn borer, what new problems are arising? Bugs develop resistances to the genetically modified crops. How are many plants pollinated? What is the problem with pollination today? Main way many plants are pollinated is by bees. Diseases within bees. Why are people starting to grow organic vegetables in their yard? Problems with our food machine and can contribute by starting a garden in their yard. What is an area of town has very few grocery stores or places to buy fresh produce? Food desert.

I expect so much more from you PBS!!! I could only get through half of this episode before i was sick of the cheery overly positive generalistic view of the malformed, destructive, corrosive, inept, and unsustained way of food culture that we have created and are successfully spreading to other nations. Our way of life has put our lives and our children lives in grave danger. I realize that not every documentary can be about the so called negative effects of every aspect of life but a realistic point of view about our food systems would have been nice. I do not know who reads this outside of commenters but hopefully someone with some authority decides things takes a look cause this is bad!!!

Lars Nilsson My issue is not what is actually happen. I'm a avid reader and documentary watcher. I've been watching PBS since i was very young. PBS in general does a great job of giving a balanced view on the topics that they show. But the fact is Oil is bad. Its been bad since we got it we just did not realize it till much later and now that every facet of our lives depends on Oil we are killing each other left and right just to seize it and control it. Not to mention the incalculable harm being doing to our planet. You say we're saving millions of lives. I say the opposite we are killing millions. how many will starve to death when we reach the oil tipping point, where its too costly to dig up. How many will die when we start truly going to war over the last reserves. Whats going to happen when you can't fill up at the pump. This is not some cockeyed notion thought up in my head this is real. You think the way that we process food is good. Than you'd be wrong. Monoculture will kill our stock with the right virus or bacteria the whole system will be shut down. Genetic diversity doesn't exist in out system. Pesticides are poisoning not just the environment but our bodies. We feed meat to cow and chicken to chickens we poison ourselves time and time again and you think this is good tech. Sorry but thats a narrow and blinded view of the actual world we live in. Read Food Nation. Lars it will be chaos trust and believe and my issue with this broadcast is the one sided view taken, because not everyone is like me. I don't just get my source of info from one source.

For Skyline AP Human Geo as of 2024, here's what I have: *NOTE PLEASE PUT THESE IN YOUR OWN WORDS IF YOU ARE USING THIS* 1. There are many vocabulary terms from the KBAT used in this video or hinted at. Please create a running list of those terms here. You do not need to define them, but be aware of them. *I have:* GMO, Food Desert, Sustainability, CAFO, and Urban Farming. Please notify me of more I am doing this last minute. 2. Consider the Theme of Human/Enviorment Interaction. Describe two ways in which man is modifying nature to better produce crops in the United States. Be specific in your example/support.(There are multiple examples in the video so I'll timestamp them) 8:41(Water irrigation) 14:08(Circular Fields/Transforming barren landscape into farm) 28:11(Again, barren landscape to prime onion farming area) 30:47(Irrigation again) 40:06(Turning abandoned house into farming area) That should be more than enough 3. Describe two of the advancements in technology that have been made since World War Two that have improved production of agriculture. Include how they have made an impact. *I have:* Irrigation wells, easier access to water Planes, for pesticide air strikes If you find more please notify 4. The film mentions a particular crop that is the most important product in our Food Machine. Identify what it is and how it is prevalent in what we consume. *I have:* Corn, which is used for Corn starch, a staple in most foods. 5. Describe what a large-scale feedlot business looks like and explain how they utilize corn within their operations. *I have:* It has a lot of machinery for faster production. They use corn to feed the animals. 6. Explain how Globalization has impacted food consumption in the United States. Again, be sure to use a solid example from the material. *I have:* Globalization has caused more production of crops, which can also cause surpluses. These surpluses cause the tomato fight we see. 7. Describe how the Food Industry creates food cravings and trends in the American diet. *I have:* The food industry creates food cravings using novelty and starting off with cheap prices. 8. Describe how pesticides are used by farmers and why. *I have:* Pesticides are used to kill off harmful bugs with air strikes, or if more precise removal is needed, a specialist. They are used because the harmful bugs can lower the quality of the food and cause health problems. 9. Describe the role Bees play in producing food. *I have:* Pollination. 10. In the United States it takes only _____ percent of the population to feed nearly all of the people. However, there has been a shift recently in the demand and methods of farming. Explain what that shift is and the role of local markets in it. *I have:* 2% for the fill in the blank, the shift is a comeback in organic non technology based farming. The role of markets is also a comeback in organic markets. 11. Considering what you have just watched and learned, describe one concern that is still faced by farming communities. *There are:* Colony Collapse Disorder and Pests evolving to resist pesticides, notify for more

i guess that's because they are genetically modified. originally, tomatoes are supposed to be tender after they ripen but gmo makes them more firm so that they can last longer and also because while buying tomatoes, we check how firm they are.
