Just for comparison's sake, I have organic short grain brown rice that I vacuum packed in mason jars in 2012 with oxygen absorbers added. It still smells good and tastes good. The jars are stored in the dark and kept as cool as I can manage. (I also keep white rice for longer term storage.)

I have had brown rice last for 13 years, not knowing it goes bad. My family had it stored in ziplock bags in the pantry. It tasted just fine like the day we purchased it. The rice was the brown rice purchased at Sam's club in the burlap bags.🤔🤔🤔 We do live in northern Minnesota where our house is cool year around.

Weird experience: Back before I started prepping and learning about food storage I threw a box of raisins into the refrigerator and forgot about it. When I had to move I found it, that was maybe 5 or 6 years later. Raisins were hard as rocks but still edible...and I did eat them all. Had to put them in cereal with milk to soften them but they were otherwise fine.

⭐️Provident Prepper.. PLEASE help us “newbies” understand some details on sealing certain items in Mylar Bags. For example: 1. With powdered milk, do we EMPTY the powder milk OUT of their store containers right into the Mylar bag , add oxygen absorbers, then heat seal: OR put the bags of powdered milk inside the Mylar IN their store packs? (it seems like bacteria from peoples hands and environment would be sealed inside the Mylar bag that way!!) 2. The same with gravy packs.. with or without store containment envelope? 3 Spices? For example, would curry powder bottles be put in the Mylar OR emptied out of store glass and put in Mylar with oxygen absorbers because in the bottle the absorbers wouldn’t reach the curry. 4. How about hot cocoa mix? 5. Beef jerky lasted pioneers years! So if they’re dehydrated, why wouldn’t they hold up in heat sealed Mylar with O2 absorbers? 6. How about bleached whole wheat flour? Bread flour? Cake flour? Baking soda AND baking powder? Does the baking powder stay in its aluminum container? 7. Pasta noodles? Do we empty plastic bags of noodles directly in Mylar bags? 8. And lastly but sooo important, YEAST in their little packets lined with reflective backing already? Would we empty the yeast packets into the Mylar OR place the previous company packets unopened in the Mylar with O2 absorbers? If I have these questions I’m positive other “newbies” like myself need to know as well!! Thank you so much for taking your time to answer these!! Our LIVES TRULY depend on your instructions!!🙏🏻

Thank you for the demonstration!! We eat more brown rice in our house than white rice. I keep a 5gal of brown rice that holds about 2-3 bags of brown rice from Costco. I store it in our cool, dark cold storage, but keep a container of brown rice in my pantry to access it during the week. When it is empty, I refill it from the 5gal bin. I don’t consider it as a long term food storage and we rotate it. I use brown rice for fried rice, too, in addition to being a side dish grain. The Family Freezer blog has a delicious fried rice recipe for brown rice.

I found out several years ago that using activated charcoal helps keep stored foods from getting the rancid taste. I started with a couple of small charcoal filters that came with a coffee pot. (We use filtered water, so no need for the filter) I couldn't say what it does for nutrition, but it does keep things tasting good. I found that you could get the activated charcoal used in fish tanks. For food like flour, I rinse the charcoal but things like beans that will get washed anyway I don't bother rinsing the charcoal. The charcoal can also be "reactivated" by soaking in brine overnight rinsing and drying in the sun. It is also a good idea to have activated charcoal in your emergency supplies.

I'm curious. If you polish the rice, does the rancidness go away? You do this by rubbing the grains between your hands so the outer husk is removed. I learned this from some Polynesians who did not want the husks as brown rice had arsenic in the husk.
@nguyenthanh-ws5bp
@nguyenthanh-ws5bp 2 жыл бұрын
@@gogogardener i think if you rinse the rice that went rancid, it'll not remove the husk, just the oil that went up on the surface. So it just decrease some amount of sting oil on the surface but still they are in the rice. The way you rinse rice by rubbing it will lost a few of nutrition. So it doesnt matter. Otherwise, also you need to macerate rice into water before cooking about 24 hours for a good cook.

The clumping immediately around the oxygen absorber pack is quite understandable. Commercial oxy packs release some moisture as they absorb oxygen. Church guidelines in the late 90's were very clear on this. NOTE: even white rice has a slight rancid odor after a few years' storage. Even without rinsing that odor dissipates with cooking.

I happened upon a way to store brown rice... before I knew better. I put the rice in a small plastic frosting bucket from the bakery. It lasted a few years. Although I washed the bucket well, I suspect there was a preservative in the frosting that the bucket absorbed.

I read there was a risk of botulism if you use an oxygen absorber with brown rice. Botulism grows in an anaerobic environment (lack of oxygen) combined with a higher moisture content like is in brown rice. So now I'm wondering if other whole grains should be used with oxygen absorbers like miller, buckwheat, amaranth??

A minor observation about metal cans: I have eaten a great quantity of canned food that was a decade or more beyond its "best by" date. Typically, the food has lost liquid over time. It's common to see the product level has dropped a quarter inch or so. I interpret this to mean the can seal is imperfect, with small channels that are large enough for water molecules to pass out of the can or oxygen molecules to pass into the can. In that case, an oxygen absorber could be depleted over 20 years. Fortunately, these speculative molecular channels are small enough to be a barrier to bacteria, so very old canned food is still safe to eat.

5:53 Even the best commercial chamber vacuum sealers can't get oxygen down to 100ppm. About 420ppm if you are very lucky enough to pull 99.8% vacuum. FoodSaver says 24-34% via the hose and 34-61% via the channel. So 138,600-159,600ppm for jars, and 81,900-138,600ppm for heat seal bags. So no matter what you will need oxygen absorbers.

We don't make brown rice often because my spouse doesn't care for it. My favorite way to make it is Spam fried rice, the color makes it look like it's already nicely fried and we can use less soy sauce. (Spam makes it less healthy, but more tasty lol.) Otherwise I just make a big batch of it, freeze it in portions, and have it with beans.

I’m sure you have commented on this but I need an answer soon hopefully. I have put 1 cup white rice into quart Mylar bags with a 300 cc oxygen absorber, pushed as much air out as possible and straight ironed the top a few times. A few of the bags stiffened up like they should, the others did not. Is the rice still good enough to store. I cut open the bags, checked for holes,added another oxygen absorber and resealed.Still did not stiffen up. Company says it nitrogen and things should be fine. But why did some of the bags stiffen up and the others did not. All had same amount of rice and new oxygen absorbers.

Thankyou, but The problem I have is being arthritic, white rice, like white flour burns all your nerves & in constant stinging pain riddled throughout whole body for weeks, so brown products don't sting nerves, providing the wholemeal products arn't grown in poisoned ground as this also intensly stings the body throughout. Hence why I'm interested in brown wholemeal storage. Freezer is good answer but if prepping for power outages, freezer not my answer. Sounds like just taking a chance with brown & or stinging internally with white rice & flour is better than starving.

Tyvk for your presentation. I have a question about oxygen absorbers. When I did the basic course on dry packing using oxygen absorbers and boiler or glass, I was instructed that oxygen absorbers only work well in mylar bags of a certain thickness, Because the oxygen absorbers don’t work well when light can hit them. So I’m very surprised to see you use them in clear glass bottles. I guess it depends on the way that they would work. If you’re storing them in the dark, and you were, do they just start working in the dark, and then when you take them out and bring them upstairs into the light, they release the oxygen that they had absorbed? And if that’s the case, when you’re doing your bagging and packing, it well-lit environment The key to opening up the oxygen absorbers and depositing them in your containers the key to keeping them from saturating themselves with the ambient air? I’d sure appreciate your feedback.

Oxygen absorbers work by bonding with iron to form iron oxide (iron ore) aka rust. You need extreme heat to release the oxygen to get it back to iron. Sunlight although not required will speed up the process not slow it down. Oxygen absorbers have salt and carbon with the iron powder to speed things up. It's only the food that doesn't like light. So for the longest life protect food from Pests (rats & insects), heat, light, oxygen, moisture, just remember PHLOM

many people who don't like brown rice, like it a LOT better when it is cooked with more water! yes it takes longer to cook, and you are making it softer and , in my opinion, less flavorful by pumping it so full of water, but some people do prefer it. other folks prefer it lightly toasted/fried in oil prior to cooking in water. for myself, since i am *usually* eating rice with a flavorful sauce or topping, a heavy gravy or cheese... (Mmmmm cheeeeeeeesssseeee) i dont actually get much of the flavor of the rice at all.

I'm not convinced that brown rice only lasts a few months. I bought some that's prepackaged in a plastic bag and it has a best before date of 9/2024 printed on it. As you can see from the date of my comment that's 2 years away. Bear in mind that it's a Best Before not a Use By date so could be used after much longer if stored properly. Peace

That scent is totally unmistakable….and sooo undesirable. For me, I am going to skip the brown for storing. In fact, I just tossed a half-gallon jar of brown rice from my everyday pantry because of the odor. It just does not live long. 😉 I have boiled wheat berries and used them as a brown rice substitute. They’re nuttier and a bit more chewy (in a good way). 🤷🏼‍♀️

Bring it to a rolling boil and then drain, same again and cook and it's pretty OK. Not great but OK.

Has anyone vacuum packed brown rice with oxygen absorbers in Ball Jars and stored in the FREEZER? Is this the solution? I don't want to waste what I already purchased.

Great video. Thank you. When you talking about washing off the rancid oil’s after soaking it, why not soak it in a little bit of soapy water. And then rinse all that out. Soap is much better at removing oil’s Than plain water is.

What if you freeze dry the brown rice?

If it's frozen in a moisture resistant/proof packaging, it will prolong the shelf life. I keep DIY ghee, tallow and lard in the freezer for the same purpose. To slow down rancidity. Those I don't vacuum seal. I'm sure vacuum sealing ahead of freezing would extend shelf life further.

@@TheProvidentPrepper Now, I'm wondering if a vacuum sealed jar of anything will actually hold the seal in a freezer. It wouldn't with freezing water, as in soup, in the jar. Might with rice which wouldn't expand as much if frozen. Maybe that might be a part of your video, too.

Why do you say in this video that you cannot store dry eggs long term? What is actually your definition of long term? Because they actually sell very good powdered eggs with a shelf life of 10 years. They put the fresh scrambled eggs and a freeze dryer and then put it into a food processor and turn it into powder and then seal it properly for long term storage for up to 10 years are you saying that this doesn't work it is so why? there seems to be a lot of people on the Internet who say that this does work and that the powdered eggs are able to be stored long term
