Food Waste In Indonesia Mounts, Along With Malnourished Children | CNA Correspondent

Indonesia is one of the world's largest food wasters, throwing away more than 115 kilogrammes of food per person each year.
Food waste losses occur across all stages of the supply chain and consumption. Yet, millions in the country suffer from malnutrition, with 1 in 3.5 children facing problems with their growth development or stunting. This is an ironic problem to have, where over 50 percent of daily waste consists of leftover food.
At Indonesia's largest landfill in West Java, scavenging for a living has become a norm. Residents scavenge for items that can be recycled for cash and food that is still edible. Money from the trash is used to feed themselves and their families.

Lack of refrigeration creates a lot waste because people are selling on the street. Also, sellers would rather let their fruits and produce rot than sell at it discount or donate it to needy people. Rotten mangoes are more expensive in Indonesia than fresh mangoes in the US. Greed generates a lot of food waste in Indonesia, but people still complain about food prices. How about respect for the farmers who work in poverty to put food on your table?

Thanks CNA! this topic is so relate. C'mon indonesian, back to the rule "Jangan Mubadzir!". I'm sure, all of you have learned this word since your childhood. Eat what you buy, and finish the food that already served on your plate. When you're not sure with both of them, don't buy too much or share it to your neighbor. While for the big scale industry, government need to make another rule how to manage this leftover food so it will not thrown away directly to the waste bin like that. Every big scale food industry has an obligation to deliver their edible food to the community who need it

I believe that most of the food waste comes from unsold cooked/processed food and unsold veggies at traditional and modern market, compared to leftover on individual plates and take aways. This could indicates that we supply more than domestic demand. I wish, bussiness owners like restaurans, minimarkets, SMEs and food industry would be responsible for giving the edible, unsold food to others

I've uses food waste as topic for my campaign task twice. I do know that Indonesia is the one of the biggest country who have high food waste, I do know that bantar gebang have that high mount of trash, but I do not expect that some people actually eating good quality food from that food wasted. It is so heartbreaking and horrible reality. We need to change, we all, to stop this food wasting.

And it is such a typical Indonesian government officials responding to a media interview: it is DIFFICULT to do bla bla and bla! I was like ... dude, we pay taxes and hire you to take care of whatever problems arise in your department. Responding that it is such a difficult problem to handle on your own department is definitely an insult to us as taxpayers. I think if you would like to cover food waste, it should include whether the citizens are aware of the garbage system. There should be a law about throwing trash and limited using plastic bags. If you would like to cover stunting...it should not be in the same video as food waste.

I think to reduce malnourished children is to educate young women how to protect and prevent/control pregnancy. If they cannot provide food for themselves, what more for the child(ren). I hope workers from family clinic can help educate people in poverty.
