I went to an “all you can eat” buffet once which had a great system. You could refill your plate as many times as you liked, and there was a set price BUT you paid extra for every gramme of food you didn’t eat. That means that people didn’t fill their plate and left half of it sitting there when they left, but they took a little and went back for seconds (or more) if they wanted more. It’s the little details that matter when it comes to food waste.

Part of that practice is consumer-developed. Almost all consumers look for the perfect apple/orange, etc. and pick only those. Then, other fairly good produce gets turfed at days end simply because it won't sell, even though there is nothing wrong with it. Same with non-perishable food that comes in packages. Damaged can or box? Sits on the shelf. I've tried to commit myself that if I can swing it based on my needs, to buy up products that would otherwise sit on the shelf. A damaged box with food in sealed packages inside or dented can is really a non-issue as long as the food is still fresh/safe and you can open the can. Same with fruit or veg. If I'm using it that night and it's bruised - I don't mind. Expiry date on meat for that evening? Cool. I challenge everyone to do the same where possible. I also keep my fridge only provisioned for 3-5 days at most. This means I shop more often (as it's not inconvenient for me), but can also take transit home than have to flag a taxi. My food is fresher this way, I can buy more good but not perfect product, and I rarely waste food because of it. Also, in the case of a power outage, I also don't have to worry about wasting hundreds of dollars of frozen and refrigerated goods.
@moosesandmeese9694 жыл бұрын
A big part of this food waste problem is how we buy food. In the US and Canada, cities are spread out so you make long drives to these massive grocery stores at the edge of town, and because of that, you tend to stock up for the next week or two weeks. As a result a lot of that food ends up going to waste. It's unsurprising that the US and Canada have the biggest food waste problems which are tied to poor city layout. Compare this to European or denser US cities where grocery stores are on each corner, and since people drive much less, they often buy food in smaller quantities only for the next day or two. Less food gets wasted this way. City planning and zoning can play a huge role in reducing food waste. By using less strict zoning, spreading out grocery stores, and making short trips possible, cities can massively reduce food waste.

This wide car-centered form of living was created due to fear of black crime and lobbying by car & gas companies. Jagan Joseph no they don't want bums hanging around for a free meal. I worked in a grocery store, homeless people hanging around begging was bad for the stores image and makes customers go elsewhere, that was the reasoning my manager gave me.

Nicole As someone who dumpster dived out of desperation: no one goes while the store is open. We all go at night, when no one is around. Because we don't want to get caught and/or have the cops called on us. It literally is just greed. (Also I wasn't homeless when I did it, neither are any of the others I know who do it/have done it. Or that I've met while out.)

Jagan Joseph Lol no. There is perfectly good untouched food in there. It's even all wrapped up in plastic a lot of the time. Plus dumpster divers avoid perishables. A friend and I once scored 28 packs of ramen and 16 packs of cookies. They were still in their cling wrap from the skid!

One of the things I found to have a gigantic impact is making shopping lists and sticking to them. Usually, my dad would do the groceries by memory, but we’d always end up with a good few products at the end of the week that were spoiled. After he got cancer and couldn’t go into public places, me and my mom took that over and we started making lists because we needed the crutch as to not forget anything. Now, we throw out a bit of rapidly aging fruit (think strawberries and the like)… and that’s about it. Maybe the odd bit of meat that went off before its date, but that is not something we have much influence over.

i've also noticed that when you get a big plate and don't fill it, people will be like "that's all you're eating?" even when it's a good amount already and then when there's free food laying out, there's usually a hesitation to go grab it, like everyone is waiting for the first group to go and then follow like "oh it's ok to eat this." i guess that's cause of trying not to look "fat" or whatever and also bc of social instincts just to follow, but it's dumb and a lot is wasted just cause of that. idk how to explain it but hopefully that got across well.

Didn't like your meal and took two bites out of it? Throw it away. That package of ham expired today? Don't even bother checking if it's still fresh or not just throw it away. I can go on for awhile. When all else fails I put the food in my compost pile and let the squirrels, raccoons, opossums, cats, birds, insects and any other critter eat what they want. Nothing goes to waste in my house. Here are some tips to reduce food waste: -go grocery shopping on a full stomach. If you go being hungry you'll feel inclined to buy more food (which you probably don't need) -if you live with roommates, buy some things collectively (bread, ketchup, cereal) that you know are at risk of going bad if each buys their own -if you're gonna buy a food item you haven't tried before, buy only a little in case you don't like it -don't throw wasted food directly in the trash can, instead throw it in an airtight see-through container. This will help you be conscious about what you throw away -use small plates and small cups. You can always refill them but it will be hard to grab more food than you can finish.

This is a big problem of the western world. Here in India, homes contribute to a very small portion of the total food waste. If we think that the food is not good for human consumption, we feed it to stray animals and the animals are more than happy and it doesn't even affect their health. Food wastage is discouraged by our culture and we are happy that it isn't too big of an issue atleast here.

I admit, it is one of my mental hangups. I eat meat once or twice a week, but I make sure to eat all of the meat because I feel like it is rude to the animal to waste any of its contribution.
@heartSLB7 жыл бұрын
puddin' do you see any one that eats meat giving you a hard time because you're vegetarian? No. then stop giving meat eaters hard time because we eat meat. And food wasting is a problem of the rich. humans are naturally like that, if they have a good life they don't care with their wastes. On the other hand, if you're struggling to get things in life, you're value them more.

Something I noticed is that in Mexico, there isn't as much food waste, because people can't afford to waste a lot of food. You are raised in a way that teaches you not to waste anything because you should repurpose as much as you can. Even if you are very well off, it's just the way of thinking that everything has to be used to its fullest, and food waste just feels wrong.

I worked in an office where they held lunch/dinner meetings. One of my jobs was to clear out these rooms. Often there was untouched, fresh food left over. Our instructions were to throw it out, but I, and my co-workers would eat it.

When I first came to the states and went to elementary school, I saw so much food being wasted. Like kids not even touching their trays and then throwing it away, so much bread being throwing away, milk jugs of them not being drank. And bananas and fruits, salad trays being wasted. Also ketchup packets.Some kids just got food because it was free and teachers wanted everyone to eat. Even today at middle school a lot of kids just play with their food instead of eating it, it’s honestly very sad…

Our decisions are important to make the different, but WE NEED TO BE AWERE THAT OUR CHOICES AS CONSUMERS ARE THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG. For exemple, supermarkets and big companies have taken the market of food. In a way, it makes the prices go down, but at the same time more food is waste. There is differents reasons: On the one hand, the producers have to produce more for the supermarkets, wich ask for more than what they are gonna sell, and in the other hand, the consumers sometimes buy more than what they really need, not only because of choise, sometimes its even more cheap to buy more, and also there is a strong marketing to make the consumers buy more. Moreover, there is HUGE COMPANYS that control the global market,so when they need to rise the price, they just throw food away.
@hotshotpc Жыл бұрын
I didn’t realize how much food gets wasted until I got a job at a kitchen in a supermarket. They have a hot bar where people can take what they like and by the end of the whatever doesn’t get taken gets dumped. Typically 3-4 buckets full (100+ pounds) of food gets tossed every single day. It always bothered me.
