No annoying music or commentary, prices shown and no BS. Just quick, unadulterated closeups of masters plying their trade. These guys deserve Michelin stars. Love it!

More than 20 years ago, Penang was still the food capital on Malaysia. Since then. the food quality had dropped so much that the Chief Minister then (Lim Guan Eng) complained publically how Penang food have become. Sadly, Penang food quality continues to drop and there is no way to revive them to its former glory days.

The Malaysian fried rice cakes, char koay kak, reminds me a lot of the Vietnamese fried rice cakes, bánh bột chiên, that I ate recently. It's interesting how this dish exists so similarly in different countries. The inclusion of eggs and chives is virtually the same. The biggest variation is the shape of the rice cakes. The Vietnamese version has a more square-like shape. Also, the char kway teow in this video caught my eye too since I ate char kway teow recently as well. It seems the version here is relatively lightly seasoned and not copiously cooked with spicy paste or chilis. No cockles or Chinese sausage or pork belly. It appears to be a fairly "light" iteration. But, I bet it has a lot of wok hei. I'm struck by how black and seasoned that wok looks. The wok spatula glides against that slick wok surface. The sound of the two coming together indicates that.

The taste of all these Penang famous foods have dropped so much that it is not worth the ringgit to eat them anymore. Penang locals know better. When the prices of ingredients rise, hawkers skim on using less ingredients, thus compromising the taste of the foods. Chinese hawkers are very profit oriented. They like to skim here and there to make sure they can still maintain their high profit. They don't care so much about the quality of the foods. After all they know their name is famous, tourists will still come to patronize no matter what. But I think it is just a matter of time when people realize that the taste is going down the drain. And people will be quick to share it on social media. Once gone down the drain, it will be hard to revive it. I brought a few friends from KL to try the food here. Everyone of them were very disappointed. They feel that the foods in KL taste better, and the prices in Penang were very close to those in KL. At some places in Penang the prices were equivalent to KL but the quantity is less than in KL. Gone are the days of good tasty foods. The new breed of hawkers are more interested in making money. Take an example, the famous Teow Chew Cendol at Leboh Keng Kwee. Recently I went to try it out. I was left disappointed with the taste. Now it is run by the third generation of owners. You will be shocked if I tell you that the Indian hawker stall selling cendol taste better hands down! Fortunately there are still a handful of hawkers who still care to maintain the quality of their foods. Only a handful, if you know what I mean.

I fully agree with you about the Teow Chew Cendol at Leboh Keng Kwee quality. I'm from Singapore and was very eager to taste this stall's cendol a year ago, and left very disappointed. Felt some stalls in singapore sell better tasting cendol than this one.
