I worked for a year at an army ammunition plant (technical guy, IT department). We convinced our branch to allow us to observe the test facility when they were testing 20mm rounds from a Vulcan. The sound... the rumble... was unbelievable. We were 20 feet away, around the corner of a concrete building, behind a sheet metal wall with observation portals. We could still CLEARLY feel the shockwaves. My sternum was vibrating within my chest. Dust from the ground around us was lifting. AND? It was firing at one quarter the normal speed. We were issued ear plugs AND acoustic over-the-ear muffs. Deafening roar.

I read some where about 10 yrs ago that the Navy was going to sink one of it's older ships by shooting it with gunfire ! Apparently after an hour or so it was well holed but still not going down so they allowed 2 A-10 "warthogs" to try and in less than 15 minutes the warthog sank her by coming in low strafing her below the waterline! Now that would be a Gas of a way to spend the afternoon !

Despite the media ,americans care. We are from everywhere, yeah we can get nationalistic but its hard to be about us without being about where we are from. If we aren't Vietnamese, for example, we have a friend who is. Humans are like that, not only us and our tribe but who those in our tribe say is our tribe. If anything, the complexity in the US (and many european countries_ is no longer associating tribe with ethnicity but something more crebral. We will always be human, and limited in our capacity to care. The best we can do is try and find a way to navigate this world where we can be cared for and not harm someone else. This has clearly become hard for us, but we'll pull through like we always do (as humans).

The cool thing about the bullets themselves is that when they explode they fragment which gives them much needed accuracy by just increasing the area in which the bullets hit. Its literally like shooting a shotgun slug that explodes just before it gets to the target and then turns into birdshot so its actually way more effective in taking down aircraft than one would think

The C-Ram is pretty efficient, the tracking system can determine trajectory in order to ignore non threatening rockets. It is also good enough that the OPs Center can pinpoint the source location of the rocket. The enemy usually used washer/dryer timers on their mortars so would be long gone by the time we got to the source. These setups also used DIY tubes so were very inaccurate, their sole purpose was to hit indiscriminately, break morale and give Pogues a reason to file PTSD claims.

C-RAM is the land based version of the Phalanx weapon system, or CWIS in Naval parlance. It's a last ditch defense against incoming artillery shells, mortar shells, rockets, or missiles. The US is augmenting this system with more mobile vehicle based systems like IM and DEM SHORAD on modified Stryker chassis, and last I heard was doing initial capability trials on the Israeli Iron Dome system, which is a missile based system that can really put a ton of interceptor missiles into the air on simultaneous targets and has a larger engagement envelope than the gun based systems.

The M940 20mm MPT-SD is $27 (USD) per round. The C-RAM expends $2,025 of rounds per second of firing. One soldier costs the US about $100,000 to train and equip. Then a few tens of thousands for ongoing upkeep One 155mm landing on target can kill a hundred. Mind you the "death gratuity" and life insurance totals $500,000, paid to each soldier's next of kin. So the government is out $600,000 for one solder getting killed. the C-RAM is *CHEAP* in comparison. Yes, it's a logistical flex, but we play to our strengths.

I think every 6th round is a tracer (the red bullet you see). So the fact it looks like red whip says a lot about how many bullets are flying at you

Just a friendly reminder there's 3 bullets in-between every tracer bullet you see coming from the Balkan. That's alot of BRRRT.

Russia is only powerful because of its massive nuclear arsenal. They still don't even have precision-guided missiles in any large numbers. And their hypersonic missiles have yet to be tested in action so far.

If I remember right 1 in 4 bullets is a tracer. So you only see a quarter of the shots fired.

The CIWS (Closed In Weapon System) that you saw is designed to shred an incoming air craft or missile with multiple rounds hitting it all at once.. The CIWS Block 1-B has a firing rate of 75 rounds per second with a maximum range of approx. 3.4 miles. You would not want to be on the receiving end of it's display.

I got to see a small demo firing of the CIWS (the ship version) once aboard a publicity event on the Roosevelt. Two hundred rounds in a very loud "BRTT." It was so fast they decided to reload the demonstration and do it again.

BRRT. Thats it? Did it misfire? No, it ran out of ammo. That was 200 rounds, it took longer to pull the trigger. Yes. ....RELOAD.

The C-RAM is computer guided it's all automatic it does it on its own. And they take down the mass majority of incoming threats it's not a lucky shot kind of thing.
