Cream then jam. That's a fact.
@letni9506

I always thought it made sense to put the cream on first like you would butter.But then the jam spreads easier on the dry scone and you can just put a dollop of cream on top. After testing I prefer to pile the cream on after as I prefer the taste of it on my palate to the jam. But if you love jam then you'll probably prefer to put the cream on first. Tastes good either way.

It’s definitely pronounced Scone, as in posh, rhythm with ‘cone’ before you’ve eaten it. After you have eaten it it’s definitely Scone ‘gone’!!

Only way is the Cornish way, you missed out on the best cream though, get yourself a tub of Rodda's clotted cream and then you will be proper.......!! Best fish and chips in that area is Chandler's Plaice in Hayle, if you indulge phone for a slot as they are so busy......

Did a taste test years ago and was firmly on the Devon team (as could pile more cream on and less messy) but just done another test and yes, the initial taste of the cold thick cream on top does taste better than an initial blast of sweet jam. It’s Cornwall for me from now on!

The word scone is a Scottish word. It entered the English language via the Scots language, so by definition how it is pronounced in Scotland is the correct way, and in Scotland it is always pronounced to rhyme with ‘gone’ and never ‘cone’. Argue over your jam and cream all day long but there is no debate on pronunciation. You either pronounce it correctly or you don’t. Oh, and jam first then cream definitely tastes better.

don't get me wrong: I love scones with my cream tea... but why do a lot of people really like the Cornish scone better? Is this because they put jam first then cream on top, otherwise it tastes less sweet and more buttery? Or is the taste better? Or does it look more cleaner? and for me: I don't think that's right, to be honest; I really prefer cream first then jam on top, that's from Devon... duh...

I would say scone, as in cone, throne or phone. There is no right way, but if the scone is still warm, it's jam first. That way the cream doesn't melt and fall off. If the scone is cold, then cream first, so the jam doesn't slip off. I think butter and jam is actually a different county all together, Dorset or Somerset, I can't remember.

Legend has it that the Cornish are proud of their cream so they show it off and put it on top. The Devon cream is not as good so it's hidden under the jam. Also, shouldn't be using the same knife for both cream and jam.
