Most varieties of figs dont require a wasp to fertilizer them. They are self fertile figs. I have about 15 varieties of fig trees and none require fig wasps since they are common figs meaning they are self fertile. Smyrna figs require a wasp for the breba crop and main crop. San Pedro figs dont require a wasp for the breba crop but do for the main crop and common figs do not require fig wasps at all. In the US If you go down to your local home depot the fig trees they sale are always common figs unless you are in California.

The gentleman in the video has gone to Turkey to explain the matter of caprification, as if there were no common figs closer, for example Spain, where there are areas in Granada, where the technique is still used for the San Pedro and Smyrna varieties. , but together there are more parthenocarpic varieties than the other two. For the record that I have all three types, about 40 common and about 20 between San Pedro and Smyrna -

I used to have a fig tree in my backyard in Australia. I'm guessing it was a self-fertile one. Is there even any benefit to non self-fertile trees?
@Mark-zu6oz3 жыл бұрын
@@Icex7 Not unless you want viable seeds from the tree, or there is a particular variety you want that requires pollination. Actually the term self-fertile for fig trees is a bit inaccurate. What happens is that the tree produces fruit which contains no seeds at all.

In California, I grew up on the Mission fig. Never heard about wasp pollination or eating old wasps. Shockers!
@ortcutt3 жыл бұрын
The Mission fig is a parthenocarpic fig, so it produces fruit even without the fig wasp. Most figs are like this. California also produces Calimyrna figs, which are basically the Smyrna figs that you see in this video. These rely on the wasp, which were introduced to California in the 19th Century specifically to fertilize these kinds of figs.
Finally a proper explanation about figs and wasps.

Do you grow commercially? Hanging a bag of male figs helps the natural process & increases yield, & yes, even your tree needs wasps.
