Filipino American here. Yeah, when my family immigrated here, my closest friends are Mexicans and some blacks. And my best friend in college is Puerto Rican. They just claim me as one of theirs since they said I look Mexican and I have a Spanish name! 😂 Honestly, The Philippines and Mexico have so many similarities in their culture and it’s because of its ties to Spain. When the Philippines was a Spanish colony for over 300+ years, the Spanish governor of Mexico was also in charge of the Philippines so there was a trading route between the two countries for hundreds of years. There were Mexican and Filipino sailors in those Spanish galleons and some of those sailors ended up moving to the Philippines and Mexico. What I mean is, some Mexican sailors moved to the Philippines and some Filipino sailors moved to Mexico. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some Mexicans with a small percentage of Filipino blood and vice versa! It’s funny because a lot of Latinos say that we’re like the Mexicans of Asia and that you guys are our distant cousins! 😂 Eventhough we don’t speak Spanish, our national language does have some Spanish words in it. It has 30% Spanish words so if you hear us talking, you might catch bits and pieces of our conversation. We also have one of our dialects called Chavacano and it’s a Spanish creole language still spoken in the southern Philippines.
