Saw every damn one of these groups at MR LUCKY'S, the MARIGOLD, SHLIEF'S LITTLE CITY, the MARION, the SAFARI, etc. Used to help the UNDERBEATS, ACCENTS, CHANCELLORS, & AVANTIS set up at LUCKY"S more than just a few times!!! This music is the story of my teenage years!!!

Mr. Lucky's was a good place to get your butt kicked back in '64. Good memories.

Got my ass kicked on the dance floor by Bob Morgan and about half a dozen of the LITTLE BOYS from COLUMBIA HEIGHTS one night in February or March of '64!!!

Seriously!? I knew all those guys and hung out with them. Bob was not one to mess with. The Little Boys jackets were black and bottle green. I lived in Heights for about 3 years on 46th & 6th St. NE.

I was from NE MPLS (Edison '65) and hung out with and partied with the LITTLE BOYS for a helluva long time before a chick I dumped turned a bunch of 'em (including MORGAN) against me...that's why I got my ass kicked by 'em!!! After that I hung out with the SUPREES until I enlisted!!! I wore my GREEN & BLACK BUTWIN thru the 60s...finally let one of my boys have it to wear in '93!!! Oh yeah...first time I heard the UNDERBEATS was at the CAMDEN BALLROOM in the late summer of '63...we got our asses kicked by the PRIMAS that nite!!!

Some of the guys I knew were Bryan Gerdin, Jim Peterson, Sam Ardito, Andy Smoka, Daryl Hilgis, the Traver brothers, Mike O'Keefe, Guy Super, and a bunch I forgot. I graduated in '66. There were a lot of dances at the Heights Field House across the street from the police station. Rocket Pizza was a big hang-out.

Listened to the original by the Flares. No comparison. The Underbeats souped it up with jangly surfish guitar and put out a GREAT song.I'll take this every time!!!!

So much better when done by the Flares.

I can't understand why any group or individual would rerecord a previous hit that was FAR better than their recording even comes close to. Listen to The Flares. Maybe the guitar solos were pretty good, but the voices and timing...ich.

I didn’t know they didn’t write it! That being said Jim was a top guitar player.....the timing was a little sloppy but that was part of the “sound” then, that and the voices were kinda pre punk. It was meant to capture the culture in Minneapolis at the time. This was the Baldie culture, boy dressed kinda like their dads, especially the wingtip shoes which were perfect for the baldie stomp along with the nodding of the head. I did listen to the Flares version which was kinda r&b. I much preferred this Minneapolis sound, of course I’m from Minneapolis. Vanilla Fudge made a whole album of other people’s song and it was quite good.
