This is the Iowa I remember growing up. Thanks to Karris and Kaul for all you have done for Iowa.

My neighbor and friend Bob did the first 39 ragbrais. He had stories. He encouraged me.

Overall, much thinner riders than today’s riders and those small towns look more prosperous than their current state. Btw Governor Ray had the roads in better shape too! Great time capsule.

The only main difference between 1974 and 2022, is the number of riders. Thanks RAGBRAI for keeping the tradition going, even though TJ Juskiewicz and his team tried to do their best to kill it after the 2019 ride.

That acronym was going to be a problem in Year Four.

The average rider was a lot thinner back then

Wow, look at all that old gear :) How far bicycle touring has come. I did RAGBRAI in 2012. I will do it again.

No helmets, no lycra, I participated in R4, made it across Iowa on $50.

@@Bardwell_Junction Ah yes back in the day. Life was simpler. Today I always wear a helmet.

@@longrider42 Me too, but in mid 70's, MSR & Bell were just introducing bike helmets. If some one was using a helmet, it was probably leather covered foam! Iknew a few people who used CCM Hockey helmets just for some protection. By 1981when I did Ragbrai again, I had a Bell "Turtle shell". The other ting I found interesting, is the lack of "cycling kits". people rode with whatever they had, cut offs, t shirts etc. if you owned cycling shorts, they were either wool or acrylic and had a real leather chamois. Bicycles had 5 or 10 gears, and Mafac brakes could be heard 100 yards away! I kept a notebook in '76 of all the different bicycle brands I saw, and had over 70, including some very early "graphite" frames. Everything from Huffy, AMF, Free Spirit to Teledyne Titans. Life was much simpler in a lot of ways, not sure about better, but you didn't read about mass murders every couple of weeks either...

That was Clarence Pickard wirh the Pith Helmet. He was in his 80’s. Who wrote this effed up script?

I rode Sagbrai and I also thought it was Mr Pickard. He wore a wool sweater too. I remember that Thursday evening the ambulance broadcast President Nixon’s resignation from office. But the week was awesome and something I’m still proud to have been a part of.
