Whoever asks for the date should pay, however it is still common courtesy to offer to pay for your share regardless. If I ask the guy out on a date, I'd be happy to pay since it was my idea. If he asks me out on a date, I believe he should pay - however I would still offer to pay half, just cause for me that's the polite thing to do. Sometimes money can be tight but that doesn't mean that you can't still go out on dates together, meaning 50/50 works well. A date doesn't have to be super fancy or expensive at all - so I wouldn't judge a guy for not taking me some place that would break the bank. I'm happy with regular pub grub or even fast food. What matters is if you enjoy your time together, not how fancy the place is, otherwise what are you going on a date for? To get to know the person, or to get princess treatment?
