In Johan Cruyff's first season ahead of FC Barcelona, the Catalan team would face CSKA Sofia, from Bulgaria, in the semifinals of the European Cup Winners' Cup, which featured an as yet unknown Hristo Stoichkov.
In the first match, in Spain, Catalan won 4-2, but with two goals from Stoichkov. In the return match, another Spanish victory, by 2 to 1, again with Stoichkov scoring and being the highlight of the Bulgarian team. This confrontation would introduce the striker to the Dutch coach who, in the following season, would take him to play for the Spanish giants.
