Bishop Edward O’Dea felt the need to create a Catholic Seminary around Seattle Washington as early as the 1920’s. By 1896 the Northwest had 46 Catholic churches and less than 20 priests. Seeing a strong need O’Dea dedicated his life and most of his personal wealth to developing a seminary in the area. in 1925 climbed atop a large stump, surveyed the lakefront view and proclaimed, “This is where we will build the seminary.” During the depression, Bishop O’Dea raised $100,000 and the diocese secured a loan of $200,000. Renowned Seattle architect John Graham was hired to design the buildings and site. The original design was to include four (4) buildings.
Built between February and September 1931it grew from a 6-year seminary to the only fully accredited 12-year seminary in the United States at that time. The building is made of poured concrete and stone. Lumber used to make the forms and other items as needed was cut and milled right on the property. A time capsule containing certain objects was sealed and laid on October 13, 1930.
.
The seminary closed in 1976 due to declining enrollment.
