When you really break down these concepts you realize at their core they’re not very complex. The principles still stand: do the shit you don’t wanna do to allow you to do the things you’re good at, and everything can work if you have a planned with intention

One thing I like from this position (and I can't believe I'm gonna say this) is a side kick. I had a coach who was brutal with side kicks right here. I was never good with them myself, but if you were on the wall properly (as in not actually leaning on the wall but in a good fighting stance) he'd just side kick you center mass to put you against the wall, then start throwing combos or doing whatever he was gonna do. Even blocking it, it didn't matter, you felt that side kick flatten you against the wall. It hit so much harder just because you had nowhere to go and it just drove all the wind out of your body.

Attack by drawing using the wall to channel movement. Very cool. Gread vid as usual. Mike has such a great grasp (and is so great at explaining) the implicit "conversation" that happens between fighters. Great coaching. The foundation of all fighting is calculating range and bearing. That's the first step in understanding threat, formulating response, etc. If he is on the wall and you are aware (as Mike demonstrates in the video), then you have a far simpler calculation than he does -- that simpler calculation will make you seem "faster" or "smarter" in the same way that you can do ten arithmetic problems faster than you can do ten calculus problems. I agree that its weird the way MMA tactics have sort of homogenized towards a wrestling-centric focus. The idea of stalking a guy for a combination knockout against the wall was much more common ten years ago, I think. I think one of the things that made Jon Jones so phenomenal is that he stalks to to strike and he never stops trying to strike no matter what range or cage position he's at.

Cutting an opponent off involves beating them to the outside and using select strikes to get them to change directions. If cornering from the left, I might hit them with a big lead hook from the orthodox then attempt to cut them off on the lateral shuffle. If cornering from the right, it would be the right hand to get them to change directions and go the other way. You're more so forcing their reaction versus anticipating where they are going. It is the threat of the power shot that gets the opponent to change directions. you can also use straights to get them to retreat backwards. They will eventually be "cut off" and cornered. This is a fundamental technique in boxing, applicable to striking overall.

Hey Mike, great video as always. Since you have a background in law enforcement, would you mind making a video on hand to hand techniques you might use where you have to think about legislation and cameras (where you can't really approach someone and just start throwing fists). Any type of hand/wrist locks or other stuff you'd use in those scenarios?

I would be curious to see how you could drill that spin move Blackie Chan used in your sparring. Seems like it could be a way to quickly get past your opponent when you're against the wall and they're too close.

I think what makes the situation is scary is, that if I have you against the wall, I need to maintain that pressure and not allow you to release any of it, if I want to keep you there. In the open its way different. There is a back and forth going on, but against the wall, there is always pressure and it will either have the pressuring fighter backing off, or there is a collision that is inevitably going to happen and that just not the case with any other situation like that.

The strategy works well on most people, just make sure you really are controlling a non trapfight expert. They (trapfighters) usually don't avoid "bridging" if you chase them. Here you need to be really aware on your distance and make sure the not lose the gap(s) you have. You REALLY don't want get into their space because then its most likely means they chase you from that moment in really high speed and tight space. Their idea is that as soon you have tactile feedback you can hit and react to target feedback much faster than "eye - limb" coordination ever can do. ( it is like wrestling, bu still not yet wrestling) Some "old style" boxing styles has part of thst idea and call it "indexing" your attacks. (Glima has trapfighting as a transition model between wrestling and boxing(fencing)

Lean one way or other and side step in that direction if he's going for a kick. If it's a punch then, lean one way or another to give them the slip and counter with an uppercut and follow with a power kick while they are distracted by the punch.🤔🧐💯

But as a cyclist I've always felt there room to explore some of the accoutrements that come with it. During the riots I saw videos of cops using bikes as barriers. Chain locks for instance.Ever heard of the ParkTool aws-1? That looks useful, parties, strikes etc.

Dustin is very good at this, and I'm wondering if it's because being an orthodox southpaw makes him particularly dangerous when he squares up? If he can generate close to equal power on either side there's no good way to circle out and you end up standing there getting dismantled.

Going forward is sometimes extremely easy if you are brave. :p Once you get close enough its like putting a stick through someone's bike tires but takes practice to burn it into your brain because instinct is to RUN from the power instead of wet blanketing onto it and shutting it down. But if you are demoralized back against the wall can seal your fate.

Surprised I dont see more people sidekick an opponent that is against the wall. I mean they cant back up and dodge it... Its kinda perfect.. And if they deflect it they are opening themselves up to a mean spinning backfist they cant retreat from. After 1 or 2 sidekicks they are going to lower their hands and open themselves to some hooks. Then when they guard high they are going to open themselves to a mean knee to the guts.

Once you decide to keep them on the wall you and enter that mid-engagement range, you have to view it as actively attacking for the entirety of the time you're controlling their movement, not just when you're striking. The shots you take are momentary breaks to punish them for having the audacity to try to not get hit.
