It's amazing how many people think 'Genuine Leather' stamped on something is a sign of quality!

Hi Dave, I just wanted to say thank you for an amazing video. We sell leather care and leather repair products and regularly train our customers. At the start of most trainings, I usually have to explain the different types of leather. I watched this video a year ago and I must admit I draw the exact same diagram every time. It has proven very effective. Job well done and keep up the great work! Best Regards, Ram@Colourlock (London, U.K.)

Great video Dave! More than a year after i got my wallet from you guys (model doesn't seem to be available any longer, Bi-Fold Wallet Small in Tobacco) i still get compliments on it as it's developed some lovely colours through heavy use and exposure out on mine sites here in Australia. I always keep the business card handy on my desk and make sure to tell people about the 100 year warranty which never fails to get a laugh.

is there a difference in comfort? for exaple,, respective to season the leather in cars gets very cold or very hot and is slippery. i guess it is chrome tanned. would veg tan be any different? thanks.

@Saddleback Leather Hi William, Quick question; is it possible to buy "Full Grain Leather" overseas where they don't use barbed wire? or is that over priced and would make everything too damn expensive. -Thanks Dan
@saddlebackleather8 жыл бұрын
Hey Dan, I'm sure there are lots of places where cows roam free of barbed wire. But if you're talking about eliminating all natural markings to the hide, (cuts, bites, fight scars, stretch marks, .etc) you're going to find that everywhere, if it's full grain leather. The darker the leather, the less you're going to see those markings. If a completely clean and uniform look is what you're after, you'll want top grain leather, or something less quality, like genuine leather. I hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any other questions. -William

nice explanation. so where does tooling leather fit into that mix ?
@minerforjob32 Жыл бұрын
Tooling leather is veg tan leather. You can get veg tan as full grain or top grain. Tooling leather is more about the tanning process rather than the cut used
@chrisulfen87759 жыл бұрын
And also, how do you spot a fake "full grain leather"? There's a lot of companies trying to copy the feel and touch of the full grain leather. Kinda hard to spot the real from the fake stuff.

i did buy leather jacked and i dont know hwat kind of leather it is, it says - semi ace pig skin, it sort of looks like brushed leather, the structure is like dryed up mud, i cant tell if its durable or watter repelent or bad quality, it cost me 150 bucks

Can you use the whole hide to make leather products? or are there reasons you wouldn't want to do that?
@YouTubestopsharingmyrealname10 жыл бұрын
I talking about the with the top grain all the way down the the genuine leather.
@timoe11498 жыл бұрын
+Casey Hagist My guess is that the quality is not even, so the genuine part would wear away faster. The whole hide is quite thick as well hence it would not make for a good material because of that; it's not pliable.
@wickedleeloopy21156 жыл бұрын
Genuine leather is fine for small things like handbags & wallets that usually ware out & replaced. But you want top grain for expense items you want to last like jackets & sofa.

Why is full grain comparatively more expensive when it appears that more work is needed to obtain top grain and genuine leather?
@minerforjob32 Жыл бұрын
Because top grain and genuine leather are byproducts of more expensive full grain products. It's the waste, a lot of times it's sold by lb

First impression: Beginning scene, the chalkboard spells "Saddeback" (missing the L) instead of "Saddleback" as it should read, just saying.
@wangyue97549 жыл бұрын
Is that true, by law, we need to put 'Genuine' on the label in order to confirm the content of the material. Just like we need to put faux on the fake leather product? I see some manufacturers use Genuine Front Quarter Horse Hide on the label. So I guess the word 'Genuine' actually doesn't indicate the quality.
@NorthStarLeather8 жыл бұрын
Genuine just means real. If you're using real leather, then it is Genuine leather. He's talking about finished splits- that's the real "industry term" for a suede that's had a finish applied to look like top/full grain leather.

hi, I'm really interested in finding out what animal hide my leather jacket is from along with what grade of leather it is. would I be able to get a hold of you and have you take a look at it please? thanks in advance

Hi Saifullah, that might be difficult if we're just looking at photographs. You might be better served finding a local leathersmith who can see it in person. But we'll gladly take a look. Please email us at ihaveaquestion@saddlebackleather.com Thanks! -William

why does noone in these videos show the actual types of lather so we can see the difference is beyond me, wat does some scratchings on a table show me ?

Fair question, let me explain. The sketch on the chalkboard is a very large, blown up representation of the side of a piece of leather. This makes it easier to understand what the grain, (which is millimeters thick) actually looks like. This video Dave made shows some different types of leather: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2KUqJ-knNWoibs -William

@@timoe1149 The hides are split into two, then the top grain side has its "B" side shaved to reduce it evenly to a nominal 1.2mm thickness. Top grain whether Full grain or corrected is real genuine leather.i
