I am a protestant and say this there is nothing to beat the majesty of a formal procession to start matins or mass. It sets the tone of the service. And a well played. Church organ, surpasses the racket from drums and guitars.
@crice486625 күн бұрын
Absolutely, I'm a Presbyterian director of music and our church in order to stay alive is actually allowing all that racket, no more proper hymns throughout the service....and no formal prayers for the world or members for fear of being sued for HIPA regs for mentioning a persons particular ailment in public. Always wished I was of Catholic linage or at least Episcopalian . On Christmas Eve, I lead our Church service then I go to the bigger city near me and watch a Catholic and Episcopalian one, just for the majesty, which a just God deserves, not dressing in the same attire we'd go out on a date in and for service music , using the same kind of melodies we'd woo a new boy or girlfriend with the synthesizers and drums and tech screens. This pageantry above was simply sublime to put it mildly. Fantastic version of SINE NOMINE...one of the grandest of hymns. Beautiful singing and cathedral.

It's predominantly the congregation you hear singing, not the choir!
@Salmagundiii11 ай бұрын
@@SaintMarksChurchPhiladelphiaYou've taught them to sing? What did you do, send them all to a parish church in the UK for a year!? In all seriousness though, this is such a major difference 'across the pond'. At least until recently, students were taught to sing, and usually sing parts, in UK primary schools. Whether 'public' or state. The same is obviously not true in the states. It does sound like the congregation is singing - so whatever you've done to encourage it, keep going! IIRC I first heard about this church around 2004 when I met someone at the Wanamaker Organ Day. He might have been the erstwhile organist. In any case he told me of a very high church Episcopalian church in Philly with a large AS pipe organ. Had to be this one ;-). Glad I can finally visit, virtually at least.

I'd love to visit this church. The music selections are spot on and the organist is heavenly. It just seems like 'The Church'. A visit there is definitely on my bucket list.
@jonkopf40863 ай бұрын
@@gregorymiller2977 The Episcopal Church has some of the greatest hymns. The organist in this church does them justice with clear crisp renditions. Music in the middle ages often helped spread The Word of God as many were illiterate. Together with the many symbols placed throughout the service, it helped tell the story of Christianity. I think we should try it again today as many have become “illiterate” to The Word of God.

One of my favorite hymns, so long as the organ has an outrageous 16' reed. A rattling posaune will do. An extra 32' reed is also nice. Either way, three of the verses should be reed heavy, and the pedal has to march steadily throughout. Oh my, how I do miss playing. If anyone out there knows the organist, please give her a high five from an old, retired organist.

It sounds as though your people on the worship team are also using those “7-11” type of of church music. Mine and my husband and I are members of a Baptist church that are using those redundant “7-11” songs. Thanks to Hillsong Church from Australia! That is supposedly which is same “model” church influencing many churches around the globe by implementing those “7-11” songs in possibly all churches irregardless of denominational preferences.

The service was designed for an illiterate population of the middle ages. It was very important that the Gospel was told using all 5 senses like an angelic play. Some Churches have diminished the message by eliminating parts of the delivery. I personally like all the bells and whistles and as an alter boy the sounds of the Eucharist gave me goosebumps.

@SaintMarksChurchPhiladelphia Жыл бұрын
It's not virtually empty. There were about 100 people there. But this is a Wednesday evening service. How many churches do you know that are full on Wednesday evenings? (Or even Sundays, for that matter.)
@Rogerthatidea11 ай бұрын
@@SaintMarksChurchPhiladelphia We do not have services on Wednesday evening, but Sundays are packed, requiring multiple times and venues. In our area the Catholic diocese is reducing the number of parishes from 130 to 35. I am not RC but am saddened by the decline. I love the grand cathedrals but get sad at seeing great churches virtually empty. A few years ago I was in St Stephan’s in Vienna, and only 50 worshippers were there for Sunday mass.
