Thanks for posting this clip. I remember watching this film on the plane that carried me home from Vietnam in July 1971. It was at that time that I fell in love with the song (and still am) and of course it was the occasion that facilitated "For All We Know" to leave such a deep impression.

Hey - good work for Griffin / Royer - they were so overshadowed by one we all know and love but it is so nice to see that they finally, through it all - all the seventies tension they were unfortunately going thru - like 'standing on a hill in a mountain of dreams, It wasn't as hard as it seemed' (robert plant) RIP James Griffin. GREAT JOB! Didn't know that one was YOURS! best to Rob Royer where ever you may be - Keep ROCKIN!' you got your Number ONE after all ! ! !

@@triciajohansen7124 OH! LOL!! I’m sorry. Ms. Leachman is wearing a mantilla, an extremely fancy one, too, with gold embroidery to match her dress. All Roman Catholic women, until about 1970 or thereabouts, had to wear something on their heads! In school, if we girls didn’t have our mantilla or chapel cap, we’d pin a KLEENEX on top of our heads. Even a barrette was claimed to be a “covering” by a desperate girl. Those were the days.... Many women are actually going back to wearing a lace mantilla. I may decide to do this, too. Happy Monday, Tricia, stay safe!💖

Ha! I’m old enough to remember that “shacking up” (as my parents called it) was not considered wholesome in 1970. The groom in this scene wanted to back out of the wedding because he thought it was hypocritical considering they’d already been living together for a year and a half.

The song didn't win the Oscar because of the Carpenters, the Oscar was given only to the songwriters who wrote for the film, and in the film, that original version was sung by Larry Meredith.

My favorite wedding scene ever on film. With no voicing other than the song, it feels dreamlike, which is what my own wedding feels like nearly four decades later. Sadly today would have been my 37th Anniversary but she left me (by choice) 22 years ago. So I write through a film of tears. Oh well! BTW, one part that many will miss is the cute little moment thrown in where Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller blow a silent kiss to each other: In the film they are romantically involved with other partners, but of course in real life they were happily married to each other until she passed away in 2015. Sweet.

Thanks for posting. I've loved this song since the first time I heard it on an MGM compilation cd. It's good to know how Carpenters were moved to hear this song watching the scenes. BTW,I think this is a movie version but the cd version has tolling bell-like sounds at its end, which makes me think this one is more appropriate than any other version.

Someone mention Bread in the comment sections Robb Royer who co-wrote this song with Arthur James (Jimmy Griffin) and Fred Karlin. Robb Royer and Jimmy Griffin formed Bread with David Gates and they used Jim Gordon as a session drummer. Jimmy Griffin had to use the pseudonym (Arthur James) because he was under contract with Bread and Electra Records. Robb Royer stayed with Bread from 1968-1970. I think with the success of this song Robb was content with just writing songs instead of traveling with a band. In 1969 Mike Botts joined the group to play drums and percussion and they brought in Larry Knechtel to play bass, guitars, and keyboards. Jimmy Griffin died January 2005 of cancer and Mike Botts died in December of 2005 also of cancer. Larry Knechtel died of an heart attack in August 2009.

So much history in this Movie. Bea Arthur would later work with Rue McClanahan on Maude & The Golden Girls. Rue would later work with Bonnie Bedelia in Sordid Lives with Olivia Newton-John. Cloris Leachman would later win multiple emmy awards whose Son Morgan would later play Dylan Lewis on Guiding Light and co-incidentally Rue played Caroline an evil Housekeeper on it's sister Show Another World and Olivia would win an Emmy Award for Writing A Love Song for Lily & Holden on another Proctor & Gamble Show Another World. Rue had a recurring role as Cory's Grandmother on Boy Meets World whose TV Father played Burt on Another World. Cory's Brother played by Ben Savage is Fred Savage who played Kevin Arnold on The Wonder Years who had so many up and coming actors. John Corbett (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), Andrew Shue (Melrose Place), David Schwimmer (Friends) and Bobbie Eakes (The Bold & The Beautiful, All My Children). Bobbie also did The Web Movie The Grove.

We all know the famous versions by Karen Carpenter and Shirley Bassey. But I always knew it came from a film, and never understood how this song could beat its fellow Oscar nominees (for Best Original Song) who were established composers--albeit they won previously for Broadway style music. So in 1970, this pop song's win was a benchmark. Hearing it now captures my first aching poignancy by the Carpenters version decades ago, but had long been jaded through years of AM Radio's overplaying.

Larry Meredith's simple, sincere vocals for "For All We Know" was a nice break from some of the crazy, frantic bantering between the characters in the movie. Besides the great melody and lyrics, it was the Carpenters' version in which Karen's extraordinary vocals and her brother Richard's fluid arrangement of the music that made the song earn the Oscar. BTW, Fred Karlin composed the also-great song Come Saturday Morning, performed by the Sandpipers, for the 1969 movie The Sterile Cuckoo.

I already noted that Larry Meredith sang a good original version of the song in the movie. The Carpenters' version charted as a hit single & was most closely identified as one of their signature tunes even though many other artists have also recorded it. At the Oscars, Petula Clark performed the song-neither she nor the Carpenters were in the original movie-but upon winning, Fred Karlin made a special point to thank Richard & Karen for their moving interpretation of the song, not Larry Meredith.
