I am so glad that I found this. I am 68. I was in TV film for 36 years and then freelanced. I am not a business person and PS I work in health care now. It was ok for the first couple of years and now I hate it. I do video work very much on the side. I have done a few documentaries and my wife and I do a vlog called Maria & Marc's Vlog. We are up to 21 episodes. I try to be as pro as possible. I use my I phone Pro Max 13 with blackmagic app and I just jumped to DJI wireless. We keep it short and try to be amusing. We don't have many views but it keeps my chops up. I have been thinking of doing a weekly show but trying to come up with an idea . . . that's the hard part!!

I have so much admiration for you starting up a channel. I’ve considered so many different things I’m interested in trying but I always stay in this weird inexplicable state of paralysis. I’m terrified to start anything because I find it easier staying frustrated and WANTING to start something than actually trying something and failing. It’s dumb reasoning but somehow I always feel there’s this strange sense of hope in NOT TRYING than trying and FAILING. I think: If I try a new endeavor and I fail, THEN WHAT? If I fail then I’ve lost my last hope. You’re right though. Everyone should just start something. I’m not sure what has kept me stuck for so long.

Inspirational stuff, great video. A little over 40 here. Back in 2010 I started a KZbin channel which I maintained for a couple of years. Got to about 220 subs. I've been thinking about restarting KZbin as it's the one hobby I regret letting go of. Big thing for me was actually being on camera & talking. Enjoyed every other aspect (project conception/planning/editing, etc...) I think with age will hopefully come a bit more confidence. KZbin does feel like a different ballgame now. Felt a bit more guerilla and fringe back then. If I restart I'd be basically making the same type of content (I live in Asia and made videos about life here). I wonder though if it'd be worth using the same account or starting a new one. Most of those subscribers I had are likely gone at this point.

I started this channel this year, at 50, by doing just what you described - turn the phone cam on and record, and see what you end up with :) If you're not happy do it again, but try to improve one thing your not happy with, then repeat, and repeat again :) I took it one step further and started documenting *how* I'm building the stuff I need to shoot pictures and videos for my quad skate shop, and put that on my channel, and *boof*, 6 months later I'm at 400+ subs and 1200 watch time hours. Having no clue what I was doing every video I just looked through it, found one thing to improve, and made the next one while publishing the previous - so it does work to just *do* it, and not care about the consequences, cause there *are* no real consequences, so it's all just good fun :D

It's kind of like several years ago when I was SANTA for 5 years. If I can't convince myself FIRST, I'm not even going to try to convince little kids that I AM Santa. I've had lots of practice with working SOLO like I have for quite some time now. Not being a perfectionist, but even for doing my own pictures, I became best friends with the camera's 10 second timer and race to get the shot before WOOPS no that one won't work.......wasn't ready. I'd end up with like 10 shots and all the back and forth with take the pose, go check the shot, take the pose, go check the shot. I got so good, many of the shots I took were magazine quality. If your views on older videos goes up quite a bit, it's because I've went back to STUDY or refresh what I've picked up from YOU.

While my growth has been steady... it's been slow steady. My question is .... how do you direct your niché direction rather than the viewers? Especially when the content they like isn't always your favorite to produce. I like showing the backroads of the midwest but the product reviews I do get the most view time by far. There are lots of off-road overland product reviewers out there and I don't necessarily want to be another one. I don't mind doing them but I don't always feel like I'm the most knowlegable about that specific product. Since I don't get out and "overland" that much in a given year I don't want to be perceived as disingenuous.
@KevinKolbe5 ай бұрын
Good question. Serving and helping an audience is great. You also have to want to do it, I think, more than an audience wants it. I read every comment and have gotten a TON of great ideas from comments. Some have become videos. A lot haven't. Doesn't mean the question was bad, just meant it didn't fit the direction I was going. It's good to know what people need but be careful about that being the only decider.

I have an iPhone X and I also have the lumafusion app (Apparently this is 3 questions) How do I import decent music like epidemic into an editing app like Lumafusion or some other easy editing app (that I’m not yet even aware of)

I would move your videos and pics to a hard drive or at least cloud storage to have a back-up.

I think your video done with an iPhone looks pretty good. I am one of those that is scared to get started..mostly because I am pretty technologically challenged 😮.What I’m going to start doing however is just slowly start teaching myself..baby steps.I don’t have the first clue how to make a video or create a KZbin channel but in baby steps I can learn.I am 52 and feel it’s time to stop letting fear get in my way.For taping something like what you did ..an iPhone is just fine.Although I don’t know how to make a video using my phone ether ..or at least one that looks decent 😬. Did you use any gadgets or anything with your phone or video tweaking/making apps or anything? I am enjoying your videos very much.Love how you keep them no fuss and muss and down to earth.

I edit in Final Cut Pro which does give me the option of making my audio stand out and other things. Your phone is good enough to start creating.

Kevin ... glad to find your channel ... substantive and "real" ... trying to get started her ... question ... using your iPhone in this video ... are you recording on the "selfie" side of the screen or using the camera on the back of the phone? ... SUBSCRIBED!! ... thank you!!

Thank you. Re: the phone. I'm using the front facing camera, the selfie camera. I only use the rear camera if I'm shooting footage I'm not in OR can easily see it like if it's mirrored to another computer.

Hi Kevin, Thanks for your videos. I’m really looking forward to starting my own KZbin channel at 56 years old and I have been doing research, getting a couple of equipment essentials and writing scripts. I understand that I need a new Google Business account, a website for newsletters and such, even the legalities and monetization and revenue streams. My biggest fear is editing. I have watched tutorials but they assume that I know something when I actually know nothing. I want to use the simplest, most intuitive software and have step by step instructions. I want to review all of the necessary features and the thrills (eventually). What do you recommend? Thank you!😊

If you're new to video and editing, on a Mac use iMovie. Fairly easy to use and does a lot too. Another option, don't edit. Hit record and upload it.

I watched a video from a much younger youtuber (I’m 59) and she said that we shouldn’t just start. That we should have an end in mind otherwise it will mess everything up for us. How’s my journey so far? It’s slow going. Spending way too much time learning software and having set backs. I don’t want to spend my entire days off work on the phone or computer making videos.
@KevinKolbe5 ай бұрын
I don't have the context of that creators thoughts, but based on what you shared, I don't agree. Sometimes its better to start and figure it out. Always having an end in mind can lead to never doing anything.

@@KevinKolbe agreed. It’s like a huge road block!! And we have enough of those LOL. Thanks for your input and time.

Which program do you recommend to create the video??? Where to start? With undertitles, audios? Just your phone? I do not know where to start.

To start, use what you've got. Ain't nothing wrong with your phone.

My problem is my computer is broken and I can’t decide what to buy. Any recommendations on which Mac is best configuration . Currently have 16” macbook pro(with ‘d’ key not working) and a 2014 mac air. Both give me issues when trying to edit. I’m considering the mac mini but I don’t have a monitor, etc.
@KevinKolbeАй бұрын
Depends on your budget and your needs. You might stick with a Mac laptop since it has everything you need to create.

If anyone is worried about what people they know will think, then don't tell them. If they can find you on youtube, then most likely many others have found you first and that is a good thing.

Awesome video to the Point Kevin,😊👍👍 direct and no fluff. I have my own art channel @BluCranium and I definitely think I wana make another channel like what your doing just to get comfortable talking to the camera, my wife and kids say I can ramble on lol 🤣 but I guess Vloging like this raw not any editing is what people seem to crave from the super edited stuff.

I’ve definitely fallen into the procrastination/gear/fear trap. I have a shotgun mic but I just discovered it doesn’t work - great! A new excuse to kick the can down the road! Seriously though, everyone says audio matters more than video so what should I do? Use AirPods as a mic?
@KevinKolbe5 ай бұрын
I do believe audio is more important than video. People may put up with crap looking video but if they can't hear you, it's different. Also doesn't mean you have to spend a ton either. I haven't tried AirPods but if they've got a mic, give it a shot. Don't let that stop you!

@@KevinKolbe Thanks! I’ll give it a try! Another question, if I want to have multiple channels, do I need to set them up using different email accounts? Thank you so much for your inspiring content!

Good question. One email is all you need which makes it so simple. Just don't share that email with the world since it will be connected to your channel(s).

Okay. So I got some videos on my iphone/camera.... Now what? My phone is filled up! 😳😲How do I get it all off? Where do I put it now? How do I get it from my phone to YT? What do I do with the videos after they are up on YT? Do delete them from my phone? Filing system...? Storage Disk? Or put them into the Trash Icon and send them off into the great unknown....?🚀 Thanks! I really want to do this. I need to film my craft/art desk space but I can't see if I'm in my camera's frame unless i have a second screen/camera connected to my phone/camera that shows me what my camera is recording... and then there is zooming in and out without a major learning curve... got anything simple ans easy in that arena? 🤔😏😊
