I liked this game quite a bit and praised the combat. If you think I'm hating on the game, I don't know what to tell you. I can critique certain elements of your favorite game and still love the game overall. If I didn't have ANY negatives at all you guys would think I'm being too easy on games

The game is great. Yes it has flaws, but it honestly does not even match up with the positives that this game has. They just need to have dedicated servers, fix the bleed damage, and that's pretty much it. The combat is unique and something fresh. The whole 2v1, 3v1 thing solely depends on your skill because I've won a lot of those, and even survived a lot of 4v1s. So on that matter gameranx, Git Gud. Other than that, it's a solid ass game. I recommend everyone who's complaining to try the game out at least, and just give it back if you don't like it. That's that.

Gear only affects Dominion and Elimination, and it's not an OP kind of gear system either, so I still don't see the problem there anyways. Don't worry bout it. Just git gud and no more complaints

My most satisfying moment during the beta was when I held a point and was against 3 fuckers, they banged me and then I got the revenge, I parried the first one so he fell then I grabbed the second one threw him away from the tower, parried the third one and executed him, the first one ran away after this. Never felt this badass before.

I refuse to use the keyboard, the controller feels so much better. Although, the trade off is that your reacting with your thumbs and not your arm, which is slightly slower and gets me killed more often. Would I go to keyboard then? Hell no.

Guys. Look at Rainbow Six Siege, it has no campaign with literally one game mode and is still a thriving game. Overwatch has no campaign and is really thriving right now, already with several events, updates, added content..etc. What is the difference with this game? It's basically going to head the same route as Rainbow Six and Overwatch mark my words. The argument that it gets repetitive and having a decent story to not buy the game is really weak. Majority of big games nowadays focus on MULTILAYER. CoD has done it for years and is still doing it.

epicsoul 1337 Rainbow Six has hostage or bomb. I don't count that other terrorist hunt game mode because that isn't the focus of the game nor does anyone play it. Essentially R6S has ONE mode because the user is only given one option to choose from when wanting to play online. Plus, it's not like we get to choose whether or not we want to play Hostage or Bomb.

Gotta say, this is the first review I've completely disagreed with. Me and all my friends love the hell out of this game. A lot. It's so much fun for all the reasons Jake didn't like it. Fighting groups are bad, so don't travel alone because numbers are power. If you can still take opponents in groups, you're a good player. But what's awesome is that sometimes people WILL watch and let you 1 v 1 another player. Seeing your whole team get destroyed in elimination an then having the whole enemy team take you on one at a time out of respect was one of the coolest moments I had in the game. All of the modes fit every mood you're in with how much variety their is, and none of the classes are broken (some just perfectly counter the other). I think this just isn't Jake's kind of game and that's about it (and nothing is wrong with that). Maybe, to the person reading this, this isn't your game either. But I would still 100% recommend you to buy it. If you want to wait a bit for a price drop or something, then ok. But I would not pass For Honor up. It's a good game. ...yeah, the campaign is a breeze though. That being said, it's cool factor was pretty damn high. This is all just my opinion though.

Playing against an honorable player in this game makes for the most intense, fun, brutal, fast-paced and tactical fights you will ever experience in a videogame. Every hit you give and receive will feel deserved, and combos, even if you're the one being killed by it, will feel exhilarating... that being said, those kinds of fights are rare. Most people will spam combos and tactics that the majority of the community doesn't know how to counter yet. In 2v2's and 4v4's, players will constantly gang up on one player, or run away if they are losing (mostly Samurai do these). For Honor is an example of a great game but a terrible community, which is ironic considering the title. Either Ubisoft needs to vigilantly stamp out these cheesy tactics, or the community needs to stop spamming them, both of which are actually somewhat likely. I was exited for this game and still am. I haven't bought it yet, but I'm checking up on it on a weekly basis. Please don't buy this game blindly, but don't brush it away and forget about it either.

I am debating whether to buy For Honor when it comes down in price (15 EUR or 18 dollars). In which case, the single player needs to be good as I will have already missed the multiplayer hype train and the single player is pretty much all I'll be playing it for. Worth it? Jake, you forgot to mention that there will be FREE updates to the game every three months that add a plethora of content, kinda like what Rainbow Siege 6 did. I think this will help the longevity of the game. The combat is never BS at times, only certain classes (peacekeeper *cough* *cough*) seem BS but once you learn their weaknesses and what classes are particularly strong against them, they are easy to beat. The campaign is a slur though but the focus of this game is online competitive gameplay, and a great progression system similar to Overwatch's. Just my 2 cents

I feel like ,in a way, you're not supposed to be able to defeat 3 different guys at once. the realistic part gets thrown in there. I think the game tries pushing you to avoid those situations on a realistic stand point. I also don't get why you said the campaign was bad. I actually loved it. The whole chapter thing and playing as basically everyone really gets you into the game. And I feel like the whole exploiting the combat thing is something only really shitty players would do. I also think that those type of players don't play for honor.

We will probably see OP characters get nerfed, but from experience with Ubisoft games I predict it will either take too long, or they'll nerf the character too much, or both (a la blackbeard). The peacekeeper got a nerf when the full game launched, but it was arguably too much. Yes, the triple stab was a bit too strong, but now there's no reason to use it over a heavy attack as the heavy does more and does it instantly. It's not gamebreaking at the moment I just hope it doesn't happen to too many other characters

Jesus christ, the comment section is full of fanboys, haters, downers, hypers, and overall retards. Look, I played the beta and was looking forward to this game ever since it got announced at E3. Overtime my 'hype' got dwindled and I began to feel spectacle of how good it would be. I played the beta and I have to say; the game is fun as fuck. However, that is one of my only pros of the game (for me). I've enjoyed games like M&B, Chivalry, WotR, etc. and so have many other steam users interested in that type of content. And at this point, For Honor barely even compares to those games, and that showed in the beta steam reviews. (44% positive) The people on console will love this game though, they don't have games like these and have been wanting them for awhile. Now to my issues with the game after I have stated the overall pc opinion and my background. The servers are shit, the combat is meh, and the content is less then meh. Servers for most people have had a tendency to kick people, disconnect, or downright not let you play. The devs of this game call the combat innovative and such, however I cannot disagree with them more. There are three directions of attacking and blocking that give you a red flashing indicator and more then .8-1.5 seconds to respond to that. How is that challenging? The human average response time is .25 seconds. I like to compare this to Mount and Blade; 4 directions, no indicators, and about .4-1 second of response time varying on the weapon. "The break mechanic is innovative." No, M&B has kicking, Chivalry has 'breaking', and WotR has shield bashes. The "revenge" mechanic is complete bullshit imo. You can spend a full 3 minutes fighting someone just to get them down to 2% of their health with confidence that you are going to win and BAM. They pop the revenge and you're dead. What? With other little things such as animation glitches, cheesy tactics, and slightly overpowered (not being nerfed/changed since Alpha) characters, it really makes the overall combat system very icky. The content in this game is fairly low considering they decided to do characters instead of classes like Rainbow Six: Siege did aswell. There are 3 maps for one mode. Damn that's worse then Overwatch. "Oh but there will be free content." Yes, after you paid $60-100 and the game is already dead. Speaking of which... $100 for the full game.. WTF? Will I buy this game? No. Will I buy this game when it's on sale for $20-30 in a few months? Possibly. 4.5/10

You probably won't ever read this but if you do, let me tell you this: the game can feel cheesy if you're just starting out, didn't play it enough or you're simply bad and can't grasp the game's mechanics. Is throwing people off ledges cheap? Definitely, is it cheesy or broken? Absolutely not, you just need to be aware of your surroundings, your skill in this game determines everything, if you are really really good in this game you will not lose a single fight. The game is actually very, very well made in terms of combat and is superb in terms of how competitive it is.

The environment is a core mechanic in this game. I love how I can use footwork to force the enemy assassin into a corner so they can't dodge teleport.That being said though, some maps are just skinny bridges that force both players to spam the guard block button til someone falls off the edge. I love the use of walls in this game but the cliffs and pitfalls are a bit too common.

Great game... Honestly it wasn't even on my radar, especially with Horizon Zero Dawn coming up... But, then I started watching more and more videos on it, and I was sold. I didn't play the Beta, I just jumped right in on day one, and I love it. The gameplay is thrilling and the battle mechanics are incredibly unique. Shodaximus the game has throwing spam issues. you cant deny that unless you are the 1 using them. you are allowed to throw 3 weapons for some characters. i understand that you unlock them through the battle but you can get them really quick right after they are used. plus if the whole team is throwing stuff(which i seen). it drains the game of its fun. the fastest guy in the game runs from you and shoots 2 arrows. you are dead... gay. if that doesnt kill you, he's got a throwing star... gay. if that doesnt get you, his friends got them, too... gay. that's 3 gays. i guess we got to tolerate the gays.

Crash Schwarzenegger in short, peer to peer means no servers. There's a direct internet connection to all "peers" (players). That wouldn't normally be a problem, but the peer to peer design in this game was done horably touchy. Slightest bit of lag causes instant pauses and disconnects for little to no reason.

If you get thrown of the ledge, that's because you put yourself in that situation. Feels like this game has been misconceived as some kind of Action-RPG Hack&slash, cuz' this is definitely a competetive fighting game very similiar to games like Tekken, just with a very different spin. I've also observed a very distinct disparity in the level of enjoyment based on how much they usually play/enjoy said games (Tekken and Soul Calibur in our case) around my friends.

I wouldn't specifically say it plays like Tekken, but it definitely feels somewhat like a fighting game with each of the classes playing differently with their own movesets and with spacing and timing being an important aspect to consider. I'd say though that most footage I saw before playing in the betas didn't give me that impression either with Dominion being their main game mode to show off which is by far the least exemplar of the fighting game parallels.

I took down 3 players simultaneously twice yesterday in dominion. on the beta my friend killed 4 players by himself in death match for the win. just have to know how to use revenge mode and block multiple opponents. you will still most likely lose when outnumbered but no shit you're outnumbered. in battlefield or cod if you walk into a room full of people by yourself you may get a kill or two but chances are you're dead. overall this is a great game and I love it. yes it can be cheesed with characters like orochi or peacekeeper but so what its a game. get better at it or don't play lol.

I went ahead and bought it just for the change of pace. There are so many shooters out there that I think it's a breath of fresh air to see a company try something a bit different. Of course, because it's different, there are going to be a lot of drawbacks. At this point, it's still an experiment. That's why people tend to make shooters...there's already a solid foundation to build on. There isn't quite a substantial backlog of games like this to borrow from, so things are going to be a little shakier in terms of gameplay mechanics. If it gets a good following, I'm sure they'll continue to refine it. If not...well, I bought it. I really don't want another Battleborn on my hands. :/

Actually- Peer to peer is normally faster than client-server-client connections, since the server is left out. As an example: A user sends a package to the server (takes time X), the server sends it to the next user (takes time Y). So the total elapsed time for one datapackage is X + Y. In peer to peer, the data packages are directly shared with all the players on the map. This means, that sharing data takes longer, since it is transmitted to more than one person, if there are more BUT if it is just one on one the transmission time is even faster, since you only have the time it takes for the client to send data (see above, only X), since the server is not there. (It should also be noted, that 4 or even 6 players on a map should not be slower than a client-server-client connection) *BUT* you guys use the wrong term anyway. This game is not even Peer to peer, it is based on client-servers. Peer to peer is, when people change data packets with each other, and i mean everyone on the map and equally. Client-based-servers or Client hosting makes one guy host, while the others transmit information over the host and not directly to other players. This would basically mean, that one user (and all other users in the session) send their packages to the host, who functions as the server. The host, then in return, has to apply all these packages to his session and send the updated packages back to the users. This however is simplified for the host, since in current times, every user runs a simulation of the other users to predict their movements, which reduces side effects like the delay. If the latency is huge, this is however prone to rubber-banding, since the host is dominant and can reset stuff like position of the player. So yeah. Everyone is using the wrong term and because it has been done so long the developers now just go with it and say themselves, that client-based hosting is peer to peer, even though, by definition, it's not. There is a lot more stuff to discuss on this matter and what exactly peer to peer is in detail but i'll leave that out for now. Dark souls has the same problem. Phantoms and messages of other players are peer to peer based and there are a maximum of 20 players in a lobby at each time, sharing information. However, if you actually invade the world of a player, this player becomes a host and thus the host of a client based server. Basically- as soon as there is a host, it is strictly speaking no longer a peer to peer connection, even if only 2 people are involved. *Peer to peer connections don't have a host* Don't believe me? Check wikipedia. Everyone is using the wrong word.

I disagree with the his feelings on the campaign. Yeah it's short and simple and linear, but for what it is it's great. The voice acting isn't award-winning but it conveys the feelings they were going for. And the gameplay is challenging and forces you to learn the controls a bit, at least when played on hard, without being too punishing

First time viewer here! I personally fall in to the category of those who are already die-hard for this game. For me, the combat is about class knowledge mainly, as every class handles differently and takes a few games to figure out their niches. The depth in this game goes so far as to give each individual class it's own weight, speed... like the handling for a car if you will. In addition to class knowledge timing, rhythm, instincts, and just a little bit of luck are what will win you fights. The customization is just deep enough to keep people coming back for more, especially if one takes advantage of what the Ubisoft club offers in regards to visual customization (most items won't contain combat buffs, I think). The game spreads out finding loot just long enough between finds that it feels like an accomplishment when that new pommel or blade is found with the perfect buff. The material breakdown system is simple enough for new players to figure out quickly, making the playing field a bit more even where gear is concerned. Where the game does lack flaws are in its Revenge system, it's BOT level in matchmade multiplayer games, and most importantly the balancing of classes. While the last point speaks for itself, Revenge and BOT strength, which do go hand in hand, are broken. Revenge mode gives heroes a half overshield, knocks the other players away from them when beginning, and grants a damage buff. Where this goes hand in hand with bots is that in public PVAI games bots will fight one on one with me and barely beat me because they earn revenge mode faster than a human player. Combo spamming will always be a thing in multiplayer games, but hero balancing should be coming in patches soon. Game gets a 4 out of 5 stars from me, Gameranx. Thanks!

Those facets you described are key components of most any melee combat game. I'm just asking the relevance of these specific things...I feel that's the equivalent of saying "In Call of Duty you can shoot prokjectiles and some weapons fire faster than others, what depth."

Here is why speed matters 1) Dodging, each character hits and dodges to different speeds and distances, so knowing the speed of your enemy attacks helps to know when to dodge and when to block 2) Parrying, again, timed parries are vital, allowing a counter attack, knowing the timing of an attack allows you to counter most heavy and some light attacks to get a nice hit or even win the game with a throw into the environment. 3) Feinting, character speed effects the ability to feint effectively, feinting is key at higher levels because the enemy knows your attacks, so they will always parry, you need to fake them out with a parry, but fast enemies will often score a light attack to punish a parry, 4) actual sprinting speed, often you will need to RUN AWAY, if you are a heavy class, knowing that you cannot out run the assassins should factor into whether you decide to fight them at any given time these things are all based on speed as well as other things. This game is deep, rich, complex and rewarding. I love competitive gameplay, and this game is truly competitive and skill based, skill meaning experience, character knowledge, reaction time, creativity, environmental awareness (up against a character you are weak against use the environment against them)

IvyWoodStudios Where did he say that speed doesn't matter? He merely stated that a difference in speed f certain weapons/characters is a must have in every fughting game. And I completely agree with him. For Honour is a dumbed down fighting game which is meant to be more open to casual players than other games of the same genre, because as we all know, fighting games aren't particularly successful when compared to other games' sales. The introduction of indicators and so very few directions/ comboes made it way too easy for me to be interested in, and most of its community, which us probably rather new to the genre, made me even more so.

IvyWoodStudios Your response shows a lack of understanding. I'm saying a slight change in speed does not greatly increase complexity IN THE SYSTEM...of course it adds a lot of nuance from the player's perspective. My point is it's a very cheap and simple way to simulate nuance and difficulty. I'd argue things like lock-on, animations locks (you're stuck during most animations.)...the 'combat mode' (movement slows once you're locked onto a target.) and the sheer length of animations removes a lot of the nuance of combat...and taking control away from the player. Also the fact animations don't perfectly correlate with striking direction. I think in a true 'skilled based' experience a player should have both as much control of their character as absolutely often as possible. M&B being a nice comparison. in a lot of ways the combat appears similar to AC with some obvious differences.

MeoWHamster You partially misunderstood me, what I meant is the use of speed is a common feature in games to simulate nuance and difficulty. From Dark souls to Call of Duty. In a fighting games (and certain action games.) it's further emphasized because of the surrounding mechanics like timed blocked and counters. I don't compare For Honor to fighting games though, I compare it generally to action games or RPGs. I personally prefer the combat in Dishonored despite it's simplicity in mechanics simply because of the sheer speed, I think a compromise between speed and complexity needs to be made. I'm definitely looking forward to Kingdom Come: Deliverance more than For Honor...and ironically most of the things I dislike about KC:D are features of For Honor...like the Lock on and slow movement in combat (that forces you to use things like dodging.) I prefer movement, striking, distance and rhythm to be far more organic and dynamic.

bought the game and I do see a lot of people cheesing fights and kinda goes against the name for honor more accurately it should have been retitled as for dbags. it has its fun parts when someone finally isn't trying to use spikes or ledges even running the fights are drawn out and exciting my group plays by a honor code during fights and keeping it a 1v1 during the brawl and elimination gameplay it truly lets you feel good about duking it out on a fair playing field. if I had to rate it I'd split it into 3 categories 8/10 for combat . community 3/10 and visually 10/10

Fair play? everything is fair. counter guard break. get good at it. When you see spikes nearby know your enemy will go for a guardbreak. counter it and hit them. throw them into the spikes. it's not like you can't do anything about it.

@Nonuv Urbreeznus I've tried to utilize the counter guard-break, but, in my experience, it's one of those things that are either inconsistent or overly reliant on good connection. @vape knight Generally, I just rely on interrupting with an attack/guard-break of my own or avoiding environmental hazards, but some Domination objectives and duel/brawl locations do shoe-horn you into those positions. I read about an update comin' in mentioning that they're going to take a look at a few classes and systems in the game, so (predictably, with a guy like Jason Vanenburgh providing oversight) Ubisoft's at least paying attention to balance. Just gotta give it a week.

I do not regret buying the game, though I did wait almost a year after the game came out. There have been a lot of improvements, but no game is perfect. It definitely helps to be part of a community because teamwork is vital to winning online games like dominion.

Honestly if you dont like fighting games then this isn't really going to appeal to you . There is , as stated in the video, a learning curve. Easy to learn but enough depth that it could take to master ( learn combos, matchups, etc. ) . The game is not hack n slash like dynasty warriors.

The only problem (although it's quite impossible that devs haven't tested this or at least theorized about it) I see with it is that frame data is a bit off. Every move is reactable, unlike in niche fighting games where you can have 3f jabs and stuff. Here, they went populistic, which I actually like - when it's the case of hard to master. But, I am wondering if skill ceiling wouldn't prove to be too low for highly skilled players. The point in fighting games is that you can't react to probably more than half things, where footsies and mind games begin, game plan etc. Here, I have fears about people simply turtling and reacting to everything.

Ubi has the power to make slight changes to gameplay, if reactive gameplay is the style that emerges and dominates without a clear option to overcome. Having played Evolve at length, I too worry about a low skill ceiling and how much of an effect lag has on gameplay. P2P, like Evolve, so if I'm paired with a 500 ping player, am I handicapped or are they boosted? What mechanisms are in place to help in that endeavor, that are fair to bother players OR better yet, what options do I have to avoid high pings entirely without taking any negative hits to rep/score/whatever it's called. I'm tired of AAA titles not having any mechanisms for high ping avoidance yet they'll punish the players who disconnect because they don't want to play vs a high ping player.

I actually think ping won't be much of a problem. At least from experience. Not a lot of people report ping problems. Stability, network, hosts leaving and games reinstancing etc. - yes. But ping, lag, not so much. Probably the system somehow equalizes all the participants to some reasonable level. They can make changes and tweak things regarding gameplay, but I am wondering what percentage of potential problem is fundamentally hard to change. For example, the fastest attack in the game is comparably very slow, when we look at standard fighting games. I'd say it's slower than the slowest attack in some random fighting game representative. So, if they decide to tweak things and make some stuff unreactable, for example, they would have to do a huge change. It's not like "blanka has 4f kick, so we should tone it down to 5f", it's more like putting a 25f move to 5f:) Which would make the game hilarious. Now, perhaps they could do other things. But all nuances in For Honor seem to be based in timing, and timing can be exercised to stupendous levels. Even at minimum window, people will simply form muscle memory to still execute tough moves.

Long post. :) It's not much of a problem now near post-release, when there a high number of players to be paired with. However, if suddenly you (generalization) log on tomorrow and there's 1000 players to be matched with, and 999 are in games and that 1 available player is half way around the world, that's who you get unless they specifically have restrictions to prevent that, in which case you have a bad gamer experience because you're sitting in a lobby for ages waiting for a game. Then it becomes a huge problem, and is a major detractor from P2P networked games - As long as there a high number of people playing, lag being a potential factor in games is remote because you'll never be paired with a user that far away. In a game with dedicated servers, some form of netcode is typically enforced to keep players who are varying distances away from the server in sync by delaying hit registration packet communication (and more, but only this one matters) to some degree and using lag interpolation to smooth out avatar animation, just so it looks nice and not laggy. Some games excel at this, some are horrible, but it's hard to get a decent feel for it until the game has been out a while and gamers start making comments. Counter-Strike for example, or anything else on the Source engine, handles this stuff pathetically. If it were me, knowing I may need to balance attack/defense actions, I'd have coded the game appropriately so that to modify properties the properties of either is as easy as changing a variable related to time, power, distance, speed, etc. It should be as easy as them changing a number from 1.25s animation to 1.32s, with the 'hit damage' being applied at successful completion of the animation, which is all controlled in terms of start/stop by this one number for execution time. There could be other ways of doing it too that may make more sense, depending on how intricate the mechanics are. Part of my concern, and this is where lag/hit registration comes into play, is when the animation/HUD&UI are not synced to avatar movement and actual results, and how the game chooses to display any discrepancy to the observer (other players). In a game like this, where timing is crucial, any discrepancies in animation or HUD updates can literally be the difference between a win and a loss. P2P is typically NOT great at balancing the issue, favoring heavily the host in terms of raw ping and animation sequences. So depending on how a game is coded, results can be extremely erratic. It's definitely a wait and see for me, but I have not seen a game that gets me this revved since Evolve by Turtle Rock. :) I will probably use a free Redbox rental on it in a month or two, but will depend on what actions they take to balance. I wanted to use the beta code I had, but wasn't going to download 10+GB for a two day trial of old code, nosir!
