Sweet memory from the distant past .... When my wife and I started dating in 1975, I brought her home from college to meet the family. Later in the afternoon, we got away from everybody, went down to the basement room, and worked out a PP&Mish duet of this song. It was the first time we sang together, and it is a magical memory to me. When we came back upstairs afterward, my usually straight forward mother came up with a surprisingly witty quip. She said something o the effect of, "It sounded wonderful, but perhaps you might have picked a love song with a slightly more positive message!" 😄 (RIP Gordon Lightfoot)

The first Gordon Lightfoot song I ever heard was this cover by Peter,Paul,an Mary in 1964 was around twelve and The Beatles were the rage of the times. But this song caught my ear and I was captured by it. Such wonderful songs Gordon Lightfoot wrote. RIP.

Recording in studios with multiple tracks & electronic tricks to make it seem like everyone was in sync are great, but here's the charm of 3 people melding their 3 voices & 2 guitars with only 2 mikes. It somehow seems more like real music. Maybe it's just me.

That's what you get for lovin' me That's what you get for lovin' me Everything you had is gone, as you can see That's what you get for lovin' me I ain't the kind to hang around With any new love that I've found Movin' is my stock in trade, I'm movin' on I won't think of you when I'm gone So don't you shed a tear for me I ain't the love you thought I'd be I've got a hundred more like you, so don't be blue I'll have a thousand 'fore I'm through Now there you go you're cryin' again Now there you go you're cryin' again But then someday when your poor heart is on the men I just might pass this way again That's what you get for lovin' me That's what you get for lovin' me Everything you had is gone, as you can see That's what you get for lovin' me

I just love the way this song is portrayed in this version. Never before , or since has such a cold and condescending melody been delivered with such harmony and honest cruelty. They dont make em like this anymore.

indeed. This live performance is a bit rough around the edges, but their perfectly balanced recording was chilling. Gordon Lightfoot composed it but his performance is somewhat lighthearted, as if the narrator is an amusingly oblivious egomaniac. But in PP&M's performance the cruelty seems calculated. Just the opening chords make my heart sink.

Very well put Something about the chemistry of this co-ed trio seems more organic than does an all male or all female trio. Original style and talent for days. If you take any one of PPM by themselves , they would hold their own without struggle, together they remain unparalleled , even in 2021

I also think it's a shame the bass player didn't get more credit, he really added to their sound, and was usually hidden off in the corner. To me he was just as much a part of the group, even if he didn't sing. And no, I'm not a bass player. :) Just a guitar player/singer.

There is something fake here! Peter is pretending to play standup bass (which he normally does) on this acoustic guitar (watch his hands). And Paul indicates a change in chords at the very end of the song where there is no change. I'm both a bassist and a guitarist and I know, unless I've had too much to drink tonite!

Yeah sure, just like that bad hair having spoiled brat of an idiot denied that Covid 19 was a serious threat to the USA. Instead he did absolutely nothing and 600,000 + people in this country are in the ground now because of it. How can anybody still support the tyrant who destroyed our entire planet? Global warming a myth? Dotard! This worm of a man has almost single handedly accelerated human extinction ! Biden may be a pushover lame of a man, but at least he isn't deliberately causing chaos and all the while pretending like he is championing family values and virtues. UHhhhjj,! That makes me want to throw up !
