As an English teacher, I feel her pain. Sometimes students do not get it no matter what we do.

i still dont get it. if the example can be an ad for baby shoes why cant the response be some kind of ad?
@ryko14782 ай бұрын
@@smashmaster2000I mean it can be but it's can't be JUST an ad, in the original there is subtext that the students' "stories" don't have

@@ryko1478Yeah. It’s like what implied. It’s kinda like people-watching, for lack of a better example.
@edenfleck291827 күн бұрын
The point of the example was that a baby had passed away. That's why the shoes were never worn. 6 words, but it makes you feel grief for a person you know nothing about. That's what makes it a story that happens to be in the format of an ad.

The last time I was a teenager was over 45 years ago. But there is one thing I do remember. When my teachers would send me to the principal's office, I just went out to my car and listened to the radio for a while. The teachers never checked to see if I ever arrived. Not once!

@harmonicarchipelgo93512 ай бұрын
Some of these were low-key actually good micro-fiction. The teacher was the one getting hung up on the ad format. Best one was "For sale: Baby Shoes. I kept myself alive." Super dark story and very meta in the space of microfiction.
@rosiebaybie62452 ай бұрын
Interesting, but I’m not sure how the two phrases tie together. Could you please elaborate?
@harmonicarchipelgo93512 ай бұрын
@@rosiebaybie6245 The implication is that in order to stay alive, the seller had to let their baby die. Even darker interpretations could be that they ate their baby or that they actively killed their baby is some high stakes scenario. The details are obviously vague since it is microfiction. The meta part comes from the fact that they combined text from 2 famous micro stories into one still micro sized story. Thus they managed with to pull off multiple instances of allusion in a genre that makes allusion extremely difficult and rare.

This feels like a jab at the education system. Lol It's exaggerated but true from my experience. It's hard to get a real feel for writing when you're either given too specific of an example that you tend to copy the structure superficially or not enough information to understand the core points and come up with something original. Whether this is poor teaching style or students not understanding fundamentals, I'm not sure though.
