the way wirt’s voice goes slightly quieter at 7:57 when he says “my father’s nostalgic voice” leads me to believe his dad is dead. i know in the show they mention that wirt’s mom got remarried to greg’s dad, but we don’t actually know what happened to wirt’s. he sounds slightly nervous throughout this whole thing, but the way he delivers just that one line actually sounds like he’s sad. and the addition of the old recording at 10:58 (some memory that wirt probably recorded over to make this, and also adds to the “nostalgic voice” bit, considering he’d be able to listen to it on these recordings) just makes it even more crazy to think about and even more likely. this show is incredible.

Ok, so this might be an unpopular opinion, but I really like Wirt's poetry. I know that it's probably meant to come off as kind of cringy, but that's mainly due to the fact that it's read in such an awkward way and context, but when you write the words down on paper, you can tell they're very heartfelt. (Personally, I like writing poetry, and I'm very insecure about what I write, so maybe I'm just projecting some of that onto Wirt, but here's my two cents anyways).

To be honest, I feel like this has the exact same charm as the rest of the show. I can really see a younger high schooler making this and being proud that he put his heart and soul into it but then getting embarrassed to share it cause he knows it's not for everyone. The imperfections, the pretentious improv poetry, the little baby talk at the end of side A, the out of tune playing that slowly gets better the longer the tape goes on, and Greg's hilarious interruptions just make it feel more real. I guess it's just one more thing to love about the show: if you keep digging, you'll find the skeletons

this is literally so poetic in everyway possible. What I mean is that the song he plays on the clarinet at the beginning of this tape is the exact same music we hear as we begin each episode. This means that this song is diegetic (the song exists in the character's world as well as the audiences' world). Same with the outro. I love this so much. The details are just so beautiful. Honestly I come listen to this tape whenever I feel anxious or worried because it comforts me, makes me feel warm and makes me feel safe. Wirt as a character is very relatable to me as I am the girl who likes to philosophize about the world and observe every small detail that many don’t appreciate. This poetry speaks to me and the music and authenticity of Wirt’s nervous reading of his poetry is just very comforting. Being around Wirt’s age also makes this tape more significant to me as it makes me feel loved as I sometimes imagine if I were to receive this tape from a guy like him. The show as a whole is very comforting and enjoyable so this tape is simply an extension of the amazing world of Over the Garden Wall ✨🐸

Greg's poetry may be adorably silly, but given that he wrote and came up with all of that when he was only 6, I think it's really impressive! It sounds to me like he picked up quite a bit of his wordplay and descriptive abilities from Wirt, and it makes me hope that he developed a similar passion for poetry and writing as the boys continued to grow up.
