I'm white, 45, two kids, job, a mortgage.... grew up in suburbs of NYC and enjoyed the hell out of their music back in the day when I was in my early 20's and still do today. In fact, I still have a small black 1"x1" Wu-Tang sticker in the left rear window of my car, every once and a while someone will notice it and makes for a great conversation with others who know.

One thing kids today miss out on is going to the record store to get the newest music. Back in the 90s, we didn't have KZbin or the internet, so when you wanted music, you drove to the record shop. There was always the "used" section to go get stuff you already knew of...but...you would also hit the "new" section just to see what was going on. So in 93 I was 22 years old and a huge hip hop head. I remember coming across "36 Chambers" and thinking "Wu Tang? What the hell is this?" and i stood staring for a minute...how bad could it be? Got out to the car and popped it in...OH...MY...GOD. It was AMAZING. Just that grimy, NYC, baggie jeans and hoodies, tims style...my jaw dropped and stayed there. I think that album stayed in my stereo for MONTHS. It was one of those seminal albums that defined an era...a "must have" album...to me, there were 3 albums that defined areas of the 90s...you had Dr Dre "The Chronic" for that West Coast sound...Outkast "Southernplayalistic" for the South and, my favorite, Wu Tang "36 Chambers" for that East Coast...if anyone asks me what albums defined that era, those 3. Just my personal opinion. But man...Wu Tang was just the one that grabbed me and dug its claws into me...in 2019 you can STILL listen to that album all the way through... WU TANG FOREVER!
@middymizzle3056 жыл бұрын
Wow. I'm 37 now, and honored that Wutang was a part of my childhood. No shade on modern artists, but the Wu weren't manufactured guys when they came on scene. They were brothers who had nothing but found something to believe in and shared it with the world; and that something was art in it's purest form. And for heaven sake, they WROTE THEIR OWN RHYMES! Some swords were sharper and faster than others, but ALL were warriors. Wu 4ever!!

The lyrics really stood out to me with this album, dense battle rhymes potent with metaphors. Each Wu MC links his rhymes to crime and violence, allowing his preoccupations to surface subtly and indirectly, rather than spouting off overt gangsta-isms designed to shock ... The hood imagery of the lyrics is utterly pervasive and uncompromising, immersing the listener in a foreign land smack in the middle of New York.

Still remember my high school days, listening to protect ya neck was the song playing in my mind when I confronted a long time bully the first fight I ever got into messed up the dudes leg bad with a broken broom stick and his friends that was helping him didn't even want to jump in to help him when he was down on the floor, after that day got arrested for assault but won the case on self defense a year later. But the eyes on me in school I felt like a pariah no one ever talked to me all I heard was leave that kid alone. Even tho I felt alone it still better than being made fun of and beat up on a daily/weekly basis. Thank you WU TANG for existing.

But from the Islands and when I tell you this group inspired people on every level I mean all aspects of life from teachers to pastors drug dealers you name it at some point in time it was the Clan that inspired or influenced a whole 3 Generations. Trust and believe probably the most influential musical group of all time. It can never be duplicated its timing was what it was like The Bob Marley and the Whalers. Richard Pryor.
