For the first time in NHL history...

The NHL season is upon us! In the first game of opening day we had the Seattle Kraken vs St Louis Blues and on day one, Jessica Campbell behind the bench was already making history! Hired by the Seattle Kraken and Dan Bylsma who tapped her shoulder to come up to the NHL level, she now has officially made NHL history as the first female assistant coach! She’s coming off 2 consecutive Calder Cup appearances with the Coachella Valley Firebirds as the assistant coach. She's a 2 time medalist at the Women's Worlds u18 with Gold and Silver as well as a silver medalist at the 2015 World Championships. She’s ran her own business as a skating coach, actually coached guys like Luke Schenn, Shea Weber and Matt Barzel among others so, she’s earned this! So, how’d her debut go? Well, pretty damn well early on as the Kraken came out firing peppering BInnington early. However, after a reversed goal due to offside and a scrum near the Blues bench, momentum shifted hard. The Blues came alive, Kyrou showed his dominance and they came back to tie this game and then take the lead in an explosive second period. I don't like to be one of those guys who corrects everybody, but I have to step in here. It's Seattle "versus" St. Louis. It's not Seattle "verse" St. Louis, because a verse is a part of a song and versus is teams opposing each other. Here's the actual definition: Versus and verses sound alike but are different words. Versus means “against” and is often seen abbreviated as vs. and v. Verses is the plural of verse, meaning “a part of a poem, song, or chapter of the Bible.” You've got one job - to use proper English. Get on it...

Too much good will has been exploited for me to believe this is nothing but another sad example of virtue signalling and progressive politics infecting another cultural realm it has no inherent interest in beyond expanding its destructive cult. That being said I like Campbell and I have no doubt she’s incredibly hockey smart and can do the job. At the same time I definitely doubt she was hired because she’s the best person overall for the job. Doing this sorta stuff for the wrong reasons is socially caustic. I hope she does well.

That’s a major problem with the dei hiring practices. Even if she was the best person for the job no one will ever know and most will doubt it. Hiring people for immutable characteristics and not merit often turns out to be pretty cruel. Especially in sports where it’s most obvious.

I'm sure they will let her go if she's not doing good, so not long until we find out. You can't really keep a coach if they're doing a crappy job. As I understand, she has quite a bit of background in the Seattle farm team and a close relation with the head coach which makes bringing her in seem pretty organic, no? I don't think they should have skipped hiring a capable coach just because people will think it's virtue signaling due to the person's immutable characteristics. As we all know, major sports are very results (revenue) driven so I doubt the owners would accept a DEI hire as a coach.
