When I was a wee lass I'd climb this specific rowanberry tree at school during recess. The winter cold made the bitterness disappear entirely. That taste is pure nostalgia ❤ I visited that same tree a few days ago, but in the matter of 10 years its branches have grown too tall for me to reach, even when climbing 😞

Made rowan berry jelly couple of weeks ago. Have it with peanut butter and crackers, delicious and strangely tart. Yum

Rowan berries are odd in the same sense as wild apples: individual trees/bushes can have crazy different flavor profiles. My father used to eat rowan berries but only from a select few trees he knew. You have to find the ones that are less astringent and more sweet. There are also strange European man-made hybrids of rowans that are far more palatable than the average wild trees.
