I eat Cat's Ear pretty regularly in salads. To deal with the hairiness, I just chop all my greens up very fine. It helps mix the flavors of all the different weeds, tree leaves, and flowers that I gather, too. I never even thought to eat the flowers, though, so thanks - I'll try that tomorrow! I do eat a lot of dandelion flowers (and greens), so I'm looking forward to comparing their flavors. Happy foraging!

I will tell you one of the benefits (or not) of the false Dandelion... a laxative! Boy did I find out the hard way. Do not eat too much of either at one time. They are great to add to other greens in a salad for a nice balance. Add with Purslane, Shepherds purse and chickweed and top with a sprinkle of the yellow flowers! YUM! Tip: to take the flower off the green base... hold the flower by the green base with your thumb and first two fingers, gently squeeze and push your thumb forward and back in a sprinkling motion and voila! Each petal falls individually onto your salad and looks so delightful! Enjoy as your liver will get healthier!

Yeah, the entire family is diuretic. Definitely make sure to stay plenty hydrated when eating them. They're practically as dehydrating as coffee. Yet, ironically enough, they can be good for your kidneys in small amounts.

Thank you. Very helpful. I am in AZ and have these all over my yard. Most them don’t flower or I pull before they flower. Seems they don’t flower much. But I feel like I’ve been throwing out a great source of greens which are hard to find fresh in AZ. I’ll definitely save the flowers and eat/ utilize them when they do flower. Thank you again for this vital information which I personally needed to utilize this health green. I’ll cook them because they do feel/hairy almost spikey if that’s a word? . .

For the record, virtually no false dandelions species are toxic. It's a very edible family of plants. As long as you're not a horse, you should be fine! With that said, definitely be more careful about identifying EXACT SPECIES plants before eating them. There's plenty of other edible plants with deadly lookalikes.

First, latex comes in numerous forms which may react to your body differently. The definition of a latex is surprisingly... vague. The USDA Forest Service states: Latex is a thick, creamy white, milky emulsion, although sometimes it may be a thin, clear, yellow or orange, aqueous suspension. Here's the link talking about it: www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/ethnobotany/latex.shtml Second, virtually everyone in the dandelion family has latex sap, though different species may produce different amounts. Third, Catsear definitely produces plenty of latex. Cutting the stem will cause the milky stuff to leach out. From what I can tell, catsear produces quite a bit more than true dandelion.

@kidwolf0015

Depends on the species... There's numerous "false dandelion" species! As for common names, there's multiple types of cat's ear (such as smooth and hairy), Carolina False Dandelion, and Dwarf Dandelions (also can describe multiple species). I learned this because true dandelions aren't a thing in 99.9% of Florida. It would be downright irresponsible to attempt to "farm" them here... and futile. They supposedly don't grow very well here. We do have multiple native false dandelion species here though. I don't know much about the separate nutritional facts of each one. Another note: Do not feed ANY false dandelions to horses. Period. For whatever reason, they all poison horses. Not even the vets seem to know WHY they're poisonous to horses. Even weirder, true dandelions are significantly less poisonous to them.

They can have varying shades of yellow depending on the false dandelion species. False Carolina Dandelion, for example, have almost neon yellow colored blooms. Other species have almost orangey-yellow colored blooms. True dandelions and most cat's ears are in-between. However, they are all still shades of yellow.

There is one plant that looks like dandelion but is not edible. The difference is that dandelion flowers have individual stems per each flower that go all the way down to the main plant. The look alike plant has several branches of flowers on each stem that then goes down to the main plant. I forget off the top of my head what it's called though. Sorry. Perhaps just do a search on look alike dandelions. It's bound to come up,

Sow Thistle. Or Soncus. And it's every bit as edible as the actual dandelion. The only plants with serrated leaves that aren't recommended to eat are ones with spines on them, which there are several of. You can eat most of them, but you'd need to grind them fully in advance, and some can be poisonous. Dandelion look alikes are all related to the real thing, the documented ones.

yes, if any of these were poisonous we would probably know by now, as I'm certain many people have used these the same way for teas and root coffee. there is no evidence that the three other commonly called Dandelions like hawkbit, hawkbeard and catsear are bad for humans but some cases of Australian Stringhalt have been associated in horse's when the horses continually grazed on catsear www.equusite.com/articles/health/healthStringhaltAussie.shtml
