@@AntsVienna Well the person who posted after my original post said it quite well. Anyway, yeah your channel is way better. I like Esthetic Ants as well and other smaller channels because I find the content interesting. It's easier to ask a question or make a comment and have a conversation with the content maker. I must say that I do enjoy Antscanada too but I prefer watching his older videos much more, like videos from 5,6, or even 7 years ago. I think if you saw them you might understand what I mean? I get the feeling that the content he makes is about getting "clicks" and it isn't necessarily about what his viewers care about.

What about now? Actually many ant species can move in wood nests, even if they don't prefer them (like Lasius Niger for example). A perfect fit however are Camponotus Vagus, Nicobarensis and other woodloving species.

Hello! i wil have a Crematogaster scutellaris ant soon and i hear they like wood nests more, but how wil they keep this moist? wil they just collect water from the tubes and make the nests moisture?
@AntsVienna2 жыл бұрын
Hello there. Yes, wood nesting ant species take water from liquid feeders and distribute it within the nests themselves. I explain more about wood ant species in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZ6Vl4KNatOAapo&ab_channel=AntsVienna

The ash wood nest would be great for Camponotus pennsylvanicus and the dark nest would be great for Camponotus castaneus.

Hei there, so I'm new to the channel and I've a question about ant keeping. Do you cover the glass of the nest with something? Or do just let them open and exposed to light? (I'm just asking here cause this video was uploaded the latest). I really like your video's!! Keep up the work 👍🏻👍🏻 Greetings from the Netherlands.
@AntsVienna2 жыл бұрын
Hello and welcome to my channel then :) You can use some red plastic to cover the front. Some ants feel more comfortable if you do that. However it is schientifically not proven yet that ants can't see red light - like many people suggest. Hope this helps you out! Nice Vid, In my opinion these nests would be very situational. Secondly I do see several downsides. First and most important, with a gap between the plastic and the wood how are you controlling the humidity? Second wood this hard might bend or crack the plastic on a humid day. I think it would be difficult to hibernate C. Vagus and C. Ligniperdia in such nest. As a side question are you able to disasemble and reasemble the nest for cleaning purposes? It would be great seeing people housing Formica sp. inside these nests however, despite my concerns.
@AntsVienna2 жыл бұрын
Hello again. Critical as always - but fairly so👍 Regarding humidity regulation: Wood ant species (like Camp. Vagus for example) do actively regulate humidity in their nest by themselves - e.g. by picking up water from a feeder (outworld) and applying to nest walls if needed. About hibernation: Generally speaking, no matter what ants you keep, if you don't have a way to actively regulate humidity as a keeper, you have (in my opinion) to place a test tube in the outworld - so your ants have the chance to hibernate there if the feel the need for it - at least that's what I do for my colonies. Finally, Cleaning: I guess that you are able to dissemble them (take off the front panel), BUT from what I've seen the screws are driven directly in the wood. So you have to do it carefully, otherwise they might get loose (over years of use).
@AntsVienna2 жыл бұрын
As for housing Formica in them... I currently (2am in the morning) cannot think of a wood-loving Formica species. Most of them build earth nests. However if you do know of some Formica that love wood feel free to let me know.
@treeharltreeharl92322 жыл бұрын
@@AntsVienna Well F. Fusca could build her nest in wet and rotten wood. I turned many logs this year and they house their larvae and sometimes their pupae fully in wood. If I even slightly twisted the wood, the Fusca workers swarm out of the wood. Depending on conditions they build their nest slightly below or directly inside it. I also think F. Sanguinea builds her nest inside wood, but I am less sure as I don't turn logs when I see them. I have a LOT of Sanguinea nests (even more then F. Fusca!) in my area and they house directly in trunks and thick mostly rotten branches and sometimes directly in dirt.

Hello Gordon. I am glad my video was informative for you. The nests look gorgeous in person. Not sure on your import question...
