First he wasn't burned to a crisp. He was burned. Burned mostly well done, not crispy. You'd be surprised how long you have to be in a fire to be burned to a crisp. Second, anything not directly exposed to direct flame will survive as melted or scorched. So that is why wallets are recovered. You either sit on the wallet protecting it or it's in your pocket and not exposed to direct flame. You also see almost everything was in a condition to be recovered and examined. The sprinkler system and the response of the FD with an EV fire suppression protocol helped.

"Burnt beyond recognition" doesn't mean his whole body is burnt up. It means you can't compare the face to an ID card. Also depending on where the id card and passport were stored that makes a huge difference. So if his ID and passport for example were under his ass-cheek and his head and anything above the chest is burnt beoyon recognition, a belly or leg tattoo is still not burnt up. If the id card was on the center console or the dashboard close to the windscreen it could have been blown out of the car by the explosion with the glas and hence not be burned up completely. Would not be the first time that something goes flying because of an explosion and subsequently gets less damaged.
