I really wish people would stop parroting this, "We're not a democracy, we're a republic" bullshit, and maybe think about it for a minute. "Democracy" and "republic" are not mutually exclusive, hence the term "democratic republic." If a country's leaders are elected by the citizens of a country, that's a democracy. When people can vote on proposed law, as they can in some states, that's democracy. When Lincoln said, ". . .that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth,” I doubt that there were any know-it-alls saying, "Hey, we're not a democracy, we're a republic!" The *_elected_* representatives in our representative democratic republic keep referring to our democracy because that's what it is; being a constitutional republic doesn't change that.
