Growing up with films like "Them", "Plan 9 from Outer Space", "The Blob" and so many more, this film was a revelation. I had the VHS and DVD versions. Beautiful color, pretty good acting, effects amazing for the day. I especially loved was the soundtrack. The music soundtrack was the first completely electronic film score; the soundtrack preceded the invention of the Moog synthesizer by eight years (1964). Louis Barron constructed his own electronic circuits that he used to generate the score. Most of the sounds were generated using an electronic circuit called a "ring modulator. And because of TV, Robbie became a household word for millions of kids.
@carycomic19542 жыл бұрын
Interesting! I always thought it was a theremin (first invented circa 1928).
@l8tbraker2 жыл бұрын
@UCubn9cUhps1wTF5ut_eIUng The theremin was patented in 1928, the ring modulator in 1934. So a few years difference. A theremin was not used for the soundtrack of Forbidden Planet, for which Bebe and Louis Barron built disposable oscillator circuits and a ring modulator to create the electronic tonalities used in the film.

My all time favorite movie out of around 200 movies in my collection. Got this one on blue-ray and the picture quality is outstanding. It would be impossible to re'make this movie, it would and almost certainly be a CGI disaster. A good part of this films charm is its 1950's robot and flying saucer, with the fantastic character drawn by Walter Pidgion as Morbius and a brilliant monster. This movie was the first ever top budget sci'fi movie ever made. A must watch for those who have never seen it, and DO get it on blue-ray, its well worth it, completely re'mastered.

Forbidden Planet Remake, The Krell Live! Here is a rough sketch of what a remake could be like. Part 1. It starts back in time, millions of years earlier on Altair IV. We learn a little bit about the Krell, their advanced society, philosophy, architecture, history, their appearance, etc. We move toward what we were told about their supposed annihilation (from the original Forbidden Planet), yes they disappeared but they were not annihilated as we eventually find out. Part 2. Millions of years later what remained of the Krell were discovered by archaeologists and the crew of the Bellerophon. But they unwittingly opened Pandora's box and were annihilated by things they could not understand. Their doom was the result of the Captain and the Bellerophon's crew having completed their primary mission wanted to leave Altair IV and head back to Earth, but Morbius and wife were unwilling and refused due to their love of Altair IV. The struggle between Morbius and the rest of the crew set off a chain reaction in Morbius's reptailian brain, the id. Unknowingly to Morbius, that anger and hatred was amplified, multiplied millions of times and projected into reality by Krell devices, still running for millions of years. All of the Bellerophon's crew were hunted down and killed by invisible monsters who literally tore them into pieces, killing them, and the few that made it to the Bellerophon were vaporized by a ray blast also created from Morbius id by the Krell machines. After the destruction, the monsters mysteriously disappear as Morbius's id is satisfied and the Krell device shuts down. Afterwards, Morbius and wife attempt to build a life on Altair IV. They started to build a family having a child they named Altaira, but Morbius wife dies a few months later after the birth of their daughter. Morbius raises the child, builds a house and being a Philolgist begins to study and learn about the Krell civilization and their technology, he eventually builds a robot named Robby that employs AI. As the years go by, Morbius's knowledge of Krell technology grows enormously and he has no time for trivial projects . Part 3. 20 years later the C57D arrives, but this time we (audience) find out that the Krell are not dead, they live in a realm without instrumentality, without bodies. Unknown to Morbius or the crew of the C57D, the enormous Krell machine, spread out over 8,000 cubic miles, containing 400 shafts, each having 7800 levels are constantly running and doing more then any of them realize. The machine is maintaining the realm where the Krel live. Part 3 is similar to the story line in the original FP, but in this case it is humanity that destroys the Krell when Morbius throws the switch and tells J.J. Adams he has 24 hours to get Altaira, himself and crew a million miles away from Altair IV as a planetary destruction sequence has started and cannot be halted. Morbius's passion was to study to learn about the Krell, he knew that their knowledge was far too dangerous for humanity to handle, yet is is he who destroys the Krell to prevent / forbid humanity from possessing Krell knowledge.

This preview trailer was made between Dec. 1955 and March 1956, while the film was in post-production, and the Barrons were working on their excellent electronic tonalities score in Greenwich Village, New York. Well it has been 58 years and I'm still waiting for a better science fiction movie to be produced. Sure there have been many space westerns, space pirate movies and 1940s serials run into 2hr installment space trilogies , but this one was classy & it came in an era of drive-in B trash. MGM has done the classiest Sci-Fi with adult writing for the last 60 years with the best writing for TV and film. Remember Twilight Zone was an MGM production as was 2001, the sleeper series UFO and some of the better written anthology series in the 90s & 00s. Even the two pilot episodes for original Star Trek were filmed at MGM Culver (some using set props from Forbidden Planet: look at the Krell doors) Fair enough since Star Trek (the better plots) was really Forbidden Planet the TV series.
