The first time I saw this was in the late 80's. I was in awe with the great special FX, even after three Star Wars films. And I read science fiction all the time.. And I think this is really great early SF.

In short. this movie uncovers the reality that the further we push technology, the closer we come to releasing the monster we all hide from each other. Just look at social media today and the things we say to each other while anonymous. Just imagine what we would do to each other if our deep thoughts were to manifest uncontrolled. This movie was a very important warning to the future

Is a monster of the SUB-conscious. The Great Machine is bringing the monster to life from the nightmares and destructive thoughts of the sub-conscious mind. Which the Krell weren’t even aware they still possessed. Although the Krell were too highly ethical and moral to consciously think destructive thoughts, the Great Machine made no such distinction between the conscious thought and the sub-conscious when turning thoughts in to physical reality.

Those long expository dialog laden sequences are a good part of what makes the story and film great sci-fi. They help viewers to imagine that the Krell really did once exist, and that they had attained a level of technological development which not only was far beyond that of human civilization 200 years in our future, but also had attained that development many millennia ago.

Wonderful commentary, very insightful description of this film, the inspiration to Star Trek, Space 1999, and all the sci-fi that came after. They all owe a debt to this film, a decade ahead of its time.

The video essay points out many important things in this film. The final conclusion about the flaws of biology which are contained within any advanced, higher intelligent, living being is sobering. It is a message which science fiction can give which is pessimistic to its core. A warning for the hubris of technical/cultural achievement of civilization. The question is; are we doomed? An answer can be found from this film and it gives the reasons why. * Another important part of Forbidden Planet is its pivotal place in the history of TV space travel science fiction. Once The Twilight Zone was done, Star Trek became the dominant formula for space travel TV SF. Star Trek owes a lot to Forbidden Planet; the concept of the romantic captain, the crew that deals with a problem on a planet, the meeting of a beautiful woman and also dealing with a cunning antagonist; the expendable crew member, the comic relief moments. These are all in Forbidden Planet and they became the staples of the Star Trek franchise, Stargate, with variations in Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica and so on to this day.

Robbie may not have been the only Krell techology that got away. Morbius had known that he would not live long enough to complete his work on the Krell records. So he needed an academic heir. Altaira must have been exposed to the "plastic educator" because she "saw" the Id monster attack on the C-57D as it was happening. She had a "nightmare" because she was linked to the machine, just as Morbius was. I wonder what knowledge she might have brought back to Earth...

Doubtful - Altaira actually was quite fearful and resentful of the Krell technology as she eventually saw what it was doing to her father as well as suspicions she may have had concerning the Bellerophon tragedy. This is mentioned in the novel. Logically, I would think Adams would have taken everything they could from the Krell lab and Morbius' study related to the Krell's technology - Morbius must had had notes, records, and other artifacts of the Krell.
@isaackellogg3493
@isaackellogg3493 Жыл бұрын
In a version I watched back in the eighties (which has since been Mandela Effected away) Morbius showed the Captain and Doctor how he could make a hologram of Altaira using the brain machine, and claimed that after using the advanced setting (which fried the doctor’s brain) he had created a solid Altaira from his brain-they had met her. So that Altaira was actually a piece of (at least secondhand) Krell technology. So far as I know, no trace of this (now parallel universe) version remains.

Yes, granted that Forbidden Planet has much expository dialogue, but that's because It also has many interesting ideas! One could only wish that the dialogue/ideas of Star Wars, and other more current films would rise above above a junior high school level. It seems that the more progressive the film technology, the more regressive the concepts and emotions presented. Mature reflection is replaced by jumping up & down, explosions, etc.Though not a new idea, it's good to remember that Star Wars, at its core, is medieval knights/swords/sorcery transferred to outer space. At least Forbidden Planet, despite it flaws, tried to approach the future in a more honest, questioning, and probing manner. Hence its influence on future film makers.

Your background in literature and theater made this thoughtful, interesting. This is smart sci-fi. The story captivated me as a kid. The scale of the vast energy network, the Krell, done in by their own technology and hunger for knowledge, the robot - these gave this film thought provoking depth and stimulated my own young mind more than most films. Especially the monster from the id - an intro to Freud for me at an early age. Thanks very much.

your analysis is excellent, thank you. That this movie is weighted more towards in depth dialogue than action sequences, is a reflection of the times in which is was scripted/made. Movies in that general era were almost always heavy with dialogue instead of action, because of the perceived intellect of the masses who would be viewing and appreciating/critiquing this movie, any movie at that time. Appreciating this movie in those parameters makes it a great cross over from the pre-war trans-war post-war movies of strong powerful movie characters to the rapidly developing 50's era of action action action with enough intellectual dialogue to still keep the audience enthralled, who expected traditional style but now combined with this new idea of 'what if' science fiction that is far more action than they were used to. I love this movie for everything that it is, including the radically new/experimental sound effects/music. Anne Francis in a mini dress was also a bold bold move.

From 7:42 - "Morbius still has human emotions. He fears, for example, what the men might do to his daughter." I would greatly appreciate it if the creator of this video or a commentator might cite some specific dialogue that indicates this. In my opinion, Morbius shows very little actual concern for what might happen to Alta at the hands of the new arrivals, and even less emotion in this regard. This is not to say that he doesn't try to hide her from the crew initially - clearly he does, as he hides a number of things. Adams is the only one who evidences any protective attitude whatsoever toward Alta (and I suggest that this is actually a relevant plot point, noting for whom she falls.) Enjoyed the video, BTW. Nice to see a FP review video with actual footage instead of stills.

Actually, Robbie was NOT an aspect of Caliban. He was Forbidden Planet's version of Ariel, the mischevious spirit Prospero bends to his will. BTW, I have never been able to figure out WHY the Krell would place a planetary self-destruct mechanism on their power source in the first place, let alone why they would make it so easily accessible, and without ANY security measures required to activate it. In Star Trek, the Enterprise's self destruct required the identification and coded verification of THREE senior officers, AND their verbal acquiesence to the move, before it could be initiated

Yes, the silliness of this all too easily accessed doomsday switch struck me as very odd even when i first saw this as a child. It’s the only way i could make sense out of it.

Its was better than I expected, and to see Leslie Nelson in a serious role was very interesting. Also you can definitely see some of the sexist attitude of the time, from how the crew talk about Morbius's daughter in front of him, to the wife joke about how useful Robie was. To the complete lack of women in the crew. You can even see the the commander implying the blueballs of the crew to Altaira. Heck even Altaira herself was wearing pretty short skirt throughout most of the movie. The set pieces were interesting, sad I only got to see one angle of the UFO the crew used. The technology especially on the ship was really weird, somethings made sense the others less so. The crew also didn't seem to know what to do in the beginning when they are coming to the new planet, they sort of just hung around, heck you just see the cook just standing on deck with everyone else doing nothing. You will see a lot of weird moments like this, they don't make sense but whatever.

she was mostly cut out of FG, supposedly cause Barbra was intimidated by her beauty and more of her than we saw. Look up her films on IMDB and there are some gems. Just really could have been more used in films, she had the talent. Maybe her beauty was a possible reason, with some thinking she didn't need talent, and so passed on her. I enjoyed "the Rack", with Paul Newman, and "Girl of the Night -1960 is a great performance and not a sleazy movie, but a more true to life one that era hadn't seen. Of course, all the appearances on Twilight Zone , Hitchcock, and 2 great leads in Route 66. She deserved higher recognition. But, she turned more to TV and was very active. I wouldn't say the original Star Wars was "action, action, and more action." That would be more like Terminator. A New Hope is actually the slowest movie in the series (even though the prequels feel much slower because they're so boring).

You speak of Forbidden Planet as if it cannot hold a modern audience's attention. I disagree.

The movie is very similar to "Star Trek" in its approach; John Adams could easily be James T. Kirk. One difference is that, if it was a "Star Trek" episode, the knowledge of the Krell would have been absorbed into the Enterprise's computer system before the planet blew up.

Star trek it is not, if anything star trek copied it. Same with star wars. They both make me cringe at how "simple" they are.

The first time I saw this I was 7 years old... in 1971.... and it scared the bejeebers out of me. I have since come to understand what a classic it is, and is one of my all time favorites. But after the remake of Lost In Space (1999) I think... I had a dream that Steven Speilburg got ahold of this and did a remake of Forbidden Planet... another special effects loaded extravaganza, and Robbie the Robot was so over done with blinking LEDs, it hurt the eyes, and would give someone who has epilepsy an attack. BUT!... Forbidden Planet, from 1956, with its special effects, even by today's post Star Wars standards, is unparalleled.

The nuclear technology allegory is much more relevant than all the 2010's and 2020's social issues you discuss. If you want to explore the social dynamics, I think it would be more interesting to compare and contrast this movie to others of its time.

Isn’t the AI controlling Gort, the robot of The Day the Earth Stood Still, much like the nightmare manifestation of the monster from the ID? They both punish bad behavior severely and yet reward good? ⚡️🚀

Careful, this was a brilliant film and the begining of an epoque. Not to be trifled with, for 1957 this was genius both in special effects, music and sound track and the story let alone great performances by Nielson, Pidgeon and Francis. The touches of the 1950s are. to be expected and add charm to this great classic, which was in the end better than The Tempest by Shskespere, in my view. The Id remains our greatest enemy today.

Forbidden Planet, based partly from a Shakespeare story (The Tempest), and 2001 A Space Oddesy, were the greatest Science Fiction movies ever made, vastly superior to any other such movies. And despite very old technology, their special effects are still vastly superior to anything since then. It's very, very obvious that Star Trek was based on Forbidden Planet, which Roddenberg never admitted. And Star Wars is more childlike, while the above films are for educated adults.
