What are the benefits of using unbound on the same vm as pi-hole instead of unbound on opnsense?
@overthinkingtech2 жыл бұрын
None. In fact I have been using the opnsense unbound as having unbound on a port that isn't 53 has compatibility issues. I only included it in the video for people who want pi-hole but don't necessarily want opnsense. I'll bring this up in the next video looking at lan-cache because that will be adding a dns hop.

Right, another similar question: why choose a VM instead of lxc container for pihole? I saw that you used Home Assistant as well, a video about how and what choices you have made for networking for that would be interesting as well.

Thanks for the tutorial, I wonder why not using ad block list in opnsense?
@overthinkingtech2 жыл бұрын
It's just for the gui, pi-hole makes checking in on your devices way easier. If that's not something you care about then the ad-block lists in opnsense are a great choice.

If you have pfSense/OPNsense why do you need pihole/unbound? For example Unbound is build into pfSense and AFAIK OPNsense too, ads blocking function is also there... Everything can be managed on pfSense/OPNSense level And If you truely need it is way much easier to set up pihole + unbound into docker containers in one docker compose stack inside LXC container. I had this before I've swiched completly to pfSense

I use pihole because I like having the nice gui to easily check in on devices. When I setup lan-cache I had it use unbound built into opnsense, so I don't actually use the unbound installation shown in this video.

Hi, I’m very interested in your content 😊 I just bought a HP T620+ with an Intel T4-350 and 16GB RAM to run the „always on“ services in my network with an energy efficient device (my TrueNAS Server is efficient but 60W idle). I already installed Proxmox on the box and pfSense. Home Assistant is another must. What would you recommend for Pi-Hole, DNS Server, and optional TP-Link Omada with „just a slow“ Quadcore?
@overthinkingtech Жыл бұрын
A slower quadcore is likely plenty for those services. Something to keep in mind is more smaller machines aren't always more efficient than 1 larger machine.
