• Some important points : 1.Heat transfer from surface exposed to atmosphere in such a way that fluid flows only because of temperature driven density based buoyant forces. 2. As long as temperature difference is there from surface to free stream fluid, fluid will rise or fall as per density effect. 3. The circulation cycles will continues as long as temperature gradient is there. In steady state this process is continuous & almost non-ending but in unsteady state, this process is long lasting only till surface temperature & free stream fluid temperature difference existing & reducing to zero. (Ts = f(time) as time passes, T approaches to T_free stream) 4. Very large exposed surfaces are necessary for same heat transfer rate by natural convection as compared to forced convection. 5. Radiation takes its dominance more in natural convection than in forced convection. 6. Geometrical & orientation of heat transfer interfaced surface is critical in natural convection as compared with forced convection. 7. In forced convection, pumping power requirements for fluid flow is inherent drawback & sometimes compromise exists between maximum heat transfer rate & minimum pumping power. This is not requiring in natural convection. 8. Generally, it is suggested that natural convection should be used if our heat transfer requirement is not urgent as per economy, efficiency or safety point of view & at the same time if we can afford large surface area to heat transfer. But forced convection requirements are obvious if cooling or heating is fast as better in front of size, space available or manufacturing constraints. For that we have to compromise with its pumping cost.
