Good video Anty but I'm not sure if you missed it or left it out but high guardian spice was screwed over by the company as they put all their money into the marketing but barely anything for writer, artist, vc, or any of the creators.
@starbit50652 сағат бұрын
High Guardian Spice is such an interesting rabbit hole when you actually look into its production history. From the beginning you could clearly tell it was originally intended to be geared for the same audience as something like She-Ra or Steven Universe. But then it was picked up by Crunchyroll of all companies, who heavily marketed it to a completely different demographic, then giving the team little to no funding/resources to flesh out the writing and animation. It's like it was deliberately set up to fail. Had it been a show for Netflix or Prime Video it probably could've been a decent but nothing special show with a small following, but instead it was doomed to be one of the defacto punching bags for online anime communities.

Honestly I still feel awful for everyone who worked on the project. While I didn't like certain aspects of the show, wasn't a fan of the character design and some scenes weren't to my liking, it did not deserve the beating that it got. The fact that the creator was harassed by idiots made my stomach turn. I genuinely hope they're doing better nowadays.

I just wanted to talk about the "Spiderman is Spiderman and Miles is Miles" thing, because it has always upset me. (I'm not sure if you bring this up in the video because I'm at the 20ish minute mark rn) But it upsets me for multiple reasons, the main one is that they ignore the reason why Spiderman was made in the first place. Stan lee gave him Spiderman a mask so that anyone could be Spiderman. Spiderman is the mask, a symbol, and whoever puts it on becomes spiderman. Spiderman was made to progressive because that was Stan Lee wanted. That's second reason why i hate "miles is miles" thing. Because it ignores stan lee's orginal intentions. Sorry is this doesn't make since, I'm not good with words.

The whole “Miles is replacing Peter as Spider-Man” complaint is especially bizarre considering characters like John Stewart and Wally West exist. I haven’t seen anyone complain about them. These characters aren’t “replacing” anyone. If anything, they’re upholding the legacy of a superhero name. Tons of comic book characters share the same superhero name. It’s not an issue for them, so why is it suddenly an issue for Miles?

It is woke in the original sense, because it is actively tackling social rights and workers rights issues, talking ablut racism and prejudice, criticizing oligarchic societies, tackling police brutality, war crimes and showing us how colonization can work and shows it as a bad thing. And it's woke in the modern anty sjw sense, that it has several queer characters in it, has more than just a few people of colour in prominent roles, centers around a lot of strong women, shows women to be in powerful pozitions etc. The show is woke as fuck no matter from what perspective you look at it, but it's done well. The issue here is, that your usual smooth brained anty sjw just conflated progressive themes aka "wokeness" with "low quality", which was bullshit from the start. the forced diversity "scare" also kinda contributed to the whole media literacy issue, i feel. i feel like because we're given crumbs of diversity, we just settle for the slop we get fed from studios lazily trying to appeal to us without any actual effort to tell a STORY. but between the desperation of representation and fragile ego'd white men who can't even handle their burger king order being slightly wrong without making 1000 death threats at the poor cashiers, we're kinda stuck with what we have. we don't like the idea of demanding more out of what we're given. it discourages us from seeing the deeper layers of media. By we, I mean my generation of queer people, mostly. it's kinda frustrating as a queer neurodivergent myself. i want more out of what i get. idk. maybe it's just me.

I think it's perfectly okay with NOT being okay that the portrayal of your community isnt being done well. This is honestly why this is all so frustrating to me. They aren't writing these diverse characters to create an organic relatable character that we as the consumer can attach to and feel for. They are instead pandering to the community, which to me is no worse than zero diversity. I'm a cis white dude, I can't sit here and remotely act like I know what it's like to experience these things and this kind of vitriol and hostility over something so little as a pronoun. But my partner is non-binary, and I love to tell them about these new character being introduced into stories that aren't straight white dudes, it makes them feel good and hopeful for the future of media that this stuff is more common place, but at the same time I'm equally infuriated because these same characters are so horribly written it's hard not to feel like it's done with an ulterior motive. When a beloved source material gets used for this stuff, while at the same time not even being true to it, you can't expect fans to be okay with that either. But you also can't criticize the writing without people thinking you're part of the chud gang that hates "wokeness". Taash in DA:V is a perfect example of this pandering. It's not even that they are non binary, it's not that it is a focus of their personal quest. It's that the character feels like it's been written by someone that is coming from one singular, very specific, lived experienced and and self-inserted their own projections into the character. Written in a way that doesnt fit the tone or vibe of the source material. You can't expect people to love your characters when it feels like you've never taken a creative writing class and taken all of your writing advice from Lily Orchard. There are trans creators on youtube that specifically break this character down and explain why Taash is such bad representation. People shouldn't be getting upset that there is diversity and inclusivity in video games, comics, or other media. People should be getting pissed off that these characters are so poorly written, that it feels like the representation and portrayal is purely to placate and pander to the community, and this writing is literally coming from the community. It IS possible to write compelling, lovable, and relatable characters that are also diverse and coming from a place of inclusivity.

YO as a gay autistic person(and probably neurodivergent), I feel ya' & yeah, it can be frustrating to see we either get characters that hardly exist or those freakin' dad stereotypes. It especially frustrates me because I have some kinds of ideals on how I live that sadly are similar to what some of these anti-woke slop creators do... SUCH AS: 1. I don't like where modern AAA games have gone: They don't like them because of diversity & whatnot. I don't like them because of them doing the same hyperrealistic graphics bullcrap time & time again, being churned out at rates faster than any realistic amount of time would've allowed them, microtransactions & DLC up the butt, consoles going for prices far beyond what I would willingly pay for(and usually I wouldn't even HAVE enough money to pay for it), etc. Heck, unlike them, I didn't even want a PS4 ever & only got one(well, TWO actually) this year because my dad wanted one(I've been in this living situation for a while now). Indie games I don't play much of, but I do enjoy a lot of the ones I've played, albeit a lot of it is homebrew on older consoles because yeah. 2. I usually go for older games: They go for it because "it was back when nothing was woke garbage". I go for it because it's often CHEAPER to do so, whether I can find a console or game for a low price or can just emulate whatever I feel like playing, the latter especially for games that go for like, a bajillion dollars online. Not to mention despite being Gen Z, I mainly grew up with the PS2 & Sega Genesis games(the latter mostly via AtGames plug-n-plays) on a means of playing on a TV, the rest were emulated. I had a PS3 & some games for it, but that was like the last generation I sorta kept up with.

I was one of those people who used to think forced diversity was a thing despite the fact I, despite being fluid, mainly identify as my assigned at birth gender (woman), had gay characters, had a trans character before I knew what trans was (and most likely came from exploring my own gender identity), characters of different colors, and other characters that would be considered "woke". But I got mad at the idea that someone would DARE make the same things for reasons I don't know why. I don't know if I parroted my pastors, KZbin of the time, or despite being progressive had my own prejudices that needed checking. Maybe all of the above. I always thought the whole reason why Bruce couldn't control Hulk while Jen and others usually could was because he had a form of DID caused from being abused by his father, so its almost literally a split personality take over while with Jen, She-Hulk is still just Jen but more confident.
@LegacyComics1002 сағат бұрын
Correct, there’s also the power dynamic between the two that’s prevalent why Jen is weaker than her cousin. She got a sample of his blood while Bruce took the whole rays from the Gamma bomb. The only factor that could contribute to evening them as competitors out is with what Peter David explained when he wrote Gray Hulk(Joe Fixit); Basically this Hulk only comes out at night and gets weakened and harmed whenever the sun comes out, there was a time he was Hulk full time after what happened with Ground Zero, but the sun still takes a toll that Banner would be left in his place. However, Joe is still a major competitor that he has a lot more feats than SSJ3(no eyebrows).

Back in the 2010s when they used the "forced diversity" criticism it was always like "they are re-writing history" or "They are using this as a cheap marketing gimmick", hence it was supposedly "forced", because you're taking something "white" and making it not so, then when people started to make good original properties and new characters with wide appeal and a lot of diversity suddenly it was still somehow "forced" even if there is no thing it is being forced upon. What’s also important to take into consideration with a lot of these anti-Woke Grifters is that a majority of the time, They’ll claim victory over something they had little part or any part in. Currently I’ve seen some say that Ubisoft is going under because of “wokeness” from their Star Wars game and not decades of poor financial decisions, terrible launches of their games, and even just controversial practices in their games like delisting and shutting support for The Crew. Hell, they claim Concord failed because it was “Woke characters” despite the fact that people who they could claim were “woke” also found the characters to not be rather unappealing. The reason for this is they want to make it seem like they have more impact than they realistically have. Saying “Wokeness bankrupted this company and we did it.” comes off a lot better and more like they did something of note compared to the reality of “We review bombed an already not well received game that isn’t doing well.”

It's clear the art itself was intended to be a genuine queer, diverse fantasy story, but because Crunchyroll as a studio only wanted tokenism, they gave the team the absolute bare minimum to achieve it. I'm fully in the camp of including a diverse range of characters in any of my media. Race/gender swapping on the surface doesn't really bother me. It's when a project is marketing itself on that fact to try and get the good will from the left and progressives. Most projects that get lambasted for forced diversity are never in good faith. Even worse, when a project is all-round bad, and has diversity, those anti-woke types blame that for it's failure rather than the actual weaknesses. However, there was one instance where I sort of felt where those naysayers were coming from, and I had to look deeper into why it was really bothering me in this one instance. In the third, and fourth seasons of Young Justice, the writers were clearly trying to tell socially conscious stories. However, the whole thing lacked any sort of subtlety. When the messaging is so at the forefront of every single ark, that takes the place of any sort of meaningful character or story development. The Martian race war is a clear example. It's like an expanded out version of Star Trek's "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield", except it's hitting the nail on the head more. They don't deal with any actual difficult or real solutions to these topics like reparations, it's just sheer pandering.

Discussing race in "Ancient Egypt" is always a sticky issue because Egypt has been continuously civilized, populated, region for over 5,000 years & Cleopatra's era is literally closer to the modern day than it is to the Middle Kingdom period when Pyramids at Giza were built throughout that time the peoples who populated Egypt was in constant shift as Egypt both conquering & integrating surrounding kingdoms & peoples (Seriously the entire history of Ancient Egypt begins with Upper Egypt conquering Lower Egypt ), and being conquered & integrated by Outside invaders like the Hyksos, Alexander the Great, & the Romans. So the "Race" of the Egyptians depends on the era you're referring to and the more time passed the more mixed the population became or time so less clear the answer becomes frequently with the ruling class consisting mostly of the latest conquering group. If you want the most basic Cliff notes version: The Egyptians during the Old & Middle kingdom periods would be primarily what would now considered Black or sub-Saharan African until they were conquered by the Hyksos for 800 years who were a Semitic/Persian people which drastically changed the Racial make up of Egypt going into the New Kingdom period onward so there was pretty much an increasing trend of more Semitic/Persian/Arabic peoples within Egypt with occasional European invaders adding to the mix now & again.(Again that's the most basic Cliff notes version there's no way distill all the nuances of 5,000 years of history I mean Egypt was ruled by Nubians at one point its a massively complex history literally among the longest histories currently known)

Like, some people still get upset when you acknowledge that media like she hulk are poorly writen because they think you're being a reactionary, no matter how reasonable your problems with the show are

My brief time in orbit of these big crybabies and the crowdfunding comic guys. I think 2019 was such a crossroad year for me. I went to San Diego Comic Con and a friend of mine had me go to the panel that had a bunch of 90's era comic guys at it. I remember Brian Pullido was there and someone mentioned EVS being salty that he wasn't. So there's a bunch of 90's era guys milking crowdfunding for money but they also got Jimmy Palmiotti up there because he'd essentially been one of them but obviously had gone way beyond what they limited themselves to be. He even said "I'm not sure I'm in the right panel," and I could relate. We briefly met up with Doug TenNapel after that and he had also made like $850K off of his Earthworm Jim crowdfund book. When I first met him in 2005 he HATED being associated with Earthworm Jim because the rights had been taken from him. By this point however he had them back. I haven't seen him again since then, I'd known him for years but I walked away and it didn't seem to matter. I also met up with Reagan Lodge because it hadn't yet come out that he was in deep in far-right forums at the time. He apparently had been edging out of that and into Orthodox Christianity at that moment because he brought up his concern about his former Marine buddies but couldn't articulate it into problems with the far-right or what the problem was. That's ultimately why I had to separate from him on Twitter like if he had come out against that position I might have stood firm and let my publisher block my Twitter but he didn't. He couldn't address those problems and he can't ultimately see what is wrong and I couldn't be around my old forum friends anymore. Probably saw Ethan Niccole briefly as well before he moved from Babylon Bee to Daily Wire. Last I talked to him he was "JOKING" that BLM protestors should be run over and then chided me for my increasing 'liberalness'. Anyway Doug moved on to NFT grifts (of course) then political commentary grift before getting kicked off of KZbin twice. His reasoning was that comics weren't making money anymore. Sigh.

What's sort of funny about this is, I was kinda expecting to disagree with your views despite aligning similarly on the left, because the idea of forced diversity in my mind was very different from how you see it But while there are some things I still disagree with, I agree with most of your points and at the least see your perspective and like your explanations on it I think it feels racist for people to lean on established white characters and then race swap them, I see it no different than stealing a black creation and turning it white, but I use miles morales as an example of diversity done right, I feel like that character respects the existing version of spiderman that is peter parker and adapts the hero of spiderman into a new and great version that is black I found it interesting to point out the common right wing complaints of media are inconsistent with the subject matter they are complaining about it and lines up more directly with the quality of the work, I think there's some nuance to it like I see some 'diversity' as instead corporate entities or Hollywood etc as exploiting minorities cultures in order to profit off those people by using it in bad faith, but when it's done well and if those people accept it as part of their culture then it's not just alright but a good thing

in my mind, forced diversity is not “this character is not a cis white man” but instead is “this company is creating characters who are not white, cis, and male, but is writing them as though they are not for the sake of writing a good, interesting stories and characters, but instead for the sake of selling a product and generating positive media attention” then again, my experience only comes as a aromantic asexual and gender non-conforming individual. i cannot speak for the experiences of poc individuals, so i am very open to criticism on this matter. i’m just tired of Character who is functionally a straight guy with a “minority identity” slapped on without much care

Not to justify how Miles was treated, but it didn't help he didn't have much to make him stand out on his comic book debut prior to the Spider-Verse movie. Instead of a sociable and artistic teen, he's, like Peter, an intelligent shy kid raised by a poor family. You read the first issue of Spider-Man 2099, featuring Miguel O'Hara, who's has a mexican and irish descent, and there is *so* much that's different from Peter Parker. It's a complete subversion. You'd think the character more similar to Peter would be more well-liked (in the comics, Miguel's antagonism in the ATSV has made him more unpopular) but, nah...
@Mr.Maguro2 сағат бұрын
I wonder how folks would react to the cyberpunk elements of 2099 if Spider-Verse even bothered to tackle them... like, Miguel's nemesis is straight up Elon Musk, right down to wanting to take humanity to mars.

In regards to the trans section of the video, a lot of anthropological research shows us that transgender identities and more complex, layered views of genders predate most of today's civilisations and existed in many indigenous cultures. So we basically had a tremendous regression in our view of gender, and now these people like to gaslight us into thinking this is all brand new.

The change is not really more diversity though. I feel that especially Black male characters are different now from what they used to be like. I remember in the eighties black male characters were usually masculine, cool and charismatic, while black characters later feel more like whiners(just like the white male characters really). Back then, it felt like black characters were often included to make media better. Take for example the late seventies war movies Force 10 From Navarone If they had not added Carl Weathers, that movie had felt a lot more old fashioned and stale. Also, the Morgan Freeman characters feel kind of out of place in Price of Thieves, but it does not matter because both Freeman and the characters are awesome so it did not bother anyone. So I basically feel that I dislike something about new big budget movies, but it is not diversity. It is something else I have difficult to identify to be honest. I do however, see that I have a lot of stuff with female dominated cast(but not The Acolyte for some reason), but absolutely NOT Lioness, Gen V and Furiosa, and got quite a bit upset the chuds dunked on the last one. Seems female characters work better when it is not Disney?

1:17:00 Gonna disagree again (just assume I agree with everything else in the video 😂) Yasuke as a playable main character in AC Shadows doesn't make alot of sense and it kind of comes at the cost of having Japanese lead in a game about Japan. Asian actors are able to get so few roles as it is and Asian people in general are rarely depicted heroically in Western media. Having him as one of Nobunaga's retainers? Have him be a supporting character and quest giver? Yes! That would make sense! But not having both leads of the game be Japanese? ESPECIALLY with all the cultural insensitivity and inaccuracy UbiSoft has demonstrated in the development of this game? Not a good look.

Overwatch is a game where most of the female characters are conventionally attractive that has big R34 fanbase, it also got massive backlash for lack of black characters, it is not a good example of woke game. Also go woke go broke is not some scientific fact, it's a saying, so there is no reason to assume the inverse would be true, that's just ridiculous.
@nattythepanda46922 сағат бұрын
"Go woke go broke" is an argument that chuds constantly spout anytime something they consider "woke" fails, that's why the inverse is said, because we have several more examples and evidence that "go woke go broke" is the opposite of what actually happens.

@@agramugliayou did, you said it “grossed more” and that more people went to see it. That ignores the per capita of who went to see it. “Gross” is how much money you make in profit. And when you remember the 2016 film, Sony put it in more theaters, it was in 4,315 theaters whilst Afterlife was in 3,963, so despite being in hundreds less theaters, more folks kept going back to see Afterlife than Ghostbusters 2016.

[sigh] I’m gonna get called a bigot even though I’m not. I’ve made the same comment in the Spider-Man video but in case you haven’t watched the video… One of my biggest pet peeves is when adaptations swap a part of someone else’s character’s identity without the creators’ consent. Whether it’s race or gender or sexuality or anything else. I always hated it and I still hate it. I don’t care which side of the fandom or just argument you’re on. You have to agree that it’s lazy and insulting. I just want to make this clear: I hate straightwashing as much as gaywashing or racewashing or genderwashing when the character’s creator isn’t in check. And I’m already lenient when said character’s identity is touched when their creators are still alive and I’m forced to believe that in the best case scenario, they accept it. Like Star-Lord being portrayed in a comic arc as a polyamorous bisexual or the MCU portraying Phastos as a gay man with a husband when he had a wife in the comics. There are some exceptions I would accept on "changing" a character's race, gender or sexuality. 1. The characters' creators give the writers permission. 2. Create alternate versions of the characters. Like doppelgangers from other dimensions. Or clones raised in different societies. 3. Create your own version of the character with a different name. 4. The characters' race or sexual orientation was never made clear even by the creators 5. Only public domain characters are fine to change up. I grew up enjoying Brandy's Cinderella because it felt less like leftover casting for bad adaptations or clickbait or gaslighting critics as racist and more like colorblind casting. With public domain IPs, anyone can do anything with that IP. But when it comes to franchises companies DO own, some of them are taken advantage of without the creators' consent.

30:24 I do think Carano getting fired was unfair and a stupid move by Disney. She was being harassed by Twitter crazies for months for not having pronouns in her bio, after politely declining to do so, and then got really sarcastic by putting beep/bop/boop in her bio because of the "bots" blowing up her notifications calling her a fat bitch among other things. I think that kind of militant and frankly misogynistic behavior from people who consider themselves "progressive" needs to be called out.

I should say that one of the main problems with force diversity is that it damages the story. There is a difference between Disney’s The Princess and the Frog(TPATF) and The Acolyte. The diversity in TPATF in is a part of the story and they are just charters. While in The Acolyte, the diversity is the advertisement and the story it’s in is mediocre at best. Obviously it’s more complex than anyone could explain in a paragraph, but that is the main difference.
