It has been a sturdy servant of the British Army for more than 70 years.
The Land Rover has been a vital part of the force since it first came into service in 1949.
Simple, dependable and a workhorse of the British military, it's a vehicle that still has a key role to play after all these years.

Cyril M ex-RMP told me a story of a friend from another regiment who was transporting stores across the camp in a Land Rover. He was young and hasty, and the stores were bouncing around in the rear. About the middle of the camp a large tin of paint bounced out and burst on the road. The two men looked at each other, they were in trouble. Quickly they debussed and grabbing a broom, spread the paint into a square, and then drove on. To their relief nothing was queried. Twenty years later, he returned to the camp for a reunion, to discover the square had been freshly painted.

I think it's similar to saying "hoover" for vacuum cleaner, it is incorrect as Jeep is of course a specific brand but perhaps due to them dominating the early 4x4 market, it turned into a word for offroad vehicles. I served in the artillery and we always called them "rovers"🤷🏽‍♂️

The Landrover is NOT a jeep. The latter is a specific vehicle of US manufacture which has become like Hoover for vacuum cleaners, a generic name for off road vehicles. However bearing in mind the universality and continuation of this amazing and reliable British made utility vehicle, it deserves to be called and KKnown as LANDROVER.

Love the Landy's, as an Amercian soldier back int he 80's and 90's I had the opportunity to drive Jeeps, Landy's and the HMMWV (Humvee).They each have their place, but I'd give the biggest advantage to the Land Rover. The best part of the Jeep was it's weight, you could throw it in low range, first gear and let out the clutch and it would find it's own way over or around obstacles/terrain. Oh, and that lieutenant's mustache needs to be recognized properly! 🤣

Love all the Land Rover negativity on here. Yes Defender's rust on the chassis, but so do Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan etc, even the newer G wagons are suffering from chassis rust, the older ones suffer body rust , the difference is that most Defenders with a rusty chassis are 20, 30 or 40 years old, the other difference is that a new chassis is available from a number of companies as are 99% of the parts to rebuild the vehicle, the other positive is that in the UK, parts are reasonably priced and readily available, they're also very easy to work on with basic tools and easy to upgrade. Service them properly and they'll last a long time.

JLR made a huge mistake stopping production of these genius vehicles. They should have set up a small production hall to keep assembling these just for military or export use. Or contracted a firm to do it. Such a wasted opportunity. INEOS cloned this vehicle to build their Grenadier and charge mega bucks for it. Maybe JLR should have also just kept the body and running gear and put fancy and expensive kit on it.
@Jabber-ig3iw
@Jabber-ig3iw 11 ай бұрын
The mistake they made was building it for too long. They lost their biggest buyer, farmers, a good 10 years before they upgraded the Defender. Once double cab pickups became readily available farmers dropped the Defender and its old fashioned ways for a dependable workhorse with heated seats, aircon that worked, comfort, and everything that comes with a modern vehicle. LR should have dropped the Defender in the early 2000s and come up with something new for farmers. Because they completely missed the boat they had to chase the soccer moms with the new defender, and are doing very well with it sales wise, which is all that matters really.

I have owned my Land Rover 90 200 Tdi since new in 1991. Yes I know it is a "Defender" but I hate that silly name. My first two vehicles in the mid 1970s were Series ones (86 inch and 80 inch). The 200 Tdi has no electronics whatsoever. It does require maintenance and involvement but everything is fixable with a basic tools. There is no radio, couldn't hear it over the racket anyway, no air con, it leaks a bit in heavy rain and the heater does its best to overcome the draughts and lack of insulation. Despite its feeble by today's standard 110 horse power it will pull two or three tons with ease and no drama. Solid, noisy, not built for comfort, annoying at times but I love it and there is nothing else like it.

The Pinzguaer 4x4 and 6x6 were built by British Aerospace, they bought the rights, they're very good off road but don't think they're as simple to fix. They don't need them, due to IED's the defender can't be used in the front line, it's also too expensive for white fleet where a cheaper standard 4x4 Ranger or similar can be used. Even armoured Defenders didn't offer the protection, they now used Mastif, Jackal etc, all far more complex, expensive and better armoured.

Volume is key in a full fledged war. If there ever would be one where UK would take part that fleet would be depleted in a couple of months with 0 options of replacing it. I'm talking from a perspective of more than two hundred vehicles sent to Ukraine by myself.

Neat video. I like the part when they drive in the mud! In all seriousness, the fact these vehicles don’t have electronics and can be easily repaired is what a 4X4 is all about. What type of motors do these have and are they standard or automatic? EDIT: The lieutenant’s mustache is an accomplishment by itself! Well done sir!

I thought the mod stopped buying them after the 300tdi due to the td5s stupid computers that required computers in the field for repair. I thought they had started using those ugly Renault "van" looking things to replace the Defenders and be more compatible with the other EU militaries. JLR dropped the ball massively when they stopped production due to new EU safety and emmisions rules. Ineos proved a defender could've continued production instead of another Chelsea tractor in the same market as all the other JLR Chelsea tractors. Used to be a clear divide between what each model was intended for. Now they're all the same market.

No, the RB44 (Renault/Dodge cab) replaced the 101 Forward control Land Rover. Defenders are no longer fit for front line service due to the threat from IED's and lack of protection. It's cheaper to buy Ford Rangers for white fleet use. Much as I dislike the new Defender JLR do seem to have sold a great deal of them and I suppose they're in the business of selling cars. Ineos haven't proved anything the Grenadier can't carry the same weight as the old Defender, it also weighs over 2 tonnes and isn't much use for businesses as it doesn't qualify for VAT relief. Over complicated (auto box, touch screen, electronics ) and more expensive than the planned brief, I can see it doing badly compared to the new Defender, shame it's hardly British either, despite the union Jack's being waved in the early days.

Absolutely loved these pieces of kit. The new Defender is impressive but moves so far away from the original concept. Such a shame.

You lose all credibility calling a Land Rover a jeep, shows you have not done your research or know the history. They are Land Rovers, plain and simple.
