It's funny, you don't need a diamond pickaxe to break a beacon, you can break it with your fists. Since it is crafted with a nether star, mojan didn't want players to lose a had to obtain it. Edit: at least in newer versions

You do not need a diamond pixaxe or any pixaxe to Breck the beacon, you can brake the beacon with your hands and you still get the beacon and you can brake the beacon at the same spread as and pickaxe
