Ford 351m/400 engine removal. Thez Nutz Garage Episode #7

I remove the Ford 400 engine out of my 1978 Ford F-350. I also find out something I did not want to know!

Not sure people realize that the sticker on the side of the engine that says 351m / 400 is the motor family. They're two different engines. The 351m is a 5.8 liter it replaced the 351c. The 400 is a 6.6 liter engine. you got to check the bottom of that sticker and see whether it says 5.8 l or 6.6 to know which engine you have. People seem to think that the 351m/400 means the engine is a 400 which is not true.

Where was this truck for most of it's life? I feel like the only way that flywheel could get that rusted is if it were left in a swamp for thirty years. Good lord. I've been enjoying watching your progress. I just got my 77 last month. Thankfully, I don't have anywhere near the rust issues or the needs to do as much work as you. All the same, I'm glad you're doing the work because I'm getting to learn from your experience!

Ford sprayed the underside of these trucks with a pretty thick rust preventative. Mine only has 68,000 miles, so it's still in tact in many places. I don't know if there is a modern, aftermarket spray that one can buy, but that sounds like a pretty good way to protect your investment after you get it where you want it. As I watched this, I couldn't help but notice that you don't appear to have the thermactor system installed on that engine. I have the 302, and I have the remnants of it that I'm trying to clean up (by clean up, I mean get rid of). The previous owners were profoundly lazy about fixing or maintaining certain things. I suppose that's the irritating part about buying a used car, is un-jury-rigging other people's shortcuts.

Don't know if you realize this or not but your pupper licked some of that coolant on the concrete. Gotta watch that, it's extremely poisonous for animals (& obviously humans too). Great video tho.
