Brian, I did the replacement of the timing belt, cam phasers and guides when my 2005 F150 truck had 180,000 + miles on it last summer. I did not have the money at the time to do the oil pump then. I now have 242,000+ on my truck and have purchased the 340HV oil pump and just waiting for the right time to do it which will be soon. I just want to thank you for your videos and the instruction you have provided. I have folks say to me you got to have the guts to do what I've done. I just tell them that I had great guy who is very knowledgable help me and I then refer them to your channel. Thank you for this latest video which explains how something so simple can create such a major issue.

Damn, man. You're going to tear down the entire front of the engine TWICE in order to save $100? In the mean time, damage may have been done to that original pump and compromise the project's longevity. Dude, a few beers and a couple pizzas skipped and you could have done it in one pass. As the Deerhunter said, "One shot."

I had this issue on my 04 F150 that had 195,000 miles. Through the help of your videos and a little money spent on the roller tool and parts, I was able to complete the whole trimming replacement with the pump for around $1000. Thanks for the videos they are a great!

Guy Houser I worked on it in the evenings after work and it took me all week. I'm guessing around 12 hours total. I really took my time and made sure I did everything right. Truck is still smooth and silent. A friend that has access to a machine evacuated the ac system for me. I borrowed a set of gauges and filled it myself when everything was back together. I will say to make sure and check your lifters and followers well. I had a follower that was locked up and worn flat on one side. The cam was slightly scored but not too bad so I only replaced the follower.

Guy Houser you're welcome. Depending on the year you may not have to take the AC line loose. I have an 04 and it's right in the way. Btw, make sure you replace the oil pump. It's cheap and easy to replace while everything is apart. A coworker fixed his truck and didn't replace the pump and it went bad and ruined the motor a few thousand miles after putting it back together. Fordtechmakuloco has a video on a new melling oil pump that is high volume and pressure. I believe it was just introduced this year. Unfortunately it wasn't available when I did mine but I did use the best melling available at the time.

I have one. 2008 F250 5.4L. The engine was smooth and quiet up to 190,000 miles with zero issues. It now has the hot idle cam phaser knock, and is kinda down on power at 216,000 miles. I figure I'll replace all the components discussed in this video at 250,000 miles, and have a rock solid engine. As a comparison my 2005 Chevy 2500HD 6.0 needed a water pump at 97,000 miles, and I had to replace the transfer case at 168,000 miles, so I traded it for the ford. No regrets.

Brian, thanks so much. Wow! Your $2,300 price is an incredible bargain! My son and I followed your other videos to change everything out on his pick up. But it was around $2,500+ just on Ford parts, tools and fluids. However we also replaced all the fuel injectors (1 was bad), all the lifters (2 were bad), water pump, fan belt, hoses and idler pulley bearings too while we were in there. Truck only had 144,000 but previous owner apparently rarely changed the oil -- lots of sludge.

I helped a friend do his chains and guides recently. The previous owner had already done it all, but reversed the tensioners. So the "L" tensioner was on the Right side. Well, that didn't go so well, and ultimately took out the guides. Luckily, putting new tensioners in correctly, and after clearing the oil pan of plastic and debris, the truck now runs good. So another thing to watch for is correct placement of the tensioners. BTW, I actually discovered they were on wrong by watching one of your videos, Brian. Thanks a lot for all of the GREAT videos you put out.

The Ford oil pressure gauge is not actually a gauge, it goes to the middle and stays there as soon as it has 7 psi or more. The GM's have real pressure gauges that move with engine RPM. That said I own a Navigator with a 5.4 3V and doing the timing job soon.

Just sold my 2007 f150 5.4l 3v. I had 192,000 miles of towing trailers and boats, drove through nasty fields and woods for work with it. Always had to use 4x4. Never had a single major issue with it. Changed spark plugs a couple times and had to change coil pack springs and boots. Never the actual coil pack they were all original... if you change the oil on these 5.4s every 4,000 miles and take care of it they’re not an issue like people like to say...

$2300 dollars for this job is very reasonable. I just bought the timing kit from Amazon all Motorcraft parts, VCT's, Melling 10340 oil pump, and a whole set of roller followers and lifters and it cost me $1660.00. Granted your not including roller/followers in the price those alone cost $481.00. I wish I lived closer (Massachusetts) because I would gladly pay you to do this job for me.

I got the startup rattle at 40000 miles and parked the truck until I found Brian's first videos on this subject. Watching the videos I saw the blown tensioners and thus had something to look for.....sure enough, both of mine blown. I replaced both only and inspected the guides and nothing else was damaged so I buttoned up the cover. 10w30 oil since and all is well at 100000 miles. Keeping fingers crossed.

Just wanted to stop by and thank you Brain. On one of your videos I seen where you recommended the Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic 5W-30 Motor Oil. I tried the Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic High Mileage 5W-30 Motor Oil it has something in it to condition seals and said it could help a motor that was using oil. I have been using about 1/2 quart in about 700 miles. Since I tried this oil you recommended I've gone about 600 miles and it hasn't used a drop. This is now my new oil. Thank you very much , this issue was worrying me more than I would care to admit. I'm slowly but surely making this truck more dependable thanks to your expertise and hard work on 5.4 3v. I've been close to giving up on it but your videos are saving it. I already had tried the ATS Chemical engine treatment...twice, Megapower engine additive that I've personally see do miracles for motors but none of those got my engine to stop burning oil but the pennzoil did the trick.

Hey Brian, I just wanted to let you know that you are the man. I’ve been working on a Ford F550 6.8L, it’s one of our work trucks that went down a few months ago when it came in I took the valve covers are off and noticed that the passenger side head can shaft caps were all broken so I replaced the head with a reman head that came complete with a new cam. Replaced the oil pump. All of the timing components, the water pump, all new gaskets tubes, head gasket, new bolts, new exhaust manifold, bolts, all OEM. fast forward after running the truck for two weeks with no issues the first time we took it out on the road. Oil light came on in the gauge for the pressure dropped all the way down and started making noise again on the passenger side head. When I took the valve cover off to see what the problem was, I saw that all of the camshaft caps were all loose again and the one in the back was broken, why do you think this happened? Could it be that the engine wasn’t thoroughly cleaned out from all the metal shavings from the first time the caps went out or do you think this happened because the timing was set wrong.? Wouldn’t I get codes if the timing was set wrong though? or do you think that all this happened because I used an oem oil pump and not the HVLP oil pump? I tried calling the company that I got the reman head from today and they said it was an installation error not a head issue because the caps shouldn’t come loose and will not warranty the head but they said that they are going to send me another cap for the one that broke which was the last one all the way in the back and they said if the cam isn’t scored up too bad and the bed that the cam sits on it’s either it should work. Please if you can try to help me I’d really appreciate it, I’m down on my luck and really need help to get this thing back on the road. I’ve spent so much money on this thing and I feel like I’ve gotten nowhere with it but just back to where I originally started. Thanks again, GOD bless

Brian, keep up the good work. it is interesting by some of the comments that people are quick to blame the engineers that designed the modular line of engines instead of being attentive and when they hear an odd noise just leave it be to snowball to something as extreme as this example. Proper Maintenance, servicing when there is a abnormal sound or issue all falls on the owner of the vehicle. This is not to say that there are no issues with an engine design, and that is why there are redesigned / improved service parts like the new guides, tensioner, oil pumps etc. this major repair could have been a far less expensive job if it had been looked at by a knowledgeable tech like yourself when the initial noise started.
@samhouston1673
@samhouston1673 Жыл бұрын
Proper maintenance should not require tearing down the engine to accomplish. It is, without a doubt, just poor engineering? Why? Cause there are other engines that FORD has that does not have these issues, pure and simple.

All motorcycle ive worked on handa suzuki kaw and yamaha Triumph steel cams run on aluminum pedistals and ive seen some Triumphs pushing 100k so yea its how they are maintained Lack of reagular service is what gets the timing chains too!! So if you are getting plenty clean oil to the camshaft steel on aluminum is fine its the lack of oil that does the damage most bike carry as much oil pressure as out 5.4!!

Ford's going downhill fast. Used to be all Ford trucks around here on the farms. Now Dodge is taking over. Farmers say new Fords don't hold up when you work them. And they "hate" the ecoboost engines and aluminum beds. Ashame. The old 300 6cyl., 302 and 351 engines were workhorses.

Ford truck engines are NOT OHV, that's why farmers have more problems with Ford than Chevrolet and Ram V8, and Ford trucks don't serve the farmers well anymore. The last and final Ford truck engine built for farmers was the 4.2L V6 OHV, but it was found in regular-cab only with limited sales number and production limit. It was discontinued after 2008 model year because Ford don't want to see many 1 million mile trucks running on the road.

I realize this would be very difficult but could you somehow record/show us the actual sounds you're describing? We have a 2010 Expedition that we bought at 83k mi that always has had the "diesel" sound (145k mi now). Not sure if it sounds any different at startup. We'll need a new transmission soon (occasional slipping while towing and hot) so I gotta figure out if I want to spend $3500 on that plus thousands on a timing job. Oh and the ABS ECU is out and that's another $1100. Oh and the lower blend door needs replacing that requires tearing out the dash which costs ~$1000 if I don't attempt it myself.... Geeze maybe I answered my own question!

In my experience, unless you have used 5-30 synthetic oil , ( like Pennzoil Pure ) for the majority of those miles, you probably need this service. Upgrading to the parts described, regular service, you will get a lot of use from the vehicle. Some fleet vehicles here in Arizona are upwards of 500k miles. All have the 5.4 Triton

Greetings, your videos are great!!! keep up the good work My daughters 02 Mountaineer (4.6l 2v) had the spark plug ejection issue... I had to weld up my own tools to make the (head installed) repair... (taught me valuable lessons, so this has not repeated on our 02 Explorer 46.l 2v). So when I bought my 2009 F150, 4.6l I ensured I got the 3v engine, now very close to 100K miles. I do not notice any "startup rattle" I do have the hot idle ticking (potentially the camphaser lockout pin). I also notice what I believed was a heat shield rattle, that only is noticed @ light acceleration at just over 1000 RPM.. Your videos and explanation make me believe this could be a timing chain. Based on the info in your videos I believe I am destined to pull the front cover in the future and do all the timing work and If I understand correctly put in a melling oil pump...If I determine I have tensioner "blowout" is there any remedy that is more likely to prevent this. Other info.. I change (synthetic only) the oil each 5K previosly 5W20, until today 5W30, I have never seen any plastic parts drain in the , no metal on the magnet (I know fine aluminum would not be caught by a magnet) . I plan on cutting open my last WIX oil filter to give the insides a look. any additional advice / insights?

I have what sounds like a definite knocking sound at 1500 and between 2000 and 2400 rpm in my 2004 5.4 - 2 valve. It's a 2004 E350 SD. Started doing it in the Jasper rebuild I had in it at 85k miles so I replaced it with a unit from Powertrain Direct (now apparently out of business) but the rebuild came from AER in Carrolton TX and it did the same noise. Replaced it under warranty 3 months later and now this one does it! We have tried to isolate this noise by disconnecting the serpentine belt to make sure it wasn't an accessory and we have checked the flex plate and this noise persists. I hear it the loudest at the PCV connector at the back of the engine where it connects to the intake. It's very loud and sounds like a connecting rod's about to let loose. Oil pressure and temp fine. I am at a loss. I know this cant be good and I know its not normal. Please steer me in some direction. I have to find and fix this ASAP as this van makes me my living daily! I'm 77 and have had more Fords than all the other cars put together. In 92 I bought a Toyota pickup. It got the same maintenance as my Fords. The difference is Nothing ever went wrong with the Toyota while the Fords (Tempo, Taurus & Topas) were broke all the time. In 2003 I bought a new Dodge pickup because I was so disgusted with Ford that I wouldn't ever look at them. I would have bought a Toyota but at the time they were too light to pull our trailer. I kept the Toyota to drive back and forth to work and just sold it last year with 305,000 on it. It still ran great and all I ever had to do to it, 1 clutch and bearings in the rear end ( My fault, I put the wrong oil in it) My Dodge Ram has 125,000 miles on it now and has been trouble free. As for long term reliability I put ford one notch above the Yugo and on par with the Fiat. In other words they are crap.
